I know everyone is cash strapped this time of year, but if you have a couple dollars that are not accounted for, how about considering giving yourself a little gift and sending some money to the good people at the ACLU and at Democracy Now! Both of these organizations are invaluable, and both need our support.
If you would like to give to the ACLU, their donation page is here. The ACLU really is one of my favorite organizations, and I’ve said before, they are you friend when you have no others. They are a pillar of what this country stands for, and the range of issues they address is rather wide.
If you would like to donate to Democracy Now! (click here to see the kind of work they do), their page is here.
Again, I know money is tight, and around here, with a car in the shop looking at several thousand in repairs, I’m in the same boat. But these are good groups, and if you can spare anything, now is a good time to give.
The Grand Panjandrum
I’ve been a member since 1974. I agree they may be the single most important organization when it comes to advocating for individual Constitutional rights. Too bad the Tea Party folks don’t get it.
ruemara
$5 if you’ll stop posting for the day.

I hope this isn’t out of line, but I run a little non-profit to send teachers to Honduras and pay their wages while they’re there. I’m kind of new to this, so I’m only working with one teacher now, but every month I can pay her wages, that’s $200 the school doesn’t have to pay, and can use for something else.
So if anybody wants to send a little my way, I’m trying to get January’s $200 now. You can give at http://www.bista.org.
Gracias.
amorphous
@ruemara: Why don’t you keep that in your wallet, then.
Michael D.
I know it’s petty, but I give to the ACLU just to piss conservatives off. Well, and they do a LOT of good.
After my house and NPR, they are my biggest tax deduction (tied with World Food Programme and CHRIS Rainbow Home.)

Just found this and had to pass it on. Harry Reid was given Dan Choi’s class ring and promised to give it back when DADT repeal was passed. Today he gave Dan Choi his ring back. It is a powerful video.

As I believe I noted last year, the best part of donating to the ACLU is that they send you a membership card you can put in your wallet. So you get to tell all your conservative friends that you are a card-carrying member of the ACLU and then proceed to prove it.

Please consider your local food bank as well. A lot of families are hurting this year.
eric
hey…are there any BJers who are really hurting these year and need help to make sure their kids have something under the tree. I know it is a little late, but there is still time. Life treats me and my daughter pretty well, so if there is anything i can do to help someone here this year. just say so and I am sure we can make arrangements to connect.
Peace to all.

@eric: That’s a good idea!

I could never get away with this with my cat. Never sit still long enough!!

@eric:
eric don’t want to harsh your mellow or anything like that but posting a general “can we help” post on a board leads you to all sorts of scams. Best to direct your goodwill to your local food banks, toys for tots, angel tree, etc. It is always best to put a face to the charity (Salvation Army or whatever), that what you always know that your donation is going to a truly needy cause as opposed to “I am an anonymous internet poster and I am dying of cancer” type scam.

And for those who want to support the ACLU – but would also like to get a tax donation deduction, consider giving to the ACLU Foundation.

@Litlebritdifrnt: i understand, but there are regulars here, along with me, who have been here for a very long time….we know who they are cause we have to put up with them the rest of the year ;)
I will be dubious of the “i have been a lurker only” requests,
if it doesnt work, it doesnt work, cant hurt to ask …
i appreciate the warning….

