Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Bark louder, little dog.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

I really should read my own blog.

Battle won, war still ongoing.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

This blog will pay for itself.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

We still have time to mess this up!

Go Steelers!

*** Update ***

That three man pile drive of Vince Young was some cheap bullshit. There should have been multiple flags. There better be some fines coming this week. No need for that kind of crap.

The Jets aren’t as bad as they looked (which is pretty bad), and the Pats aren’t as good as they looked (cuz they played the Bungles and not the Bengals), so that should be a pretty good game later. I gotta go with the Pats, though. Nothing would please me more than hearing another LeBatard rant with a score by Carmina Burana.

I’m looking forward to the completely new and creative way the Lions are going to find to lose this week. I thought they had exhausted all possible variations and would have to start repeating old standards, but that “no catch because you didn’t hand it to the referee in the end zone” innovation last week was genius.

Some loon is actually arguing that Alan Keyes has a shot in 2012. That he’d love to see Keyes take on Obama in a debate, because Al is one of the best debaters he’s ever seen.

I started off with a few references to the Illinois Senate race, and how well that turned out for Keyes. But I’m seriously tempted to just shut my mouth and let this one take root. As a Dem I can’t imagine a better Republican Candidate than Keyes.

    @asiangrrlMN:

Alan fucking Keyes? Are you serious? WTF are you?

On a Houston Texans board. You should see some of the comments here. A recent example:

The Texans have a breakout running back by the name of Arian Foster. Some among the fan club want to call themselves… I shit you not….

    Arian Nation

It’s supposed to be a pun off of Raider Nation and it’s totally not racist because they are rooting for a black guy. Thankfully it seems to have been squashed by people pointing out that an “Arian Nation” sign in Reliant is not going to go over well in Bristol, CN — but this was actually a minor issue on the board, with the PC police being unable to take a joke and all.*

Interestingly, Al Sharpton’s nephew was drafted by Houston last year.

    * I lie about when it dawned on ’em that this was not a bright nickname. The truth is much funnier. A Raider fan wandered into our board one day (we play Oakland in a few weeks) and said hello from Raider Nation. Someone responded “The only Nation around here is THE ARIAN NATION.” Hilarity (and hopefully a learning moment) ensued.

Oh he mentioned that. Explicitly said the reason he wanted to see Keyes was because he was curious how blacks would vote — on ideology or along race lines (thereby assuming they MUST be ideologically conservative). I didn’t bother to mention that 92% of the African Americans in that race voted for Obama over Keyes. I kind of want some nut to convince Keyes he has a shot. I figure one of the Coach’s gets fired soon; Childress has issues and the guy for the Cowboys (blanking on his name) has been on the hotseat forever.

Watching the Lions-Eagles game and the Lions seem to desperately need a QB, again.

I have memories of the 1990’s teams, with great WR’s, Barry Sanders, a good O-Line and a decent defense being a good QB away from being a contender. Hell, Scot Mitchell threw for 4,000 yards and 30 TD’s a couple of times. That’s how good the Lions skill players could make a QB look.

I think the Lions are building back to something similar again. They seem to have a good running back, good WR’s, a solid O-line and their defense has some good young players, but the back-up QB they have, Shawn Hill is awful. I haven’t seen Stafford play, so I don’t know if he’s any better.

As much as I thought WTF were they thinking, when the Eagles signed Vick, he’s definitely looking good compared to the Lions’ back-up QB. That depth at QB helped the Eagles to build a 28-17 4th Qtr lead.

    I hate my life today.

I have to watch Jeremy Maclin get a pushoff that would have made MJ envious, and the Lions make Mike Vick look like an actual NFL quarterback.

Then I bench Cincinnati’s D because I wasn’t sure they would lay an egg twice (zero frigging points last week) for Detroit, because I at least know Vick is good for a pick or two, and the Lions front four are pretty damn good and going up against a third string center.

And of course, Cincinnati shows up and the Lions get torched.

