Live in the Massachussetts 8th? Mike Capuano wants to hear from you.
Seriously. All of you who live in or near Mike Capuano’s district need to get on the phone first thing tomorrow and tell him how you can’t wait to fund a primary challenger if he kills this thing.

So – we’re sure the cut-off date for a primary hasn’t passed?
Betsy
Wait WTF – What’d he do?!!?
Can you give me a link to post to my FB page? I’m in his district and so are tons of my friends.
Nied
Honestly I don’t care if I have to wait until 2012 to get rid of him I will. Lord knows I’ll work my ass off against him if he tries running for Teddy K’s seat again. Where’s the link to that nifty primer for first timers?
robertdsc
Fucking jackass.
robertdsc
Here’s the dirt from TPM:
Capuano suggests a no vote
Betsy
@robertdsc:
Thanks. He will be hearing from me.
Warren Terra
I’m in his district, and will call (and have called before – but I slacked off because I like Capuano and generally trusted him to do the right thing as a good sensible liberal here – I had no idea he’d go all Firebagger on it).
GregB
While you have Congressman Capuano on the phone ask him to look into the allegations regarding Senator Pink Leather Hotpants harassing a female staffer.
Good night and good luck.
J.W. Hamner
Whoever answers the phone will get a (respectful) earful tomorrow afternoon. I’ve never given him money, but I voted for him in the Senate primary (as well as the last couple House elections)… and I would certainly never vote for him again and donate to every Dem challenger if he doesn’t back off soon.
bodacious
Called my Dem. Rep. from WA Mr. Rest-In-Peace Brian Baird. CRAP, this guy was a clinical psychologist? Blah-blah-blah ‘Rep Baird has not made a decision yet’. So sad, so very very sad.
deadrody
Hey, thanks for the link! Now I can call Mike and tell him he should stand strong and oppose Obamacare – unless he is looking to be the next Martha Coakley in Massachusetts.
Betsy
@deadrody:
Sweetie, the 8th ain’t gonna go red any time in the next 25 years, at a bare minimum. As we like to say, “Better dead than red!” The danger for Capuano is losing in the primary. Whoever wins in the Dem primary will be the next representative.
Betsy
BTW, I have always been greatly amused that it’s now conservatives that are “red.” Is this the only country in which that’s the case? There can’t be many.

@Betsy: Blame media coverage of the 2000 election. And even then it was only a few outlets. Since then, though, it’s been the standard.
Warren Terra
@themann1086:
Yeah, I’ve always wondered about that. On election night in 2000, many outlets colored states red or blue as a winner was declared, probably because they had to color them something and those are the two colors on the flag, not counting white) but different outlets assigned red and blue to the Democrats or the Republicans. Somehow it became a truism that Red was Republican and Blue Democrat, and I’ve never understood how that happened.

Don’t forget the whiteboard.

@themann1086: Indeed. I adore the delicious irony.

@Nied:
Don’t threaten. Cajole; it works better. Tell him you will volunteer for him, but you need his vote on this bill.
Some of his concerns are legitimate but things will actually turn out better than he thinks under the bill. Here are some things you could use.
The big problem is the doctors and hospitals which are plentiful in his area and those docs will be working on him.
He should be told that it will come out all right because they will move away from fee for procedures to a more value based approach and the leading hospitals will do fine. We know what jewels they are (well a little exaggeration never hurt) and how important education is. And if anything goes wrong it can be fixed later. There is no way to put in exceptions now; look at the Nebraska fuss.
Tell him that there is no way a state can get its cost for healthcare down by itself. The changes have to be nationwide. So if this doesn’t pass Mass will have bigger deficits because it is subsidizing insuring a lot of people and that will cost more as insurance premiums continue to skyrocket.
Furthermore, the federal subsidies will take a huge load off the Massachusetts state budget — and if necessary they can give subsidies to the big teaching hospitals.
There is funding in the bill for tuition repayment for primary care doctors and additional funds for nursing education. There will be funding for more Community Health Centers (20-30 for each state). He can claim credit for all of them around the state — especially if he wants to run for the Senate (and have a friendly org point out that Brown went to the Senate to stop the bill from passing).
If we don’t get it passed now there won’t be another crack for decades. Surely he doesn’t want the Republican plan.
Tell him not to worry about reconciliation. Reid will know that Pelosi will have his balls for a car ornament if he even thinks about screwing over the House. Same for Obama.

@Warren Terra:
Let’s start pressuring the media for green and yellow.
Yellow would be much more appropriate for the republicans.

I just called and talked with one of his assistants. She was nice, but sounded beaten down. I calmly and very nicely expressed my strong desire that Congressman Capuano supports the HCR bill in the house. She asked why. I said that while I had read Capuano’s statement, and agreed with many of his points, I also think we need to pass this bill as it is, because we need reform – any kind of reform. Essentially, I asked her to pass the message on not to condemn progress now in the pursuit of perfection.
Again, though, it sounds like his office is getting hammered. I hope that’s a good thing.
Crashman
Just got off the phone with the Rep’s office. I politely expressed my desire to see HCR pass the house, and urged Capuano to vote for it because we’ve come too far to give up now. The guy answering the phone asked me to repeat my name and address. Hopefully it’ll make some difference.

Yeah, also, I am a resident of MA-8th, and I made sure that was very clear. I also stated I’m normally a supporter of Capuano, but am disappointed with his current position.
Crashman
@Redshirt: Lets hope that most people calling today feel the same way we do.
Redshirt
@Crashman: Amen. But, I’ve come to distrust so called “Liberal Massachusetts”, so I’m assuming half the calls he’s getting are from the usual angry wingnut jerks. Maybe more than half.
aymp
As a MA-8 resident, I told the staffer I’ve been a long time supporter of him, and while I understand his concerns for the state of MA, there are a great many benefits as well. Sounds like they’re inundated with calls.
ElBlot
I am a constituent and just called him – thanks for highlighting this to me.
Catfish N. Cod
I live in Capuano’s district… called and gave my $0.02, emphasizing that concerns about details and local effects were not as important as Passing. The. Darn. Bill. I also made the point that any flaws could be dealt with in the *next* health care bill — and that the cost curve will make it absolutely necessary for there to be a second health care bill down the line.
