The recent comments column is gone forever. We discovered that it was the cause of a serious decline in server performance and really slowed down the loading of the page. I am not sure why, but it just killed load times, so we yanked it for good. Sorry.

Big front page story in today’s NYT on the pervasive use of solitary confinement in the California prison system.
But shockingly Cole and the greater righteous blogosphere are silent, even though this torture is being practiced on a large scale in the largest state in the country.

@John Cole: That does not make sense! But more important, you have to ask yourself: What does this have to do with this case? Nothing. Ladies and gentlemen, it has nothing to do with this case! It does not make sense! Look at me. I’m a lawyer defending a major record company, and I’m talkin’ about Chewbacca! Does that make sense? Ladies and gentlemen, I am not making any sense! None of this makes sense! And so you have to remember, when you’re in that jury room deliberatin’ and conjugatin’ the Emancipation Proclamation, does it make sense? No! Ladies and gentlemen of this supposed jury, it does not make sense!

John Cole, are you still a dedicated tea drinker? I just heard something on today’s NPR show ‘The Splendid Table’ from guest and tea merchant/expert Bill Waddington about a category of teas from western China known collectively as dark teas. Apparently these teas rarely make it to the West due to shipping challenges; they’ve traditionally traveled westward to local/regional areas instead.
One thing that sets them apart from most common teas we know is the presence of live (microbiological) cultures in the tea itself (comparable to yogurt, I assume). One example is called Puerh, sold by Waddington at his online site.
I couldn’t find any way to listen to just this particular clip by its lonesome; here’s an in-studio YouTube that captured a small part of that segment (2:01; some shaky camera work there).

I wonder if that ‘Recent Comments’ feature – which I liked, FTR- slowed things down because it was set to respond with every new comment. Assuming that was the case, perhaps the routine could be recoded to engage on a ‘per minute’ (or whatever) basis.
This isn’t a request to bring it back, more of an inquiry to those who know of such things. I haven’t done programming since the 70s – FORTRAN and BASIC represent, yo! – and I assume there has been some evolution in that field over the ensuing years.

Oh and may I say that giving your significant other home IVs sucks. DH has pneumonia he is on daily treatments of IV antibiotics, they sent him home with two IV treatments and instructions for me to do it. At about step two of the instructions I noticed an air bubble in the IV, which freaked me the fuck out, cause you know I have seen all those movies where putting an air bubble in the IV kills people. @Elizabelle: Gotta hope the Buckeye’s win so I can say my sad Illini beat the National Champs!
Corner Stone
@Elizabelle: I just don’t care for any OSU sports program. I work with a good guy who’s a Kansas alum so that’s ok, but not pumped about either team. Just don’t like OSU.

@Corner Stone: A good deal of the “slop” came from the push.

@179, Got it right, for once.
Have no idea with to expect with this next game, though. As a native Alabamian I hate TOSU with a fierce and deep passion, but Kansas sucks balls, as well, so who knows?

@sharl: I haven’t used Firefox for a while and had forgotten about the rss support built in. That should work well for seeing recent comments without leaving the blog for a reader view.
Raven
@Corner Stone: Three ex Illini coaches in that conference now, Self, Kruger and Weber.

@Jay S:
Yes, FF_v11 seems to be working fine.
After my last comment, I tried a right-click on the icon, and the pop-up menu included “Reload Live Bookmark”. That’s all I need.
It looks like the rss does reload on its own, but not at a very fast rate. I’m still checking that out though; why be productive, after all?

@sharl:
One minor drawback of the rss approach for Recent Comments – a relatively minor one, IMO – at least in Firefox (v11) – is that long titles for the original posts will crowd out the commenter’s name, since the latter comes at the end of the entry in the Live Bookmark drop-down listing. So this feature won’t be as useful for long-titled posts.
I hope the FPers never pass up the opportunity for a clever title because of this, even if it results in great length; although it’s a thang, it’s not a Big Thang.

Baby-back ribs and brownies on the menu for tomorrow- ala Hildebrand’s nine-year old. She is exceptionally pleased with the rub and the braising liquid – and I must say, I agree.
Jay S
@sharl: That’s one advantage for a full blown reader app.

@PurpleGirl: I did Earth Hour. I lit a bunch of candles, and turned off lights, turned off the TV and computer monitor. It was nice sitting in the dark quiet with candle light and having dessert. Feeling very relaxed so I’m off to the bedroom to read now.
Jay S
@Jay S: I fired up firefox and after some reconfiguring got it to do a live bookmark. On my version when you mouse over a truncated comment, it expands the line in flyover text.
Corner Stone
@Raven:
Sounds like a few drunken nights I wish I could forget.
OH!!
sharl
@Jay S:
Thanks, I didn’t think to try that. Mousing over individual comment notices in the pop-up* list works for me as well in that same way – the full OP_title-plus-commenter_name combination shows up in the floyover text.
*actually the list pops downward, to be pedantic (in the 2-dimensional sense)

I did read it, John, and ignore him. The first few paragraphs were horrifying but the gist of the story was about how the California prison authorities were trying to take people out of solitary confinement if they were only a gang associate and if it would work or not. Based on that article, you would have to know a lot more about California prisons to write a decent blog post. I am checking to see now if TalkLeft had anything because this is much more their cup of tea.

It was a very slow few days at TalkLeft, but nothing.
