I’m trying to plan the DC meet-up. I’ll be in Arlington February 10-13. Some people I’ve spoken to said the 10th is no good for them. The 12th is Mardi Gras but…also too, I may try to fly out late on the 12th if I get my work done that day (tho probably I won’t fly til 10:30 pm). How about the 11th? Or is Monday a bad day for these things? Let me know what you think, DC people.

it’s my wife’s birthday sorry buddy

Monday the 11th sounds ideal to me.
Yutsano
Wrong Washington Dougie. :P
Cheryl from Maryland
Out of town on business that day. Darn.
Xantar
I can come running down from Baltimore.
Valdivia
Monday or Tuesday both work for me.
Face
OT, but this shit is so ridiculous as to be funny. Comment section is spot-on, too.
LGRooney
Sunday or Monday would be fine for me. Where are you staying so we can make better suggestions on where to meet?
Trinity
I work in DC. I could do Monday.
Bulworth
I can do Monday

Monday is possible for me.

May I humbly suggest the Masonic Lost Symbol Segway Tour and some herbal refreshments?
PeakVT
If only I could still recommend the meetup be held at Bardo Rodeo.

Cool. Monday would be fun. At least there will be something worthwhile happening in Feb., which is otherwise the worst month of the year. The only good thing aabout it, really, is that it’s shorter than the other months, so you get through it faster.
dedc79
Monday is good, something easily metro accessible even better.

@Doug Galt: The Carpool is the most convenient for you. Guarapo and Ireland’s Four Courts at Courthouse Metro (only a few doors apart) were both fun but noisy.
MikeJ
@PeakVT: If only. I used to go there all the time.
Cermet
The Irish Pub on King’s street in Old Town is a great, and fairly inexpensive place. Good Irish food.

But what if everyone here is a virtual person?

@Face:
And people were putting down that gun fetish article Doug pointed out yesterday.
ETA: From the comments: “Every gun is sacred.”
LGRooney
@Doug Galt: OK. That’s 2 miles up the road from my area (the Arlington slums near Bailey’s Crossroads) but not a place I go for food. Last time Bailey’s was recommended. Lots of chain options. Carpool does decent diner and is just two blocks from the hotel.
LGRooney
@Cermet: Good Irish food?
eemom
Yay! No inauguration, no football, and nothing I can eff up. I’ll be there.
ETA: Just do it near a Metro plz. I don’t drink and drive, and I don’t not drink. thx.
schrodinger's cat
@Belafon (formerly anonevent): Are you saying that we are all DougJ?

Monday :-)

I think carpool sounds like the best option but I will let fellow Virginians opine since they know better.

If you want to actually have it in DC there’s a place called Meridian Pint in Columbia Heights that has good food and great beer. Why does a liberal like you always stay in VA? MD and DC both have hotels that would appreciate your business, plus progressive politics. Just sayin’.
eemom
Now I have Dylan braying in my ears, also too.
Uncle Cosmo
@Xantar: Moi aussi, pretty much any time. Monday I could take the MARC train down, Sunday I’d hafta drive to an outlying Metro station. (Do pick a venue near the Metro though–driving in DC sux even on wkends.)
Oh, & unpopular as the sentiment might be on this site–GO RAVENS!

Wherever you end up, leave a tip. Apparently RW Jaysus doesn’t approve of the practice. An Applebee’s diner refused to leave a tip for religious reasons. The waitress who exposed it was fired because the customer complained.
Don
Carpool is a bit of a meat market but it’s a nice large area, has pool tables, and a nice beer selection. I’m not sure if I can make it anywhere, anytime, because of the new sprog. But I’ll try.
ET
Whichever is fine.

