Early Morning Open Thread: Yay, Hyperbole!

Many, many thanks to commentor Comrade Darkness for the news that brilliant cartoonist Allie has a new post up at Hyperbole and a Half:

Dogs Don’t Understand Basic Concepts Like Moving
__
Packing all of your belongings into a U-Haul and then transporting them across several states is nearly as stressful and futile as trying to run away from lava in swim fins.
__
I know this because my boyfriend Duncan and I moved from Montana to Oregon last month. But as harrowing as the move was for us, it was nothing compared to the confusion and insecurity our two dogs had to endure.
__
Our first dog is – to put it delicately – simple-minded. Our other dog is a neurotic German shepherd mix with agonizingly low self-esteem who has taken on the role of “helper dog” for our simple dog. Neither dog is well-equipped with coping mechanisms of any kind…

You should click over and read the whole piece immediately. Unless you are eating, maybe, or at work in the sort of environment where fits of helpless laughter are considered ‘inappropriate’. Fair warning: If you have yet to be exposed to H&AH, it is the sort of blog that makes it very, very easy to lose all track of time. But reading it will improve your mood, and probably your day.

Looks like DADT will pass and Lieberman will get a fair amount of credit.

Remember how the Professional Left™ wanted to throw Lieberman out of the caucus and when he was kept, someone we all know went all Glenn Close in “Fatal Attraction” and bellowed it was a “BETRAYAL!”.

How will the Professional Left™ deal with the egg on their face?

Will they still launch a holy war to defeat him in 2012, and if they do, will anyone care after the biggest civil rights victory in 45 years?

In short, isn’t the repeal of DADT a significant blow to the Professional Left™ ability to raise funds and sow self serving dissension?

Anyways, congratulations to Lieberman on getting re-elected in 2012. Hell, I’m gonna send him a maximum contribution just pee off the PL™.

@Mike Kay (Democrat of the Century): Hmm. Collins and Lugar have announced they’re gonna help stop a filibuster, and Murkowski and Ensign have indicated they’re gonna vote for repeal.

And yet Mike Kay can only give props to his buddy Lieberman.

Kay must have had his wallet stolen by a hooker who looks like Jane Hamsher long, long ago.

I have a friend who is both a devout evangelical Christian and an Ayn Rand Objectivist. No, I have no idea how she fits both of those approaches to the world in her brain at the same time.

    I’m a liberal UU atheist.

But we both agree that H&AH is freaking amazing.

@NobodySpecial: I have to give him props, it’s on the noted right wing rag, Daily Kos.

But I love this. This is delicious. You guys who claim to be members of a reality based community are so overcome with emotion, specifically hatred, that you’re taking leave from your precious fealty to rationality, reason, and reality to ignore and discount all accounts, even by the Ayn Rand loving/fascist DKos, that the little midget from Connecticut deserves credit for rounding up votes for the bill he directly sponsored.

in short, you claim to be better than the teabaggers, but in reality you’re just as emotional and irrational.

Seriously, I’m happy that DADT is very close to being repealed but you’re killing my buzz since you seem intent on not actually letting me be happy. You’re actually no different from the professional left either.

If Lieberman hadn’t rounded up the votes but instead it was Feingold would you think the win less than perfect because people wouldn’t be crying enough?

@Suffern ACE: people like me made this possible, the pragmatists. It’s was the hotheads who wanted to cut off their nose to spite the little bastard for CT who endangered it. And for what? For what? So they could get payback for Lamont.

    this is a teachable moment.

This will happen again in the future. Hotheads will want to purge some ass like Lieberman from the party. But people should learn that it is wise you keep you enemies close, because you may need their future vote.

Purges and emotion solve nothing. But then again, I belong to a true reality based movement – the pragmatists.

@Mike Kay (Democrat of the Century): I saw your last comment. I thought it was equally as silly as your first comment. Your thesis seems to be that Joe Lieberman would vote against something he publicly said and privately thought was the right thing to do because his fee-fees would still be hurt if he had been kicked out of the caucus, or disciplined in some way, for voting against a bunch of things he publicly said and privately thought were the right things to do.

Here’s an equally reasonable counterfactual: Lieberman gets keelhauled and that serves pour encourager les autres. Then Harry Reid can tell Ben Nelson and Blanche Lincoln to quit fucking around on HCR and he has a credible threat to back him up. As it stands, Democratic senators know there are no penalties for destroying party discipline.

Of course if Harry Reid had the balls to do that, he’d have the balls to keep bringing up the defense authorization bill over and over, each time hammering the Republicans for their manifest hatred of “the troops”, until they slink off in abject humiliation. And I would have my own personal unicorn farting lavender-scented rainbows that drifted around my house, catching the sunlight in a most beguiling and attractive fashion.

Stuckinred: At least they want to go with you. My cat refuses to accept that I can be away from home for more than a day. He jumps on things while I’m packing, he snarls at the suitcase. However, he reserves his best for my return, The moment he hears the car in the driveway –and don’t ask how he knows it’s me, because usually I get picked up at their airport and not always by the same person — he goes to my bedroom and takes a dump on the bed… and stares at me with beady eyes as I complain.

And I don’t give a s/it how we got to repeal. It’s happening, and that’s all that matters. And since it will be repealed by Congress, it can’t be reinstated by fiat by any president.

I’d volunteer to put my boot to his back. Repealing DADT is simply the *right* thing to do, it’s a ridiculous law. You do not get a free pass from a career filled with craven mendacity just because for once you do the right thing. Wow, you think maybe that just might be setting the bar a bit low for our elected officials?

@Mike Kay (Democrat of the Century): Here’s a crazy freaking idea: you can dislike someone and disagree with 90% of what they stand for, and still work with them on those areas where you have common ground. There’s contradiction there, it’s called sucking it up and getting the job done. Aka bipartisanship. Aka governing. Lieberman is one the right side of an issue, which is great. I’m happy to agree with him for once, but that doesn’t change how I feel about his positions in general.
