Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

Booze blogging!

by DougJ|  November 21, 20096:30 pm| 210 Comments

This post is in: wine blogging

We’ve never tried blogging about booze, the hard stuff, the sauce, here before. So I’m going to give it a try.

First off, I don’t know much about hard alcohol. But I’ve been watching a lot of “Mad Men” and I’m fairly certain I will look more or less exactly like Roger Sterling when my hair turns white, so I decided to start drinking martinis a few months ago. I was heavily influenced by Fareed Zakaria’s piece on the subject, which recommends gin rather than vodka and wet rather than dry. I also use orange bitters (an excellent local product) in most of the ones I make, and olives in sum as well. I’ve been through three gins so far — Tanqueray, Plymouth, and Seneca Drums, made by Finger Lakes Distillers. I like Tanqueray a lot, respect the austerity of Plymouth (though I don’t like it that well), and am crazy for the Seneca Drums, which is made about 70 miles from where I live. It tastes a lot like Tanqueray only a bit more complex (there’s cardamom and some other spices in there as well as juniper) and smoother. Currently, I use the bitters and the olive in the Tanqueray and the Plymouth but just use a tiny bit of the olive brine (with no olive) in the Seneca Drums.

You guys seem like a martini-savvy crowd. What gins do you like? What vermouth? What proportion of gin-to-vermouth? Am I a philistine for adding both the orange bitters and the olive to my martini?

While I’m at it, what about the distillation process or the aging process makes something taste smooth? The Finger Lakes Distillery stuff all tastes smoother to me than larger distillers, but maybe that’s my imagination (though I don’t think it is). What would that be?

Update. I’m currently sipping Finger Lakes Distillers new rye, which is dangerously smooth. For Christmas, I usually give my uncles high-end bourbon, but the only I really like is the A. H. Hirsch, which is getting harder and harder to find. I can’t find any other bourbons that seem to get the same kind of crazy rave reviews that the Hirsch does, but some ryes do — specifically the Black Maple Hill and some of the special bottlings of Sazerac. Would a bourbon drinker like a rye? Are those kind of sweet or not? For whatever reason, this passage from All the King’s Men, the only really good book about politics I’ve ever read, really made me crave rye.

Woofstock

Tammy and I took Samantha and Lily to “woofstock,” a dog show sort of thing run by a local animal group. Was kind of fun, with lots of pets and their people, some booths selling pet goods, and some silly stuff like a “Boston Marathon” where they raced Boston Terriers. Both dogs behaved very well, and here are some pics:

dogismycopilot

Yes, I know she is not supposed to ride like that, but sometimes I let her anyway.

The girls behaving. They both were really good, especially considering how many dogs were there. This pic is for Tbogg:

That was Daisy, the most adorable little Basset Hound puppy. And finally, this is for Oliver Willis:

dachsund

You haven’t lived until you have watched a Dachsund run agility drills.

I’m heading to tTammy and Brian’s to make dinner, so you all behave.

The Deep Insights of Chuck Todd

by John Cole|  November 21, 20093:05 pm| 115 Comments

This post is in: Media, Assholes

I’m far more pessimistic about the future of this country after a few days of reading twitter feeds from our news elite. Here is Chuck Todd, after Reid gets the necessary votes to advance the HCR bill:

smokingcrackrock

Shorter Chuck Todd: It’s only big news if the Democrats fail!

I guess he didn’t pick up on the fact that if they had failed to get the 60 votes, HCR would, for all intents and purposes, be dead in the short run, as the Republicans would filibuster. That is why this is such a big deal- they have overcome the obstructionism of the GOP, and the debate can advance.

Although in fairness to Chuck, he may be more concerned with why Obama didn’t reach out more to President McCain. Not to be too subjective, or anything.

*** Update ***

Can anyone imagine the feeding frenzy for the next two weeks if they had failed to get 60 and advance the debate? Can you imagine the Sunday shows tomorrow? Can you imagine all the headlines speculating if Obama was a lame duck? “Senate fails to advance health care reform. Is Obama’s entire agenda at risk?” and “Obama’s signature legislation killed in Senate. Can he recover?” and “Republicans, spurred by sagging Obama poll numbers and grass roots support from tea party, stop Obama administration in their tracks.”

And Chuck Todd would be leading the goddamned charge with that crap.

Ungovernable

by John Cole|  November 21, 200910:42 am| 121 Comments

This post is in: Media, Bring on the Brawndo!

It is starting to become clear to me what the GOP strategy is- they are trying to turn the entire country into California- an ungovernable mess where the majority is incapable of governing because of an obstinate and insane minority party and ridiculous procedural hoops.

And when you realize that, it makes complete sense why no one in the Republican party stands up to the lies spewed by Sarah Palin, like, for example, this nonsense about mammograms and death panels. She is flat out lying, as she does most every time she opens her mouth, but no one in the GOP will call her on it because it is to their advantage to make the country ungovernable. They like it when there is so much bullshit and disinformation out there that the public is incapable of being informed. Sarah Palin is cheaper and far more effective than all the bullshit factories the Koch Foundation and others have been funding for decades.

And our media elites, desperate for access and a way to fill a 24 hour news cycle, comfortable with their village status, and cowed by decades of being called liberal, rather than calling obvious lies for what they are, will instead sit by and act like play by play announcers and color commentators at a football game, with a he-said she-said approach: “Sarah Palin claims mammogram guidelines are legally binding, Kathleen Sebelius says this is not true. What do you think? Our roundtable next with Stephen Hayes, Karl Rove, and James Carville, where we will discuss what this means for Obama and the 2010 midterm elections.”

Just depressing. On any given day, if you just quickly read a newspaper or watch cable news for fifteen minutes, there is a very solid chance you will leave the experience knowing less than when you started.

A Question About Senate Procedures

by John Cole|  November 21, 200910:19 am| 31 Comments

This post is in: Politics

Why do we allow the people who choose to vote against even debating a bill participate in the debate and offer amendments later on in the process? Didn’t they already decide they didn’t want to debate the bill? Can’t we take them at their word and ignore them?

DaveNoon Is Reading Going Rogue So You Don’t Have To

I’m a glutton for punishment, but I have no intention of ever reading this book and will leave it to others:

In brief, chapter 3 is a cumbersome, hundred-page turd that covers Palin’s campaign for the governor’s office; her first 18 months as chief executive, including her push for ethics reform and a natural gas pipeline; all the people who were mean to her for one reason or another; her last pregnancy, including the letter Palin wrote to her family in which she pretended to be God; and her family’s random exploits from 2006-2008, including Todd’s 4th place finish in the Iron Dog snowmachine race and Bristol’s 1st place finish in getting knocked up.

At this point, would it not be easier to track the honest statements in the book?
