Andrew and Jack Shafer’s reminiscence over the legacy of Martin Peretz, and quasi-defense of his bigotry, motivated me to do some of my own reflecting. To the present business, there is no actual defense of the statement “Muslim life is cheap, particularly to Muslims.” African-Americans are overrepresented among both the perpetrators and victims of homicide. And yet had a writer for The New Republic, in the midst of asserting that blacks should not enjoy constitutional protection, argued that “Black life is cheap, particularly to blacks,” and then doubled down on the assertion, I don’t think we’d be having this debate–emphasis on “think”…
My family thinks I’ve become a Democrat in the last few years (I haven’t), in part because I can’t stand Sarah Palin. I had a discussion with my Dad a while back now, we were talking about taxes and spending, and my point was simple, if the choice is tax and spend or borrow and spend, I’d go with the first, if only because it’ll be cheaper. Funny thing is, we both agreed that less spending (or at least smarter spending) would be ideal.
At this point, I remain of the same opinion that I’ve had since about 2000, one party deserves to lose and the other party doesn’t deserve to win. This is the inherent flaw with a de facto two party system.

Like an online petition makes a diff. Can we also sign one to close Gitmo and repeal DADT?

This was actually for DADT, not the Bush tax cuts.

Yep, I see how it goes.
Someone quotes a poll and blames everything on ‘them’, whoever ‘them’ is for Democrats looking at a potential meat grinder in November. Of course, rationally, ‘them’ aren’t very numerous or powerful at all, as can be noted by the fact that they almost never get anything they ask for in the political horsetrading that is making sausage, but we’re not asking for rationality here. We’re asking for someone to beat on because things are going to go badly for us and someone must be to blame.
Oh, and if you decide to stop beating the strawman and make things better for Democrats nationally? The big idea today is either to donate money to a candidate that’s supposedly DOOMED or sign an online petition that means balls.
Fuck that. Go do some GOTV. And stop beating the fucking strawman, he went flat months ago.
Just thought I would share this. While some so called progressives run round screaming Democrats do teh suck, on Thursday some key elements of Health Care Reform come in to law.
On September 23rd:
Children under 19 can no longer be rejected from health care plans due to pre-existing conditions.
New plans cannot exclude anyone from coverage for a pre-existing condition
Young adults can stay on their parents’ health plan until age 26
Insurers can no longer limit the amount of coverage someone can receive over their lifetime
Insurers can no longer take coverage away from children when they get sick
Oh and just to add some other good news, the Summer of Hate has hit the big FAIL.
Bloomberg is reporting the latest poll:-
A majority of likely voters supports Democrat Andrew Cuomo in his bid for New York governor against Republican Carl Paladino, a Rasmussen Reports poll shows. Fifty-four percent of likely voters favor Cuomo, the state’s attorney general, compared with 38 percent for Paladino, Rasmussen Reports said today. It’s the first survey of the state’s governor’s race the polling group has conducted since the Sept. 14 primaries.
Hm, that’s just good strategizing there, Senate Dems. Gays and Hispanics aren’t important parts of your midterm base, are they? Why do things like the DREAM Act and DADT repeal when we’ve got all these wonderful tax cuts instead?! Tax cuts, tax cuts, tax cuts, tax cuts, tax cuts. Om nom nom nom.

Weird. First off, the petition I saw in that space was for ending DADT. Second off, the formatting is really screwed up on Safari. The image overlaps a bunch of the page.

I’ve just straightened out three months of back pay owed me by a client, so should be able to shovel some cash towards our ActBlue candidates at the weekend. And I signed the petition.
Ran my last long training run ahead of the Chicago Marathon today: 24 miles in 4 hours. The only thing that worries me now is the one thing I can’t control: the weather. I’m really not liking these 70s and 80s I’m seeing in the forecast. If Hot Chicago shows up on race day, I am fucked. I might just go to Clarke’s and eat pancakes instead.

I’m trying to think clearly about this:
If we’re in for 2 years of government shutdowns and impeachment proceedings, we should be primed for a big D takeover in 2012. At the very least, that should mean that the Supreme Court doesn’t get packed with rightists. Which is something. I guess.
@RedKitten: Wahoo, Six hours. You do know that Dancing With the Stars comes on at the same time.
I swear, if a great show Chuck gets hurt in the ratings because people prefer watching desperate has-beens doing the quick-step, I will give up all hope for humanity.
Oh, there is much better out there, the debates had some killer stupid hypocrisy (when contrasted with current rethug positions) but I’m busy so ya’ll gotta go troll the youtubes on yer own.