Is this snark?
seriously, is this snark?
Mike Kay (Democrat of the Century)
an 8-ball and some hookers. not for me, you understand, but for the children. they’d like to have a mother, even if just pretend for one day.
cyd
Citizens United.
Litlebritdifrnt
@eric: true. And if a BJ regular needs help, help will be given, without question. I love this community.
General Stuck
The ACLU are honest advocates, and by that i mean they always start out with taking a stand for the ideal, which is the way of advocacy, but are capable of nuance and tempering their stand via a wholistic examination from all sides, or at least acknowledging when the government has a point, as they litigate or advocate for civil rights. And nearly always respect and are open to facts/ all of them.
I am so poor right now, pauperism looks like a step up. But did you know John McCain was poor too, in the Hanoi Hilton, till he met a beer heiress/ and turned into E. Scrooge/ This is a true fact
Laura W.
@eric: Eric, you did some generous matching donations in BJ threads early this year for the Haiti earthquake relief fund, did you not?
eric
@Laura W.: yes. it was part of my year long war on christmas
Tonal Crow
On the ACLU, I wholeheartedly agree with John (that’s like, what, the first time?). They do a broad range of excellent work, year in and year out, on preserving and restoring our Constitutional rights.
On Democracy Now, I don’t know enough to say much, so I won’t.
Laura W.
@eric: Well, I have never forgotten you for that, because it was very motivating and generous.
I was going to give $48 to Larry O’D’s Desks for Malawi program in honor of two BJ friends who shall remain nameless and don’t deserve the honor anyway, but I really love what Mumphrey is doing up there at comment #3 and am happy he posted his good works again.
So I’ll give him the $50 and challenge you to match it!
Happy Holidays. You really rock.
eric
@Laura W.: ha…in your honor I have again mocked christmas in the amount of $50 to Bista…..thanks for the idea.
my offer still stands to folks in need.
Laura W.
@eric: Can I have $50?
;-)
eric
@Laura W.: LOL.
Mnemosyne
Do donations to non-humans count? I couldn’t think of a damn thing to get my mom for Christmas, so I made a donation to one of her local no-kill shelters in Phoenix. I think she’ll like it.
eric
@Mnemosyne: how does Billy the Kitty not have a home? seriously!
Mnemosyne
@eric:
This is why my dad forbade me from sponsoring an animal in her name. They’re currently petless and at least one cat or dog would end up with them. If not more.
Platonicspoof
Thanks, good timing.
In lieu of giving things, since the 2008 crash I’ve given to charities in the name of relatives. Last year a very close relative gave me Palin’s ‘Going Grifter’.
This xmas this same person mailed me Beck’s new book
‘Broken-When Was The Last Time You Trembled While Thinking About God?’*.
The ACLU shall receive.
*Not really; actually from page 247.

@Platonicspoof:
Hey, at least you’ll never run short on toilet paper.
Shadow's Mom
The ACLU year-end donation drive envelope was already sitting ready on my desk. I’ll be sending off a nice check early next week.
On top of that, my boss just notified me that he will be giving me a nice bonus this year. Not great, but nice, so I’ve teamed up with Laura W. and Erik with another $50 for Bista. Who’s gonna match me to pay January’s salary?
Happy holidays to everyone!
Shadow’s Mom, formerly KDP
pchomko
@cyd, yes, Citizens United.
If you’re still pissed at the ACLU, consider the (NJ-based) Hyacinth AIDS Foundation – they strongly opposed American’s Governor Christ [sic] Christie’s cuts targeting New Jersey HIV/AIDS victims, and helped to restore a good deal of funding that would’ve otherwise been slashed. I live in PA, work in NJ, gave $50 just last night. They don’t operate on the same scale as the ACLU, granted, but they’re effective in New Jersey and I’m worried they’ll need to do a lot more between now and whenever Christie’s booted out of office.
Restrung
I’m still pulling my socks up to donate some cash to the local food bank. Times are tough and I’m unemployed. I’m not freekin’ going hungry, though.
Who’s with me? Just click “like” on this comment and go kill those Russians for me and we’ll meet back in zooskville. thanks

@Mnemosyne:
Those books are not fit to wipe my ass. And neither are the authors.
Mumphrey
I’d like to thank the three people who each pitched in $50. I’ll be sending you all an official thank you letter-receipt in the mail once everything settles down at our house after Christmas. You can use it if you want to deduct it from your taxes.
Thank you all, again.
Shadow's Mom
@Mumphrey: It was my great pleasure to help out. Having the opportunity to learn is such an important part of providing young people with the tools that can allow them to even define aspirations, much less achieve them.
I just wish this bleg post was not shortly to be lost to the back pages and archives.
