Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

This chaos was totally avoidable.

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

“They all knew.”

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

I have other things to bitch about but those will have to wait.

America is going up in flames. The NYTimes fawns over MAGA celebrities. No longer a real newspaper.

Giving in to doom is how we fail to fight for ourselves & one another.

You cannot shame the shameless.

Sadly, media malpractice has become standard practice.

You would normally have to try pretty hard to self-incriminate this badly.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

There is no right way to do the wrong thing.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

The republican ‘Pastor’ of the House is an odious authoritarian little creep.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

The “burn-it-down” people are good with that until they become part of the kindling.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

ABC’s the Note:

“Is President Obama Nixon-fying the White House?” Republicans ask

Republican Sen. Judd Gregg of New Hampshire, who came pretty darn close to becoming a member of the Obama Administration, coined a new word on the Senate floor to criticize the President and his staff.

The man President Obama once nominated to be his Commerce Secretary wondered aloud on the Senate floor if the White House under President Obama is starting to be run like it was under Richard Nixon. “Nixon-fying” is how Gregg put it.

It is a point that is for debate, to be sure.

Do the men who write for ABC’s the Note have sex with barnyard animals, as some suggest? It is a point that is for debate, to be sure! Also, it would be irresponsible to not speculate.

I will give them high praise for excellent use of a Cavuto Mark in the title. But then again, the folks at ABC think Fox’s Neil Cavuto is their brother in arms (you really have to read that), so that is to be expected, I guess.

Fred Hiatt’s Nuts

by John Cole|  October 21, 200911:17 am| 132 Comments

This post is in: Media, Assholes

Today’s guest voice is Bill Donohue of the Catholic League:

There are many ways cultural nihilists are busy trying to sabotage America these days: multiculturalism is used as a club to beat down Western civilization in the classroom; sexual libertines seek to upend the cultural order by attacking religion; artists use their artistic freedoms to mock Christianity; Hollywood relentlessly insults people of faith; activist left-wing legal groups try to scrub society free of the public expression of religion; elements in the Democratic party demonstrate an animus against Catholicism; and secular-minded malcontents within Catholicism and Protestantism seek to sabotage their religion from the inside.

Donohue works his way through the usual enemies list- radical gays, Jesse Jackson, secularist, Hollywood jews, Democrats, etc.

I’m too lazy to go through Donohue’s list of appalling behavior, as it is too long and ugly to recount it all, but most recently he was heard comparing Obama to David Duke. There really is no one too crazy or vile to get an op-ed printed at the Washington Post.

Makes Sense To Me

Not seeing a problem here:

President Obama is working systematically to marginalize the most powerful forces behind the Republican Party, setting loose top White House officials to undermine conservatives in the media, business and lobbying worlds.

With a series of private meetings and public taunts, the White House has targeted the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the biggest-spending pro-business lobbying group in the country; Rush Limbaugh, the country’s most-listened-to conservative commentator; and now, with a new volley of combative rhetoric in recent days, the insurance industry, Wall Street executives and Fox News. President Obama is working systematically to marginalize the most powerful forces behind the Republican Party, setting loose top White House officials to undermine conservatives in the media, business and lobbying worlds.

Considering Rush Limbaugh and the lunatics at Fox are unstable and dishonest and an actual threat to the country, and the Wall Street execs almost brought down the world economy, the only thing I can say about this strategy is “MORE OF THIS, PLEASE.” Even if it gives Jake Tapper and company the vapors.

Tunch Is Loose

by John Cole|  October 21, 20091:08 am| 227 Comments

This post is in: Cat Blogging

I’ve spent the last four hours trying to find Tunch, who got out somehow, and I just give up. I have driven the neighborhood multiple times, looked everywhere, left food, and I just do not know what to do. I am beyond panic. If he comes home, it is of his own volition and there is nothing I can do.

The fat bastard.

*** Update ***

I sat outside like a deer hunter with multiple food traps. I finally caught him. Next time I am not freaking out and walking the neighborhood- I’m putting down food. Here he is downing the treats:

homesweethome

And yes. I cried. I am such a damned loser.

Give ’em enough thread

Here’s something I sometimes think to myself….I often read that so-and-so is a reasonable person and that his or her ideas should therefore be granted some kind of prima facie credence. Will the whole “reasonable person” trope eventually go away? How is it different from ad hominemism in reverse?

Consider this an open thread.

Hens Chickens guarding the Foxhouse

Steve Benen on the rest of the media’s (minus Jacob Weisberg) bizarre defense of Fox News:

But let’s put all of that aside and focus on a point too many observers don’t appreciate: the line between Fox News’ personality-driven primetime hosts and Fox News’ “reporting” doesn’t exist. This isn’t a network that does legitimate journalism during the day, and then let’s GOP clowns run wild at night — this is a network that acts as the arm of a political party and a cog in a larger partisan machine all day.

[….]

Josh (Marshall) added, “If you actually watch Fox News with any regularity it’s hard to see any point to discussing the fact that the station operates more or less openly as a wing of the GOP.” And yet, now that the White House has shown the audacity to note this plain fact, the pushback from other media figures is pretty intense.

For Ruth Marcus and others, the problem isn’t that Fox News is making a mockery of modern journalism; the problem is that the White House has acknowledged reality. The establishment, I’m afraid, is complaining about the wrong party here.

There are lots of reasons for why mainstream journalists to would side with Fox on this one. There’s the fact that it’s always good to take an irrational right-wing position to prove you’re not teh librul. There’s the need to defend fellow real journalists like Chris Wallace and Brit Hume from the vituperative, foul-mouthed blogging hordes. (EDIT: if you can’t tell this is snark….)

But I have to wonder if there’s something else at work here too: the possibility of having to work for Murdoch some day. It’s an article of faith among a lot of journalists that Murdoch is a super-brilliant businessman whose genius will transcend the economic crisis that is destroying the news business, that he will somehow take declining ad revenues and make declining-ad-revenue-ade. Better to be on his side, just to be safe.

Maybe I’m being too cynical. But I think that’s part of the dynamic here.