Dagnab. It would be worth a visit to the inlaws (I love ’em BTW) to attend a BJ meetup. Maybe when it’s not winter.
Since this is an open thread, let me roll on the ground in animal joy… I had to prep our storage unit for the Men With A Truck who are coming tomorrow… trying to get rid of this one!
Darling Husband had apparently just emptied his dresser drawers into boxes, back in the day. I got SEVENTEEN DOLLARS from the coin thingie at the supermarket and put it on an Amazon gift card.
I haz been rewarded for a mostly thankless task… though the library sale is getting four boxes of books and one box of videotapes!
Tone in DC
@PeakVT:
Long gone, but not forgotten. The Graceland Imperial Stout was very good.
The construction over there on Wilson Boulevard is a bit much, these days. Makes it hard to get through there.
CorbinDallasMultipass
Monday the 11th would be great.
Elizabelle
Bailey’s at Ballston (Virginia) is so seriously not special.
Anyone up for the Dubliner pub, Union Station stop? (Red line Metro)
Way more fabulous and atmospheric. Plus, cars can park at Union Station parking garage. (One dollar for first two hours, with validation from machine on way back out to garage.)
For that matter, Union Station itself has a bunch of restaurant/bars that put Bailey’s to shame.
My two cents.
(FWIW, Morning Joe broadcast from the Dubliner during Inauguration Week. How fun would it be to meet each other wearing a button with Joe’s mug and the banned sign?)
Elizabelle
I think anywhere will be happy to see us on a Monday night in February.
Trinity
@Uncle Cosmo: Go Ravens!
CorbinDallasMultipass
I feel like a bar near faragut west/faragut north would be easily commutable from arlington and would allow more people from Maryland and DC to join.
schrodinger's cat
You guys should go to Cleveland Park and say hi to David Brooks.
LGRooney
@CorbinDallasMultipass: Wholeheartedly agree but then I’m out. Since my wife’s first language is not English, she uses that as an excuse for my having to sit down with our son for his homework. Not that I mind as I only have a few years left to enjoy his wanting to spend time with me.
John Dillinger
@Elizabelle: Not only that, some places may have private rooms we can use. Ri-Ra on Wilson advertises that they do. Cole may want to us cordoned off from regular folk, particularly if Doug J is there.
John Dillinger
@CorbinDallasMultipass: I work in the same complex as the JW Marriott (you know, where they held the Romney wake last week) at Metro Center, and they have a decent happy hour. I could go down early and see if I could set aside a bunch of tables if I knew how many were planning on coming.
CorbinDallasMultipass
@John Dillinger: I’m not an authority on organizing this, I was just trying to point out the downsides of an Arlington location. That said, I think that suggestion is a good one.
Last time there was talk of a meetup I jokingly suggested outside of Reason’s offices near Dupont. It’s the second creepiest place in Dupont besides the Scientology building.
John Dillinger
@CorbinDallasMultipass: Union Pub across from Heritage (Union Station area) also has rooms, as does the Irish Times, right next to the Dubliner.
CorbinDallasMultipass
@Elizabelle: I think this is not a bad idea either, though the downside is its only redline.

Rustico Ballston would be a winner. Good beers and bar food.
schrodinger's cat
Deleted, wrong thread.
Valdivia
I am so totally on the let’s meet in the District bandwagon. Lots of good places to meet that are near metro stops. I would prefer blur or orange than red line but that’s just me sticking to my ‘hood lines. Happy to go anywhere.
Someone mentioned Faragut. Good latino place near there with good happy hour deals if I remember correctly.
What Have The Romans Ever Done for Us? (formerly MarkJ)
@schrodinger’s cat: St. Arnold’s mussel bar has good mussels and Belgian beer, and it’s right in Cleveland Park. Also, Nanny O’Brians, which is kind of divey despite being in a posh neighborhood. I used to live there until Brooks moved in and ruined the neighborhood. If he moves to Takoma Park (where I now reside) we’ll burn him in effigy on his own front lawn.
CorbinDallasMultipass
@Valdivia: Can you remember the name of the latino place? Perhaps it was http://www.bravobravodc.com/ (WARNING AUTO MUSIC) ?
Since I’m pimping Farragut as a good compromise spot, I’d like to pin some locations.
http://www.recessionsdc.com/
http://www.blackroosterpub.com/
http://www.mackeyspub.com/
I mean, if one of those doesn’t work the other two would probably be fine and they’re all on the same street/location.
EconWatcher
About a 50-50 chance I could make it on the 11th–hope so. It would be good to meet Juicers in person.
evap
Are you visiting NSF, Doug? I’ll be there on the 8th, leaving on the 10th. I’ve booked a tour of the Capital on the 9th, I can’t wait!
eemom
Jeez, y’all are all over the map. Doug has his work cut out for him.
All good though, long as it’s near a Metro.
lol
Farragut!
Completely on board with Mackey’s. On a Monday, we won’t have any issues with taking over an area of the place.
Redshift
I should be able to make it either day, unless I get this job I’m interviewing for on Monday and we go out of town to celebrate. Even so, I’d likely be around on Monday. Since I’m in Virginia, Virginia would be fine with me. I don’t think any of my favorite places are Metro-accessible, though there’s a shuttle from the King St. Metro that goes by Murphy’s in Alexandria.
My brother still lives in Arlington (we grew up there); I’d ask him for recommendations, but I can never stand any of the places he likes, so I’ll spare you.

I have been here on a bunch of dates and the food and drinks were good. There is a better latino place but that’s in the Penn Quarter.
ericblair
I think I’ll be able to do the 11th. I’m not going to add to the current analysis paralysis: just tell me where to show up.
guachi
I work at the NSA so traffic will be the biggest problem for me if we meet in the evening anywhere in Virginia. But otherwise I’m game!
Collin
Thanks for the Dylan lyric. It led me on a Google search of the “meaning” of the lyrics of “Just Like a Woman” and the Wiki entry for Edie Sedgewick. Learn something every day (or not).
Andrewtna
Wow I actually live right across the street from your hotel. Carpool is ok but I like the Rustico suggestion better. I work in DC so anywhere will work for me though. My apologies to everyone I bailed on when the last meetup was taking place around here. I’ll make it to this one.
JR
For other DC-area BJers: I’m going to be appearing in a production of Caryl Churchill’s “Cloud 9” just before Doug’s arrival. We run Feb 6-9. Tickets available here: http://www.goldstar.com/events/washington-dc/cloud-9
Free wine and beer on opening night. Oh, and I play a four year-old girl.
Elizabelle
@JR:
I will try to see your play. Have heard it’s a good one. Not sure of my schedule yet, but opening night could be fun.
Break a leg.
