Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Joe Lieberman disappointingly reemerged to remind us that he’s still alive.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

The revolution will be supervised.

They think we are photo bombing their nice little lives.

I did not have this on my fuck 2022 bingo card.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

This really is a full service blog.

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

Following reporting rules is only for the little people, apparently.

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

If you are still in the GOP, you are an extremist.

I wonder if trump will be tried as an adult.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the GOP

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Why Cant Negroes Understand How Awesome the GOP Is?

You right, Rush. Negroes should totally learn how awesome the party that seems to keep insulting us is. So what if you speak to us in a condescending, patronizing, uber-arrogant tone, WE NEED TO LEARN HOW AWESOME YOU ARE FOR US!

Today on #TWiBRadio, I’m left alone to my own devices with the rest of the team off receiving government handouts (i.e. taking a German exam and finalizing a dissertation) I opened up the phone lines and we discussed the Republican outreach plan, the ridiculousness of its execution and what could actually work.

And this morning on #amTWiB:

Looks like Anthony Weiner is considering a comeback. Turns out it was all about easy access:

You know, [Twitter is] like spin the wheel! Find someone to say something to you! And if it wasn’t 2011 and it didn’t exist, it’s not like I would have gone out cruising bars or something like that. It was just something that technology made possible and it became possible for me to do stupid things. I mean, the thing I did, and the damage that I did, not only hadn’t it been done before, but it wasn’t possible to do it before.

DAMN YOU TWITTER FOR EXISTING!!!

Then L.Joy and the crew discuss the treacherous chicks manipulating parents, Ben Carson backed out of Johns Hopkins convocation, and what you should know about Obama’s budget proposal.

I kind of agree with Mr. Weiner, though it was still his fault. At least the advancement in technology that allowed him to do stupid things didn’t kill 20 people at an elementary school.

I’m convinced Republicans don’t actually want black people to vote for them at all. They just want to be seen “trying” to appeal to black people, so their demographics consultants will get off their backs.

Oh, yes. Losing 93% of the black vote and 70% of the Latino vote is hurting us. Yeah, I get it.

Here. Look. I’m eating a taco while listening to Jazz-Disco fusion and shoving a chop stick up my nose. There! Are they happy? How about if I call them stupid from within a historically black college? No?

Fuck it! These people are hopeless. I’m going back to Bob Jones University where we can make rape jokes about queers over cocktails.

The best political points I’ve heard in a long time: 1) it took a generation, but the Faux News bubble these turds inhabit really has made them clueless about, well, anything. 2) being pampered by ‘The Wurlitzer’ has made them helpless when faced with well-informed opposition. (Lucky for them the MSM is neither well-informed, or much of an opposition).

For some reason I clicked the RL link. It wasn’t as bad as I had expected. I was expecting some alternative history tirade about how African-Americans were counter-intuitively realy oppressed by liberal sportswriters who were biased towards the first NFL black quarterbacks. Or maybe some improvised dialects to liven things up.

But, Rush has begun to acknowledge that his side has lost. I think he gave a little obituary for ‘his’ America after Obama own, and waved the white flag on gay marriage.

After awhile if he can’t make enough dough from his radio show, he can go on a nostalgia tour and perform some of his famous tirades. Maybe as an opening act for something more high class, say an O’Reilly Golden Oldies hour.

I think you’re giving the Republicans WAY too much credit when you said “the party that seems to keep insulting” African-Americans – they do it much more blatantly and frequently than just that. It’s not just dog whistles and Willy Horton anymore; it’s out in the open for everyone to see. They actively try to enact laws suppressing the vote; their intellectual avatar (Antonin Scalia) tries to repeal the Voting Rights Act from the bench and suggests that voting rights are some sort of affirmative action. The Governor of Texas had a ranch named “N-word-head;” an Alabama county commissioner speaks of “N-word-rigging” something; their new libertarian star Kentucky Senator wavers on the Civil Rights Act which he thinks discriminates against private businesses and thinks he knows more about the NAACP’s formation than Howard students; their “News” channel shows one guy from the New Black Panther party years ago over and over and over and over and over and over again on a never-ending loop; they speak of “Chicago-style” and “urban” politics; they criticize the First Lady (who historically is/are above politics) with excess venom, they question the lyrics of African-American artists at Presidential press briefings; they portray the President as an ape or the Devil, they question whether he was even born in the U.S. and bring lawsuits in federal court about it – the list goes on and on. And, most importantly, they champion no policy position whatsoever that would even arguably benefit African Americans and haven’t for decades.

Sure they want black people (and Latinos, Asian Americans, etc.) to vote for them, or at least they’re perfectly happy to accept any votes that wind up in their column. They just aren’t willing to change anything about themselves or the policies they advocate in order to appeal to those minorities. Their lack of minority votes is totally the fault of the minorities refusing to recognize how great their policies are.

This reminds me a horrified comment on the Facebook of an evangelist-in-training back in the London riots that said it was “more than immoral… it’s godlessness.”

Needless to say, he’s never reacted to any story of police brutality the same way.

Point being that they tend to see authority as not just good but ultimately righteous and above petty notions of right and wrong. Concurrently, any resistance to said authority is a mortal sin against the order of How Things Ought To Be and, for the more religious, against God himself.

I need to break down and read that Altmeyer book someday, I suspect it would explain much.

@Omnes Omnibus: basically. The plan remains unchanged. Eventually Tunch will be able to do away with the human suit and retire to the comforts of a well stocked galley.

      @jl:
The ultimate problem is that cultural conservatives who come from different cultures are at best allies of convenience. Essentially all political cultural conservatives are really cultural chauvinists. They aren’t just trying to protect their culture, they’re trying to impose it on others. They may sometimes work together to prevent liberals from having their way, but white cultural conservatives whose are trying to defend white supremacy are never going to find reliable allies from non-whites, no matter how culturally conservative.

Is Rush starting to sound a little gravely and old? I’ve not heard that fool speak in some years now. I wonder if there’s any chance he’ll hang ’em up soon and head off to well-deserved oblivion. (Who, after all, quotes Father Coughlin anymore?)

Damn. When I saw that this thread had about five times more comments than the TWIB posts usually get, I figured somebody had successfully trolled the place. But instead it’s just a bunch of people venting more or less reasonably about how racist the GOP is. I want my money back!

@Chris: I’m working my way through a Barbara Tuchman book about the 14th century in France. Two points stand out. The English, who turned burnin and looting the French countryside into the national sport, were horrified at the perfidy of the group of Frenchmen who invades England’s south to…burn and loot.

And of course, the French nobility, who made the abuse, rape and murder of French peasants their life’s vocation, were outraged by the rebellion of the Jacquerie, which consisted of French peasants raping and murdering French noblemen.

I think some Palestinian hippy said something about not doing to other people what you don’t want done to you, but seriously who listens to that guy?

Isn’t this the same thing Republicans are attempting to do with their outreach towards women?

      National speeches assert friendliness

National actions directly attack womens’ rights

just today Virginia passed the bill which will drop all abortion clinics within the entire state. Your 2013 GOP. I mistyped 1013 GOP at first, but that may have been more accurate.

      @Unsympathetic:

Nah, I’d say their minority outreach is another degree away. It’s even more intentionally designed to attack rights AND not so subtly assert unfriendliness, so that they can point to the backlash as evidence of how unreasonable these people are.

Heh indeed (twice) Your internet is in the mail C.O.D. Hope you don’t mind but I’m short on cash at this time.
