Last night after watching Lincoln I was not ready for bed, so perused the Netflix offerings, and watched what may be the greatest movie ever made. If you have not seen it and have Netflix, drop everything you are doing and watch the film God Bless America
. It very seriously is a highlight reel of all my murder fantasies and quite possibly the best social commentary since Bob Roberts
.
Time for the Pens.
radon
Bobcat is an American treasure.
Todd
Love that movie. Both so wrong and so right at the same time.
raven
Yea, I’ll turn off the sweet sixteen right away. Maybe if West Virginia doesn’t TOTALLY suck next year there will be a renewed interest in the the greatest sporting event on the planet.
David Koch
Cole,
If you’re interested in more, Bobcat did a HBO special last year that was hilarious.

lamh35
love this highlighted review
So what gives the movie a “liberal political slant”???
raven
Ya’ll checkin out this racist fuckinf asshole from Iowa attacking the Obama girls for going on spring break?
Heirn
I kept watching Netflix to see when it would be available. It was worth the wait. I laughed my self silly.
quannlace
Sorry to sound all trollish and humor-less, but Jesus, Cole. Especially after today’s new releases about the details in Sandy Hook, talking about a movie where they go on a killing spree.
raven
And, while I’m at it, here’s Pat Lang’s latest masterpiece”
MattR
Goldthwait has already set the bar so high with the Citizen Kane of alcholic clown movies.
Bubblegum Tate
@lamh35:
The protagonist targets Teabaggers.
John Cole
@quannlace: oh for fucks sake.
That’s the only response I can muster.
Quicksand
PSST: Nobody was actually killed in that movie. It’s pretend.
Lowkey
@quannlace: we can shed tears and laugh. I don’t mean to be disrespectful. Just that, when you’re dealing with something horrible, it’s good to laugh when you can. Gotta heal somehow.
Just Some Fuckhead
I don’t mean to sound trollish and humor-less but with all the violence in the world, yer just gonna watch hockey like it doesn’t matter?
soonergrunt (mobile)
That movie is funnier than shit.
Lowkey
@John Cole: oh, and John, if you fell in love with God Bless America, you might check out Super. It’s a slightly sillier move in very much the same vein.
Omnes Omnibus
@Just Some Fuckhead: Not enough goons in hockey any more.
Keith G
@raven: Not having , I am getting ready to walk around the corner to a lil pub and watch the Buckeyes work some magic and hopefully advance over Arizona.
raven
@Keith G: I think they’ll pound the rock inside on the Cats big time.
geg6
@Just Some Fuckhead:
Well, fuck yeah. The Pens are up 2- zip. That’s the kind of thing that helps me get through the horror that is life in America.
Catsy
If you’re still considering that whole foster parent thing, you might want to consider that whoever is screening you might have Internet access and know how to use Google. :>
quannlace
@Lowkey:
Yes, I know, I know. And I’m criticizing a movie I’ve never seen and know nothing about.
So fuck me. I just was watching ‘Raising Arizona’ where the funniest part is the part after Hy’s attempt to rob a convenience store and what ensues is an almost ten minute chase segment where everybody’s shooting at everybody else.
maya
@quannlace: Agree. Whenever I see a DVD case that sports someone with a gun – like every fucking Die Hard edition and 44 gazillion other cases – I just pass by. WTF is it with guns on everything? I don’t care if it’s satire or “libril”, if it really was, then they all should be holding kittens.
Yer all gun nuts.
Higgs Boson's Mate
Sorry to sound all trollish and humor-less, but Jesus, your teams all suck and everyone laughs at you behind your backs.
Omnes Omnibus
@Catsy: If they do, they will find the phrase “skull fuck a kitten.” It’s already hopeless.
MattR
@Omnes Omnibus: Is that mitigated at all by his willingness to sacrifice his shoulder to protect his dog?
quannlace
Bobcat Goldthwait’s been on the panel of ‘Wait,Wait, Dont’ Tell Me’ the past few weeks. Can’t help but think ‘Wow, he sounds just like a normal person!”
Omnes Omnibus
@MattR: Weirdly, that never came up when I took classes to qualify as a guardian ad litem all those years ago.
Mr Stagger Lee
I would see it but xfinity, is having watch-a-thon and I am trying to finish Homeland and Spartacus, I should have taken a week off, damn how am I going fit in the basketball.
tony in san diego
so if you watched it on netflix, how come you linked to amazon?
quannlace
I was catching SHO’s ‘Shameless’. Damn, that show does love it’s oral sex.
raven
@quannlace: We are on season 9 of the UK version.
