Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

We still have time to mess this up!

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Republicans: The threats are dire, but my tickets are non-refundable!

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

We can’t confuse what’s necessary to win elections with the policies that we want to implement when we do.

Republicans cannot even be trusted with their own money.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

Washington Post Catch and Kill, not noticeably better than the Enquirer’s.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

Fear or fury? The choice is ours.

DeSantis transforming Florida into 1930s Germany with gators and theme parks.

Let the trolls come, and then ignore them. that’s the worst thing you can do to a troll.

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

If you voted for Trump, you don’t get to speak about ethics, morals, or rule of law.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires Republicans to act in good faith.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

Cancel the cowardly Times and Post and set up an equivalent monthly donation to ProPublica.

When I was faster i was always behind.

Yeah (via), at this point the once and future queen of the Republican party will say anything just to get attention:

It’s about time our president stood up for America and condemned these Islamic extremists. I realize there must be a lot on his mind these days – what with our economy’s abysmal jobless numbers and Moody’s new warning about yet another downgrade to our nation’s credit rating due to the current administration’s failure to come up with a credible deficit reduction plan. And, of course, he has a busy schedule – with all those rounds of golf, softball interviews with the “Pimp with the Limp,” and fundraising dinners with his corporate cronies. But our nation’s security should be of utmost importance to our Commander-in-chief. America can’t afford any more “leading from behind” in such a dangerous world. We already know that President Obama likes to “speak softly” to our enemies. If he doesn’t have a “big stick” to carry, maybe it’s time for him to grow one.

(bold Wonkette)

My all time favorite Palin-fluffery was Chuck Lane’s “Sandra Day O’Palin” piece.

Google tells me the “Pimp With A Limp” is Miami DJ and radio host who interviewed the president and broadcast the interview yesterday. The Obama campaign was told that it would be broadcast Monday.

Of course, this is History’s Greatest Outrage(R) to the right wing. How dare Obama sit down for an interview with – gasp – a DJ, and a non-white one at that? And to top it off, Obama has the gall to allow it to be broadcast on 9/11??? What kind of President can’t even control the exact date and time that his pre-recorded interviews air? The nerve!

    Panicking:

Facing criticism for its aggressive and politically-charged response to Tuesday’s violent attacks on the American embassies in Egypt and Libya, Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign is quietly advising Republicans how to respond to questions about the campaign’s handling of the episode.
In talking points currently being pushed to Republican leaders and top surrogates, the Romney campaign recommends attacking President’s Obama “foreign policy of weakness” and dismissing questions about how the campaign responded to the crisis last night.
A sample response, as proposed by the Romney campaign officials in Boston:
“Did Governor Romney ‘jump the gun’ last night in releasing his statement?”
“No. It is never too soon to stand up for American values and interests.”

Enough about Palin. She’s utterly irrelevant. (Though I’m sure she will draw plenty of right-wingers to the New Orleans Investment Conference, whatever that is.)

The real news today is mainstream Republicans calling out Romney for his disgraceful response to the attacks.

I still believe that a competent GOP presidential campaign could have made Obama suffer for this. Instead, Mitt created his very own “Lehman moment.”

The whole affair is perfectly summarized by John Lundin (h/t Sully):

“A Jewish idiot makes a film, a Christian idiot promotes it, Muslim idiots kill over it, and Republican idiots condemn Obama.”

I linked to this before, but I just read it again and it really is incredible.

Republican foreign policy heavyweights are absolutely HAMMERING Mitt over his Benghazi response.

I really have to say, when I first heard of this attack, it had me worried about the next two months. I mean, it just reeks too much of an October surprise. It’s exactly what Romney needed to get him back on level terms. And, to be perfectly honest, I didn’t think Romney’s reaction would harm him. At this point, it’s par for the course for Republicans to falsely accuse Obama of just about anything.

But here’s something that’s clearer to me today than yesterday. The GOP establishment, such as it is, HATES Mitt. And, the media doesn’t love him either. He’s just not getting the kid-gloves treatment that Bush and McCain got.

I reluctantly now contribute to any Palin thread (as it probably only serves to keep her very dim ember of popularity alive). I agree that there is plenty to attack her on without referring to her appearance. (You sure don’t see a lot of people pointing out that Steve King of Iowa is not likely to appear on the cover of GQ anytime soon.)

I just hope she goes away soon and for good, but she probably won’t. Even the mentally ill Victoria Jackson pops up every other month though she doesn’t appear to be doing any actual acting anymore.

Any chance we could convince Palin that America wants to play hide-and-seek with her — and that not look for her?

Honestly, it looks to me like she’s trying her hand at self-deprecating humor with her reference to “Obama not being able to see Egypt from his house” and her wondering a few days ago why any big, scary Democratic politician would even know who little, ol’ Sarah is….

    @srv:
I’d take Greenwald’s bullshit a lot more seriously had he said a peep during the run-up to the Iraq war, when it would have mattered. Instead, he kept his doubts to himself back then.
    (via).

During the lead-up to the invasion, I was concerned that the hell-bent focus on invading Iraq was being driven by agendas and strategic objectives that had nothing to do with terrorism or the 9/11 attacks. The overt rationale for the invasion was exceedingly weak, particularly given that it would lead to an open-ended, incalculably costly, and intensely risky preemptive war. Around the same time, it was revealed that an invasion of Iraq and the removal of Saddam Hussein had been high on the agenda of various senior administration officials long before September 11. Despite these doubts, concerns, and grounds for ambivalence, I had not abandoned my trust in the Bush administration. Between the president’s performance in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, the swift removal of the Taliban in Afghanistan, and the fact that I wanted the president to succeed, because my loyalty is to my country and he was the leader of my country, I still gave the administration the benefit of the doubt. I believed then that the president was entitled to have his national security judgment deferred to, and to the extent that I was able to develop a definitive view, I accepted his judgment that American security really would be enhanced by the invasion of this sovereign country.

    (boldface mine).

This in a time when ‘war’ meant hundreds or thousands of innocent civilian deaths per attack, as opposed to a handful. And yes, Sullivan, Yglesias and Marshal were for the invasion too, at first. They matured and admitted they were wrong.

But Greenwald? I see nothing but whiny opportunism there, grabbing for the mouseclicks that a contrarian view inevitably brings.

I inherited my grandmother’s Very Long Memory. And I was there during the very early days of blogging. So fuck Greenwald, sincerely.

He said he did not know “Bacile”‘s real name. He said Bacile contacted him because he leads anti-Islam protests outside of mosques and schools, and because, he said, he is a Vietnam veteran and an expert on uncovering al Qaeda cells in California. “After 9/11 I went out to look for terror cells in California and found them, piece of cake

After reading that Op-Ed in the NYT yesterday, I don’t think it is fair to describe 9/11 as an “intelligence fuckup”. As the OpEd makes very clear, the intelligence was there, and it was given to Bush multiple times. The fuckup should be placed squarely on the shoulders of George W. Bush and Richard Bruce Cheney. They fucked it up. They ignored the warnings. And they should bear the brunt of the responsibility, not some CIA analysts who did their jobs and were dismissed.
