Cruised through Zappa Live at the Fillmore East ’71 and moved, seamlessly, into Rage Against the Machine and every Chris Cornell song I own (how do you listen to Outshined without having chills at those vocals? HOW? MAKE IT LOUDERERER AND PLAY IT AGAIN!!).
Things are just going downhill. But the music keeps getting louder and more betterer.
Not long before we just pass out to Paul’s Boutique.

I hope there’s some Temple of the Dog in that Cornell playlist

Blessed is the fenced yard. Let the dogs out. Let the dogs in. Get back in bed.

Never really into Zappa, then or now.
However my dog does have gas.

Hippy. It all sounds sorta gay compared to the Dead Boys (not that there is anything wrong with that).

Hi, I’m Jimmy Carl Black and I’m the Indian in the group. . .

The kind of post that makes me wish that posts were timestamped here again…
Rosalita
@Alexandra:
I was just looking for that, that’s half the fun of John’s hammered posts.

@Rosalita:
It’s a little hard to find, but it’s there.

John, are you okay?
Rosalita
@SiubhanDuinne: oh, I see it now. thanks!

John: You got over being a Republican, you can get over that Zappa creep.

Do not diss the Zappa!

@forked tongue: sullivan noticed at least.
i guess sully still reads cole, even if cole doesn’t read him.
;)

Hmm, just noticed there are no time stamps on the initial posts. That kills a bit of the fun when Cole drunk-posts.

sigh. To be 41 again. Enjoy the next 10 years, Cole. After 50 or so, you’ll still want to party and post at 3:30 a.m, but will feel like shit when you wake up.

If you like Zappa, you should check out Umphrey’s McGee

Hey John I have a DVD Audio version of that show that is spectacular. I tried finding a version on the shopping sites but can’t find one. I got it in the 90’s so….

Hey man! Sounds like you had a party that was worth the hangover! Go get hydrated, take some aspirin (not ibuprofin – that shit plus alcohol will kill your liver) and get horizontal.

My time was a bit earlier, the late 60’s in the SF bay, but I SO MISS THE MUSIC.

My first Mother’s Show was in the summer of ’71, shortly after the Fillmore show. We all sang along to Happy Together.

Cole,
‘Black Napkins’ on that Fillmore CD?
I saw Zappa play it on some VH1 special years back and was blown by his guitar playing. One of my favorite tunes by him.
bob_is_boring
It’s hard to “rage” against “the machine” in 4/4 on Sony Records.

@bob_is_boring:
As a drummer who has played in bands for years (I almost said “musician”, but I know better by now), what is the acceptable time signature for “raging”? 7/8? 3/4? I always found pounding out a nasty 4/4 groove to be rather cathartic and awesome, instead of doing math onstage. :)

My son is the same age, only hooked on Van Halen.

this vid of neil young doing ‘old man’ solo is pretty incredible, in my book. obviously taped right at the time the album version was recorded – his playing is wonderful, and his voice is just out of this world.

I had heard that Paul’s Boutique was great, but I didn’t take the chance to hear it until last year. That long, spacy intro moves into the sweet bounce of Shake Your Rump, and when I heard that fucking awesome slashing funk guitar appear and disappear at the end of the first verse, I snapped to attention. What. Was. THAT!! It was instant partytime, and kept me listening closely to the dozens of great, intense, funny, innovative samples, all around supertight beats and raps.
I give thanks for the art of the Beastie Boys and Dust Brothers.

@kasnarski:
Nah, “Napkins” is a much newer composition. Cole, check out Frank’s “One Size Fits All”, amazing record much of it live. Or if it’s the comedy band porn rock ye crave, check out “Zappa – Carnegie Hall” “Divan” on disk three…
bob_is_boring
@TheYankeeApologist:
I’m not sure, but if “the machine” has a time signature, it’s definitely 4/4. Nothing could be more normative/hegemonic.

@SiubhanDuinne: So given this timestamp, I guess we can assume that John Cole lives in Iceland? It’s 12:43 am on EDT. I have no idea where he really lives but if it is actually Iceland there are some good bands there. Aside from Bjork, I would recommend Sigur Ros.
