My breastfeeding advocate wife approves of boobman! Also, they are trying to cut the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program out of the Farm Bill so get all pissed about that when you have a minute.
Lily’s a good pooch to be so patient with the boy.
And dare I say it…that’s a pretty good godson you’ve got there, John. :)

I love that some animals are so gentle with baby humans. I have one toy dog out of my pack who is great with kids, really likes kids. The other toy dogs just want to get those unpredictable wrong-size humans *away* from them. And I had a cat who became a rag doll around children. Like people, some animals have the nurturing gene, and some do not. Lily obviously has it in spades, which is why she’s done such a great job raising John.
Every time I see Lily it amazes me how far she has come since you first brought her home. I remember her staying under the desk and being afraid to go anywhere and now look at her! Playing with kids and that is not a small feat for a dog not used to kids. How adorable (both of them)!

The puddins are so cute together! Cole is a beautiful little boy. The middle photo just slays me. Serious paw examination going on there.
I had a big bad black cat named Buddy who would cut you as soon as look at you, but for some reason he understood that little kids were different, and he was infinitely patient with them. I really miss that boy.

Lily is amazed that she is no longer the tiniest one present. This is so sweet my teeth may start falling right out of my jaw any second!

@greennotGreen: Our 35 lb dog (mix of some stuff that we can’t figure out) treated our two oldest as playthings. When our youngest was a baby (she was 4 when he was born) she would treat him as her child. While our oldest really couldn’t do much more than pet her, she would let the youngest climb on her. When he cried, she would come running.
Young Cole also has a sock monkey, I see. AWESOME.
I don’t know why the sock monkey seems to endure with kids while other toys come and go. I had one as a kid and got another one when my niece was a baby; both she and my nephew carried it around with them whenever they came to visit. These days, the random babies that come by with friends always go straight for the sock monkey. It just never goes out of style with the kidlets.

Mr. Cole,
One thing that has dogged me forever since discovering Balloon-Juice. You seem like quite the decent guy with a decent family. Are you sure you were ever really a Republican?
@gogol’s wife: I’ve seen that before too. My cat Keba will not give any other human being the time of day (she’ll disappear), but will (still grudgingly) allow toddlers to check her out (if they’re cautioned the whole time to be gentle).

@muddy: Thanks muddy. Any theories? Earwig? Witch’s curse? Flouridation?

@Jennifer: I had a sock monkey set (girl and bot) with matching red outfits, a gift from my grandma. I wore them out as a kid with love and play. My oldest son had a purple sock monkey that he adored as a baby and te youngest ha a mini old-school sock monkey that he wore the stuffing out of. One I my fab Christmas ornaments is a sock monkey, so I understand your love for them.
And the Boobman tshirt is wonderful!

@gogol’s wife: When I was a baby, my parents had a Siamese cat who, as my mom describes it, thought she was a German Shepard. Very territorial and aggressive about it, etc. A lot of people were scared of that cat. However, she used to like to sit on the rim of my crib and flick her tail back and forth inside it for me to grab at.
Which of course caused no end of heartache from people who had had bad experiences with that cat. “Omigod, the cat is going to kill the baby!”

Great pictures – is Rosie being as gentle?
Our big boy Otto (85 pound AmStaff) has always been very patient with kidlets – tug his ears, play with his big teeth, whatever. Daisy too (~70 pounds) – we had first-time parents visiting once with their new baby and they were too nervous about Daisy, so we ordered her to stay away from the baby. We shortly caught her sneaking up behind the stroller and using a gap in the back to ever-so-gently kiss the baby. She wasn’t going to be denied showing the baby some love…

I haven’t been sleeping well and now I’m nodding off while sitting on a bench in the laundromat waiting for my clothes to dry.
(I’ve been super lazy about laundry the past few weeks and had to resort to the laundromat so I could do 5 loads at once.)
I gave a onesie to a friend of mine for her second baby – this was something like 15 years ago now – that was white and had “got milk?” on the front of it.
You give your godson some of that local ale you’re always prattling on about, he just might acheive drunk baby fame

Note the total and complete trust the two innocent creatures have in each other — as evidenced by the doggie lying on her back, and the baby’s calm acceptance of the wet nose in his face.
