Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

Let there be snark.

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

When do the post office & the dmv weigh in on the wuhan virus?

The words do not have to be perfect.

We still have time to mess this up!

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

This blog will pay for itself.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

After giving the Republicans so much red meat in that speech (which both parties know most of the stuff won’t happen because we can’t pay for any of it) I wonder what they will complain about–as Keith Olbermann asked, “the color of his tie?”

After taking a piss break during the bland Stepford-Wife Paul Whatshisname speaking for the Republican reply, I can’t wait to watch the queen of batshit, Michele Bachmann.

The first half of the speech was pretty bold, but delivered in a very sober way. Obama is beginning to move the overton window in anticipation of his re-election. The latter half was boilerplate.

I quick- read the thread title as “The SotU Goes Ever On (Apathy).”

I take great comfort from the fact that the Republic, while not flourishing as it might, is on an even enough keel that going through the ceremonial motions is once again the appropriate rhetorical stance.

Save the great speeches for when the asteroid is incoming, is my feeling.

Boy, there were a LOT of autograph seekers. One woman whose face never quite came into focus on CNN said “They sat me next to Joe Wilson, and I kept him from [inaudible] ”

That got a big grin out of the President, but then so did a lot of other inaudible comments…

Ros-Lehtinen is suggesting that we have forgotten that the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence demands a limited government. And otherwise we have no individual liberties. It does too much. Too big. Too big. Too big.

The Democrats want big government, love spending money. They want more taxes. In 2 years they’ve gone wild with spending (because under Bush Jr. and the Republican triumvirate 2002-2006, we were totally fucking all about balanced budgets and shrinking government).

Their day of reckoning has coming — and we Republicans have arrived just in time to do it.

The government’s bad policies inspired Wall Street to collapse.

We succeeded as the most awesomest bestest richest magical fucking super terrific country anyone ever even imagined existing on this Urf because we had limited gubmit and a freemarkit, and in Washington they forgot this.

The CNN insta-poll, much like the ones during the presidential and Veep debates in 2008, should be illustrative to Democrats.

Stop listening to the fucking Villagers. Stop watching Fox News. Don’t worry about what the GOP says America believes or their portrayal of Democrats.

Enough of the American public is onboard with the Democratic agenda, should we choose to present it in the affirmative and defend it, that we need not worry. The 30%+ who are wingnuts aren’t voting for us no matter what compromise we offer. Adopting a defensive crouch, compromising away core principles (SS anyone?) does nothing but depress the base and turn off potential independent/non-affiliated voters.

Basically, we don’t need to move any further left, or further right. Where we are is fine. This speech is an excellent reminder of it.

From NYT, even the Tea Party Express had the brains to not mention Bachmann’s speech that they sponsored:

Ms. Bachmann’s brief remarks were billed as a Tea Party response, sponsored in part by the Tea Party Express, one of the groups leading the movement that swept Republicans into office in November.
    __
But in an oddity, the Web site for the Tea Party Express ignored Ms. Bachmann completely.
    __
While CNN broadcast her remarks live, the Tea Party Express Web site instead broadcast a live stream from the White House featuring aides taking questions and talking about Mr. Obama’s speech.

Coming in late is a mistake. Y’all drank all the booze, there’s nothing but crumbs left in the chips bowl, and it looks like someone used the party banner for a napkin.

Anyway: I saw the SOTU while on the elliptic at the gym, and I have to say Obama speeches are pretty good to exercise by.

The SOTU wasn’t bad. Since I watched it on C-SPAN, without benefit of talking heads, and without liveblog commentary, I thought it was a good speech. I agree that we need what amounts to a “space race” in terms of education, basic research, and new technology development. It’s an ambitious domestic agenda, that’s for sure, and it’ll be interesting to see how much he follows through on it.

Two things really stood out for me: His call to end oil bidness subsidies, and to replace NCLB. Definitely good ideas; let’s see if either or both happen.

I missed Bachmann’s psychotic word salad – “missed” as in, “refused to watch.” Which is kind of a pity, because it sounds like she was a hoot. Wonder what would happen if someone slipped her some good acid: would anyone notice? Would she suddenly become lucid?

Congressman Ryan, if the national debt is one of your greatest concerns as a parent, that means you are a shitty parent.

So where does the national debt come in on the Right-Wing Fear-O-Meter relative to the activist gay left? I mean we know, from listening to Andrew Breitbart that the activist gay left is scarier than Al Qaeda but where does the national debt fit in? Is it more scary than Al Qaeda but less scary than the activist gay left, is it more scary than the activist gay left and Al Qaeda? Or is it less scary than Al Qaeda, which means that it’s also less scary than the activist gay left.

    @Wile E. Quixote:

“activist gay left” is just begging to be re/misspelled activest gay left, improper though it may be.

you know how the fundies made peace with the idea of israel, and now they are all about the old testament? i mean they love an israel that might go armageddon at any time. because they can rationalize that it brings about the end times prophesy and the once and for all proof of who wears the nicest hats to church is the person closest to god type thing….

why doesn’t this work for teh gay as well? i mean, theoretically nothing brings on the oldsmitey power of god like teh gay, right, and they want the one final true end smite? seems like they should want things to be as gay as gay can be? i mean if they want to be consistent….

of course really its about breitbart and his type saying, “dude, its ok if you’re gay, just don’t be such a fag about it, you’re making me horn-erp-nervous.” when you say you think its a choice, you are really saying its an option you might consider, because for you it might be a choice.
