This email made me want to reach for a drink:

Former First Lady Nancy Reagan today announced plans to invite all of the leading contenders for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination to two debates at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum. The Reagan Presidential Foundation plans to play host to both the first GOP presidential debate of the 2012 election cycle in spring 2011 and a second GOP debate on the eve of the Super Tuesday primaries.

The Reagan Foundation has confirmed NBC News as the television partner and POLITICO as the online partner of the first debate.

The 2012 election is already underway. I want to cry.

Maybe those attending can best the number of times Ronald Reagan was mentioned by all participating in the 2008 debate.

This does present a unique opportunity in that the place will be humming with activity, and somebody could slip in during the confusion to take a steaming crap on some treasured bit of Reagan memorabilia. Maybe even the final resting place.

John Edwards and Hillary Rodham Clinton criticized Barack Obama’s praise of the Republican Party and Ronald Reagan… “Ronald Reagan, the man who busted unions, the man who did everything in his power to destroy the organized labor movement, the man who created a tax structure that favored the richest Americans against middle class and working families, … we know that Ronald Reagan is not an example of change for a presidential candidate running in the Democratic Party,” Edwards said.

Sad, but not really surprising. The 2008 Presidential campaign was well underway by Feb 2007. By that point, several people were officially running (not just “exploratory committee” or “encouraging pundits to wank about possible candidacy”). So, not really all that much different then last time.

Still, should be amusing to see whether Sarah shows up. Or whether she shows up and then quits halfway through the debate.

I agree. I think a large part of the Democratic success in ’08 was due to the Republicans’ exposure as complete and utter shitheels, both on the campaign trail and through the several preceding years of stupid-angerocracy.

So the more campaigning they do, the more they’ll annoy the public. Eventually they’ll learn to rely purely on non-specific “issue advertising” but until they do they’ll use a bunch of their gobs of money getting face time and looking like jackasses.

According to Wikipedia, Nancy Reagan took the same approach prior to the 2008 election:

Nancy Reagan hosted two 2008 Republican Presidential Candidates Debates at the Reagan Presidential Library, the first in May 2007 and the second in January 2008. While she did not participate in the discussions, she sat in the front row and listened as the men vying to become the nation’s 44th president claimed to be a rightful successor to her husband.

What this means is that the various Republican hopefuls are going to need to decide whether they are running within the next few months if they want to be seen as legitimate. Of course, I suppose certain candidates could skip the first debate and attend the second. I am curious whether the debate is by invitation or whether anyone can participate.

The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation is a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Ronald Reagan’s legacy of inspired freedom and his timeless principles of individual liberty, economic opportunity, global democracy, and national pride. It sustains the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum, the Reagan Center for Public Affairs, the Walter and Leonore Annenberg Presidential Learning Center and The Air Force One Pavilion.

Investors around the world say President Barack Obama is bad for the bottom line, even though U.S. corporations are on track for the biggest earnings growth in 22 years and the stock market is headed for its best back-to- back annual gains since 2004.

In other words, they’ve done the best they’ve done in decades, but they still hate Obama to death because he’s SOSHULIZT! and promotes a ‘bad investment environment’.

Because everyone did fucking hunky dory under Bush. And remember, these folks are apparently the only ones that matter unless they’re “Real Americans” (read: GOP voters and Teabaggers).

Can we just raise up the white flag now? It’s already fucking apparent that the country is owned in whole by the GOP and filthy rich companies and we’re just serfs, and they’re never gonna let that fucking change, ever.

I hope Sarah does show up. She will have been tweeting and facebooking for months before the date, “energizing her base” and when they show up by the hundreds and find that they can’t actually get in to make sure she wins, the event that follows will bring to mind the final bar scene in Shawn of the Dead.

I can see them now, genuflecting at the tomb of Reagan Maximus, founding father of REAL America, and then solemnly swearing to never compromise with the left, because that’s what the Gipper wanted. The only question is can the GOP get that warm, Kinkade glow to all those rosy cheek candidates. I am sure even Rubio will be white for that day.

But then if you were able to deal with reality, you wouldn’t still be supporting The Suit That Walked Like A Man.

What’s the opposite of an Obot? You know, the True Progressives who know the score, woke up to who Obama really is and now want everyone to know that they, and they alone see the truth?

