Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Thanks for reminding me that Van Jones needs to be slapped.

“woke” is the new caravan.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

This fight is for everything.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

We’ll be taking my thoughts and prayers to the ballot box.

I wonder if trump will be tried as an adult.

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

Following reporting rules is only for the little people, apparently.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

* Freddie is funny when he’s pissed.

* Markos Moulitsas’ media empire, Vox communications Media, is launching a new site devoted to gaming. Vox already has had great success with Sportsbook Sports Blog Nation and their new tech site The Verge is already better than any other general-interest tech site, so I assume this site will also be great.

* One of the reasons the Verge is a good site is because it blends good writing with good tech. The user commenting section is the smoothest I’ve ever used, and they also use an innovation called “story streams”. Here’s one on SOPA, the anti-piracy legislation that wants to break the Internet to stop piracy.

Obama tells the Senate GOP to go pound sand. (recess appointment for Richard Cordry to the consumer watchdog agency, even though the Senate is nominally in session)

    Edit: From the AP:

Obama’s decision to make a recess appointment is certain to cause an uproar from Capitol Hill to Wall Street. He is essentially declaring the Senate’s short off-and-on legislative sessions a sham intended to block his appointments.

@El Tiburon: The DailyKos strategy seems to be to set up a pseudo-paywall by adding so many scripts that if you click in it’ll freeze up your machine. I’ve tried from 2 different computers, tried different browsers – still doesn’t work.

    So fuck ’em.

@dmsilev: Of course, he hasn’t really accomplished anything in over three years; a nothingburger HCR; killing Osama when everyone would have done it (and only because Bush personally tortured KSM); Wall St reform which was basically rubbish because, you know, Wall St still exists; and all the other things that we would just expect from a Democratic President so no credit there. And even when he fights, it’s for things like gutting social security (aka the payroll tax cut) and for things like this which is basically a middle finger to real progressives like Elizabeth Warren.

Quite possible the most disappointing President I’ve ever experienced cos all he’s done is things I expect Democratic Presidents (or just any President really) to do with the addition of HCR and Wall Street reform.

One of my co-workers made homemade doggie biscuits and brought some in for my doggies. They are adorable (the biscuits)! Sadly, they are obviously meant for tiny lapdogs and my two 90-pounders will eat the whole bag in one bite.

But I’m going to get the recipe from her and make some larger ones. I just hope I can find cute little bone cookie cutters in a larger (much larger) size.

I hate the commentariat over there (mostly) and TNC’s too nice to people who don’t deserve any sort of respect. But, man, when he’s on (as he is in almost all of his Civil War posts), he’s ON. He nails Paul in this one.

The Onion summarizes Obama’s position in the 2012 election:

    http://www.theonion.com/articles/obama-openly-asks-nation-why-on-earth-he-would-wan,26933/

Lots of good stuff, but I thought this was perfect:

“I have a pen and some paper right here,” Obama said Wednesday morning at a town hall meeting in Ohio. “Let’s list the pros and cons of being president. Con: There are people out there who literally want to shoot you dead. Con: We live in a country seriously considering a Newt Gingrich White House. Con: You can help 40 million Americans receive health care, sign legislation that regulates a financial system run amok, give the order to kill Osama bin Laden, help topple Muammar Qaddafi’s tyrannical regime without losing the life of one American soldier, end the war in Iraq, repeal Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, stave off a second Great Depression, take out more than 30 top al- Qaeda leaders, and somehow everyone still calls you the next Jimmy Carter.”

    @Schlemizel: (#16)

Appreciate your re-posting this TNC column (having missed it earlier). Indeed, a superb essay, with this devastating comparison:

Both Paul and Farrakhan, in their glamour, inspired the young, the disaffected, the disillusioned.

Early reports suggest that Paul received the majority of caucus votes cast by young Iowans. While I’ll await later analysis (the result may be due to mischief by Democratic and/or independent voters), on its face this is an alarming harbinger of what color shirt may be in fashion for GOP youth.