Dave
You need to check out Goldthwait’s other movies:
World’s Greatest Dad
Sleeping Dogs Lie
The summaries of these movies do not do them justice. And these films are really not safe for kids or the faint of heart, but they are hilarious.
jebediah
@raven:
my phone doesn’t like the link, but enough loaded for me to see its Steve King. Fuck that nasty fucker.
eemom
What happened to the basketball? It all just seemed to vanish.
raven
@eemom: There are two games on now and two later. Same tomorrow. No one seems interested at all.
PeakVT
I would have thought that the official movie of BJ would be Blazing Saddles because of its position on, you know, morons.
Corner Stone
@raven: Does Miami have no inside game?
raven
@Corner Stone: After beating us on a really sketchy call Johnson, their biggest inside threat had surgery and isn’t playing.
Baud
@raven:
Jesus, Raven. What did you do? It’s just a game…
Corner Stone
@raven: Just wondering why they are 2 of 13 from 3pt line so far.
Screams no aggression or strength inside.
raven
@Baud: He re-injured his foot and had it scoped.
Corner Stone
Can’t use an elbow to clear a defender.
Corner Stone
Dagger 3 to go up 18!
raven
@Corner Stone: Well, their coach said that he was “speechless” after the Illinois game because the Illini played the best D they had seen all year. I don’t know if the physical nature of the game took a toll or if Marquette is just better than them. Remember this is supposed to be a super team having won both the ACC tourney and regular season. Illinois was a middle of the pack B1G team and gave them everything they could handle. Draw you r own conclusions, maybe they just are not that good. On the other hand we beat Indiana, Ohio State, Gonzaga and Butler.
raven
The OSU-Cats game is much better.
Robert
God Bless America quickly became one of my favorite indie films of all time last year. It is so smart and so disturbing. You can’t just shake it off and it will make you angry. I’ve written a ton about the film in the past few months. Here’s my full review which really goes into the revenge vs. shock value aspect and why the violence had to go as far as it did to sell the satire.
Redshirt
@Mr Stagger Lee: Please, no spoilers, but how is this final season of Spartacus shaping up? I lost cable so I have to wait for the DVD’s.
jebediah
nasketball is just too goddamn squeaky for me. squeak, squeak, squeak.
brad
It’s an amazing polemic of a movie, and I’ve watched it half a dozen times.
But, much as I genuinely love it, it is a bit derivative of the far, far, far, far superior Super. Super is challenging in its occasional eruptions of stark brutality, but it’s such a rich work.
And it has Kevin Bacon.
Mike in NC
Loving this flick so far, and yet I always hated Bobcat.
The Red Pen
Is this better than Shakes the Clown?
Is that possible?
Jay in Oregon
@Redshirt:
Julius Caesar has joined the cast, as an officer under the new bad guy, Crassus. So if you think Spartacus and his crew are going to roll him over, you might want to think again.
This is the final season of Spartacus, so I don’t think it’s a matter of “Who is going to die?” but “Will anyone be left alive?”
YellowJournalism
@The Red Pen: “No” is the answer to both of those questions, although it is a funny and disturbing-in-a-good-way movie. And I think the ultimate message is one that condemns the violence but is screaming for people to quit bein assholes to each other.
Redshirt
@Jay in Oregon: It’s funny, since of course I know what happens to Spartacus, so I guess I can’t be spoiled properly.
I’m more interested if the show is still “balls to the walls” as the previous seasons. Also, and perhaps more importantly, have they kept the sex scenes going?
Jay in Oregon
@Redshirt:
Yeah, I know what happens too.
And yes, both straight and gay sex scenes are still present. The violence is really making use of the slow-mo “bullet-time” effects, moreso than I remember from the previous seasons.
(I still think that Sam Raimi could have blown the minds of Xena fans who were shipping the Xena/Gabrielle thing if they’d gotten Renee O’Connor to play Lucretia’s female companion, Gaia, from season 1 instead of Jaime Murray.)
Redshirt
@Jay in Oregon: Poor Gaia. She was so much fun! What a shock her demise was. This is one of my favorite shows ever, but it’s the character moments that define it, not the broader story. Which we all know about.
They used the slo-mo violence trick quite a bit last season if I recall. Remember the Spartacus versus Gannicus fight at the temple? Half of it was in slo-mo.
Joy in FL
@PeakVT: I LOVE that movie.