Because really; if you don’t spend all day, every day, dogging Obama, you’re an Obot. If you don’t think the end all be all of gay rights is the elimination of DADT (not DOMA, or enacting ENDA) yesterday, you’re an Obot.

Is there any fucking subtlety left to the Democratic party? We’ve degenerated into a black and white, no middle ground party, in which it’s either you agree with everything posted on DailyKos or that Rachel Maddow says, or you’re a corporatist capitulator who reads teleprompters while snacking on the still beating heart of Russ Feingold.

Can’t I just like some things Obama does, hate some of the things he does, and still support him as President?

Criticize away. Obama certainly deserves so much of it, but there is a lot of good things there too. For once I would love for Liberals to win a damn Presidency and hold onto it for more than one or two terms.

Spending the next two years daydreaming about Rachel Maddow as President, or hoping and praying Russ Feingold and Alan Grayson primary Obama, is not going to do anything but hand the Presidency over to the Republicans.

Progressives do not understand how our republican party works!

These debates will be a good thing…

Naturally, the first debate will have three candidates. Mittens will realize after the first debate that we republicans are never going to nominate a Morman sect member.

By the time of the second debate, Sarah will still be a participant, but will realize that the neo-cons, the social conservatives, and the moneyed owners of the republican party have picked her opponent. As she realizes that The Tea Party is a corporately owned subsidiary of the republican party, she will drop out.

And, for our next president of the United States, we will select Jeb Bush.

    His qualifications are…
    – an original signer of the neo-con PNAC statement of principles
    – beloved by social conservatives
    – acknowledged by the corporate and wealthy owners of our political system as an integral part of The Bush Crime Family who will always be on their side

Good news! We don’t need an election in 2012 because Larry Sabato just made a chart showing us that Obama is like Clinton, but a total loser and Obama already lost the election that hasn’t happened yet.

Turns Republicans don’t need to nominate anyone or debate their positions. Turns out they don’t need to raise money and nothing that happens for the next two years will matter. Turns out the tantric teagasm electorate and the whiter-than-thou Real Murkins have this thing all wrapped up no matter what.

Money quote: “If President Obama is smart, he will try to salvage his term in the White House by announcing now that he will not undertake a hopeless campaign for reelection, and instead form a bipartisan national unity government to try to hold the nation together until his successor, inevitably a Republican, is selected in November 2012 … Barack Obama, henceforth called OTB (One Term Barack) in our work, is a one-term president. We look forward to the many columns and television commentaries that will echo our conclusion.”

So figure since Perry is the kind of fuckloone who hates the governments he is a shoe in for GOP nomination and we leftists can’t possibly soil our principles and vote for Barrack “Bush III” Obama so Perry is the next president.

So what can expect; de-solizations of medicare? Invasion Iran to reclaim our oil the Iranians stole? What’s prizes do we get with Perry?

Hard right country here we come hoody hoo!

I swear, sometimes I wonder how Democrats get elected at all with all this self mutilation

Not everybody holding a knife here is a Democrat, or for that matter a liberal. A quick read regarding what the Old Left had to say about FDR back in the 30s, or the New Left had to say about JFK and LBJ in the 60s, sheds a lot of light on contemporary political divisions and infighting which is otherwise obscure. Plus ca change.

I mean, I hear repeats and refrains from certain people saying the very same things they say at Redstate. I mean, I get the disappointment that President Obama isn’t the second coming of FDR, but at the end of the day, the Supreme Court would look a lot different had Gore been elected president, thus ensuring that Citizen’s United would never have gotten through at least not through this decade. People who threaten to primary this president messes all of us up in the long run. I just don’t see a primary challenge “strengthening” the President. Please tell me how this would work?

In other words, they’ve done the best they’ve done in decades, but they still hate Obama to death because he’s SOSHULIZT! and promotes a ‘bad investment environment’ threatening to raise the marginal tax rate and hurting their feelings.

The big mistake is believing that “investors” actually care about good returns. What they care about is being able to lord their money over the plebeians. They’ll still be richer than Croesus even without record profits, but being called bad names makes them feel less like Masters of the Universe, and that’s really bad.

