Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

We can show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

Trump’s cabinet: like a magic 8 ball that only gives wrong answers.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

Sadly, media malpractice has become standard practice.

The Giant Orange Man Baby is having a bad day.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

The lights are all blinking red.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

Giving up is unforgivable.

You are either for trump or for democracy. Pick one.

It’s a good piece. click on over. but then come back!!

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

There are a lot more evil idiots than evil geniuses.

“I was told there would be no fact checking.”

Dear Washington Post, you are the darkness now.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

It’s all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

NYMag has a list of “Twenty Things Worth Knowing About Toronto’s Crack-Smoking Mayor Rob Ford“.

It is an excellent list, but the phrase ‘naked mopping’ does not appear.

Does anyone here watch Bill Maher’s show? If so, can you verify if Andrew Ross Sorkin, purported journalist, said Obama knew about the IRS problems before the election?

I’ve seen a couple on twitter claim he said it, but would like verification.

Drew Barrymore is horrendous when co-hosting The Essentials.

@Hill Dweller: The report I saw says that Treasury knew, but nothing linking that to Obama. It would surprise me if he did know about it, at the time it would have been an obscure operation of one field office. Hardly worth briefing the President over.

Hollee shit, Cleetus, we got us some formattin’ buttons. Let’s see what she’ll do.

Can somebody remind me why anybody thinks using the Canadian tar sands is a good thing? Does this keep zombie Bin Laden at the ocean floor?

Assumption Park gives residents of this city lovely views of the Ambassador Bridge and the Detroit skyline. Lately they’ve been treated to another sight: a three-story pile of petroleum coke covering an entire city block on the other side of the Detroit River.

Brian Masse, a member of the Canadian Parliament, wants a bilateral agency to investigate the pile accumulating in Detroit.

Detroit’s ever-growing black mountain is the unloved, unwanted and long overlooked byproduct of Canada’s oil sands boom.

And no one knows quite what to do about it, except Koch Carbon, which owns it.

The company is controlled by Charles and David Koch, wealthy industrialists who back a number of conservative and libertarian causes including activist groups that challenge the science behind climate change. The company sells the high-sulfur, high-carbon waste, usually overseas, where it is burned as fuel.

@Yatsuno: I had heard about Treasury being informed, but nothing about the WH, which made me think Ross Sorkin’s claims(if he made them) were baseless.

You have no idea how pleased it makes me to finally hear someone else feels that way about D. Barrymore’s spot on TCM. Thank you, thank you.

Her Valley Girl inflection is particularly noisome.

Alec Baldwin was pretty good, and it was evident he had done his cinephile homework.

@Hill Dweller: I may be remembering wrong, but I think he was posing it as a question with strong implications that Obama may indeed have known before the election.

I might’ve remembered more clearly if the insanity of SE Cupp’s second amendment rant had not blocked out the rest of the episode. Favorite part: when she went on about how he’s been a gun owner for ten years, which makes her an expert on the issue versus advocates for gun control, like the man sitting next to her, Michael Moore. (I thought he was going to choke her at one point.)

And in typical fashion, Bill Maher went on about the unfairness o the IRS targeting the Tea Party without mentioning that they weren’t targeted alone. Moore pointed out that liberals and liberal groups have been targeted for years.

Maher also got smacked down by both the audience and his guests for trying to question Prince Harry’s paternity TMZ-style.

@Hill Dweller: Departing IRS Commissioner Miller said today that he informed a couple of people at Treasury he was looking into the allegations July 2012. This was in the context of a number of internal audits he was having done. He did not inform them of any conclusions until well after the election.

So we’re still miles away from “Obama drank GOP’s milkshake.”

    Hill Dweller

    May 18, 2013 at 2:14 am

@YellowJournalism: I can’t stand Maher. He knows virtually nothing about the topics they agree to discuss, and is completely clueless on any tangential subjects. For that reason alone I haven’t watched his show but a couple if times in the last few years.

The acting IRS Commissioner said today during the hearing they didn’t target the Tea Party. I think he said the number of Tea Party groups given extra scrutiny was just 30(out of 300 total).

Ross Sorkin fancies himself a real reporter. If he was making baseless accusations, I hope someone smacks him down(rhetorically).

@YellowJournalism: Maher and a few other people need to look at this recent picture of Harry:

    democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1102&pid=9731

He’s bending forward, listening to some kids, so the camera angle is much different than we’re used to seeing. Prince Charles just leaps out of his face at this angle.

Too late for Cole’s thread because I was busy watching James Caan & Tuesday Weld in Thief. A heist movie where the heist isn’t the main thing. I think I’ve mentioned that capers are my favorite movies, with heists a close second. This one was fun. Settling in to Our Man in Havana now.

@Hill Dweller: His stand up is pretty good and his New Rules are sometimes fantastic, but I agree with you regarding the rest of the show. At this point, I pretty much watch the intro monologue and the ending New Rules segment and just fast forward through all the idiocy that usually pervades the interviews and panel discussion, stopping occassionally with the hope that I might hear a worthwhile argument. The silver lining is that now it only takes 15-20 minutes to watch the show.

@The prophet Nostradumbass: Well, it was mostly the football pratfall and the trapped on the zipwire incident — that and the hair color that really fused that connection. The personality + hair is more Trumpish, although with extra personal yuck.

Eta: just thought of this: a certain lack of judgement might also be shared.

Open thread? Okay, um, I guess I’ll stir up a storm gently mention that when I visited this site from my iPad, the new mobile theme did load (wow. different.), but I wasn’t able to navigate to any posts.

It was as though any hyperlinkable navigation element had lost its linkie mojo*. All I could do was scroll up and down to read the blog post titles and the 10-20 word intros for each post.

The, um, menu thing (a popover navigation element that appears from upper left side) did appear, yes (alas, I could not find a way to make it disappear, other than reloading the site, ouch), but the menu thing’s list of recent blog posts weren’t clickable tappable, either.

I’d offer to take screenshots and email them and stuff, if there’s more troubleshooting to be done, but I’ll be preoccupied by attending my niece’s college graduation over the next coupla days. Which means that the only way I’ll read this site if I must duck out from festivities to feed my internets habit on Balloon Juice and other site habits during that time is via iPad, which, if no-linkie-mojo continues, means I won’t be reading it at all.

    * Go ahead. Read that sentence sounding like Austin Powers. I dare you.