    Frigging wonderful.

If Stafford can quit being planted like crops by aggressive DE’s, he’s pretty good. When he left against the Bears, he was 11/15 for almost 100 yards, which looks pretty good when you see how sad Romo was.

I watched him for his three years here in Georgia and I guarantee he’s the real deal. That being said, he’s not invincible and if the Lions don’t protect him we won’t get a chance to find out.

Most of these recipes call for a packet of a dry soup mix as an ingredient-Lipton “Cup-a-Soup” tomato soup. Mrs J returned from a grocery run with word that they didn’t have any.

Yeah, I’ve noticed that over the years. What is it about Champaign-Urbana that keeps them from going there?

And that doesn’t surprise me about Buckner. He’s a big dude. I’d guess that he played TE, right?

@jeffreyw: Yeah, the canned tomato soup has a sweet flavor that isn’t in the cup of soup packet. I googled the recipe after you mentioned it earlier, and several recipes called for Italian salad dressing mix, but I didn’t see any with the cup of soup. I might have to play around with that. We eat a lot of chicken, and I’m always looking for new ways to get a different flavor. Thanks.

@Andy K: Jesse Jackson was on the football team for a year. I think the deeper winning tradition of Michigan and (the old) Irish have something to do with it. Illinois also had the “slush fund” scandal in the mid 60’s that really hurt. It seems like we’ll be ok for a couple of years, Mike White and Zook Rose Bowl teams but then just can’t sustain.

Quinn played D-Back (huh, the IU site notes he played for 2 years, my bad).

I didn’t know that there’d been a scandal there in the ’60s. That sucks. There’s a lot of football tradition there dating back to Zuppke (who coached the Muskegon Big Reds, iirc) and Grange.

Now the idyl has ended. Scandalized by the disclosure that needy Illinois athletes had received “walking-around money” from an alumni-financed slush fund, the Big Ten’s athletic directors voted last month to expel Illinois from the conference—unless the university fired Elliott as well as Basketball Coach Harry Combes and his assistant Howard Braun. Last week Illinois appealed the decision to the Big Ten board of faculty representatives, and got turned down cold.

And I know the love I have for you
Will grow and grow and grow, I think

A love that is strong a prune that is true

Why oh why was I born a baseball fan first and a football fan second?

Well, if you’re from the city, I’d guess that it’s because that’s basically where baseball was born- yeah, I know, right across the Hudson- and because the city has had a WS champion in every decade (except, maybe 1911-1920, unless the Giants won one in there that I’m forgetting) since the AL was born.

My perception has been that NYC has always been a baseball city first, and, since the ’40s, a basketball city second.

You know we got to sit around at home
    And watch this thing begin
But I bet there won’t be many live
    To see it really end
‘Cause the fire in the street
Ain’t like the fire in the heart
And in the eyes of all these people
Don’t you know that this could start
On any street in any town
In any state if any clown
Decides that now’s the time to fight
For some ideal he thinks is right
And if a million more agree
    There ain’t no Great Society
As it applies to you and me
    Our country isn’t free
And the law refuses to see
If all that you can ever be
    Is just a lousy janitor
Unless your uncle owns a store
You know that five in every four
Just won’t amount to nothin’ more
Gonna watch the rats go across the floor
And make up songs about being poor

From what I’ve heard, he was a good head coach, but he hadn’t been there too long before the scandal.

And, iirc, what got him in trouble is that he outbid the Suckeyes for a prized recruit, and when the issue came to light U of M voted for harder sanctions than would normally have been given because MSU had voted to send OSU to the Rose Bowl in a year (’73 or ’74) when OSU and U of M had finished tied for the conference title.

    Sometimes there is Karma.

In December 2000, the Wolverweenies came down to Cameron to play the Harvard of the South. At the end of the introduction of the visiting team, said visiting team decided to do some sort of dance on the Blue Devil logo at midcourt. This was not well received.