The phasing of this is going correctly. We just have to wait out the gridlock for the next year plus a month. That will be the start of, not only the presidential campaign, but more importantly the recapture of the House. The country will have experienced the loons in the House, we will have had a black (albeit spineless, ineffectual) president under our belt. The country will be suffering one humongous fecal impaction and ready for some real change. We should be thinking about who will have the charisma and progressive politics to take the White House, help in the recapture of the House and be a progressive leader. Trying to breathe life into the One-Term-Wonder is like trying to patch a patch. It’s better to start over.

I think people need to retake their history class. If Obama was the second coming of FDR, lynching laws would still be in effect. Social Security will still be for white people and the Japanese would still be in internment camps.

FDR was a great president, but he definitely have warts.

    @SteveinSC:

@WyldPirate: Angle and Buck got kerbstomped because O’s base turned out in Nevada and Colo.
Cali is still painted blue, isnt it?
the midterms were just the revenge of the Heartland.
local victories as opposed to national.
i think what the midterms proved is that even mega turnout in the TP/GOP base wasn’t enough to turn anyplace red they didnt already own….and youth didnt vote– they never do in midterms.
in 2012, O will be on the ticket, and the playing field will be reversed.

What does this mean for 2012? Democrats — if they are expecting to do better than they did this time around — might actually be pleased that elections have become so strongly aligned to partisan orientation. They now have just 12 seats in which Mr. Obama won a minority of the vote to defend — whereas Republicans have 55 where he took the the majority. So if there is even a fairly modest shift back to Democrats in 2012, and the shift is again fairly uniform, they could be in a position to achieve quite a few gains.

I hereby claim my uber leftness and voted for technocrat intelligent Democrat Obama and will again in 2012. I’m even a registered Democrat. I have friends who are supremo leftists and they voted for Obama and will again. Why? Because it is understood that life and politics are relative in the grand scheme of what is worse for the U.S. Relativity is sometimes weighty, but life is such. Absolutism is either something not based in relative reality or those purists don’t give a flying fuck about the greatest good for the mostest folks.

So fuck you purists, you can go to hell in a handbasket proudly and screw the pooch. May I offer anyone some pie?

Because primarying the sitting President by his party has worked so well before.

Why, why, why do some progressives keep going back to this idea, as if we have no history to look at to show why this would be such a horrible idea?

American politics has turned into one continuous reality show. We all choose up sides and will fight to the death for the power to control other contestants. God, just don’t let me get voted off the island, or voted the “weak” one, or get voted the one who can’t dance. The humiliation of being on the losing side in this reality show just isn’t to be borne….just thinking about losing control makes me think of 2nd amendment remedies. Break a leg! The Show must go on.

@Jeffro: Indeedy! it will be pure unadulterated deliciousness. All the refugly candidates are awful.
Christie is FAT, Daniels is SHORT, Jeb is a BUSH, Rubio wont run until 2016, Romney is a MORMON, Johnson wears a TOUPE, Huck is a PREACHERMAN, Newt is INSANE, Pawlenty and Thune are invisible and Palin, as we all know, is a RETARD. It is waaaay to late for some fantasy outsider to jump in.

i LUFF Obama. i worked on his campaign.
he hasn’t let me down yet. He started running in 2004, with his speech at the DNC.
he doesn’t do culture war or partisanship….because i think he believes that is bad for the country.
i wish he would prosecute Bush for warcrimes tho….but he is too Lincoln for that. it would be as if Lincoln had had Jeff Davis hung for treason and stripped US citizenship from the whole confederate army.
the firebaggers and teabaggers don’t see it but we already won.
i know this because i can do math.

The worst part is that at both GOP debates at the Reagan library, each candidate will feel strongly compelled to begin each answer to each question or comment they utter with at least a 20-second sound byte of them verbally kissing Reagan’s ass with their knees figuratively on the ground. The best part is that a significant part of their time, words, and energy will be deflected from mendacious attacks against Obama, and directed instead toward a contest over which one of them can most convincingly claim to be the sincerest, most faithful disciple of St. Ronnie.

That’s exactly what happened when the GOP held a Presidential primary debate in 2008 at the Reagan library.

He’s young, so he can wait until 2016. As can Nicky in SC. They’ll be the “oh f__k we can’t win with just pissed off white people” option for the GOP when they lose in 2012.
