Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

It’s all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

If you can’t control your emotions, someone else will.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

This really is a full service blog.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

Those who are easily outraged are easily manipulated.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

At some point, the ability to learn is a factor of character, not IQ.

Every one of the “Roberts Six” lied to get on the court.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

“Perhaps I should have considered other options.” (head-desk)

You passed on an opportunity to be offended? What are you even doing here?

Donald Trump found guilty as fuck – May 30, 2024!

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

Radicalized white males who support Trump are pitching a tent in the abyss.

How any woman could possibly vote for this smug smarmy piece of misogynistic crap is beyond understanding.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Second rate reporter says what?

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

“woke” is the new caravan.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

Petty moves from a petty man.

I’ve thought Psych has sucked for the most part his season, but the “Office Space” episode where Gus mangles his boss’s murder scene has had me in tears. I got hysterical during the Gus initial description, and have been giddy since. Being this cheesy and still pulling it off is kind of a feat.

Cole, I think you might be the target audience for the “Ironside” relaunch.

    Yikes.

    Absolutely awesome series.

“Psych” has not been that good at all this year. I’m tired of the Jules/Sean romance drama. Sean as an eternal love-sick, kicked puppy dog is incredibly boring.

If I wanted to watch a c-list romcom, I’d rent a Katherine Heigl movie.

@dewzke: It’s a bit of a trick question. The word is ‘joy’. But it’s not so simple. There are 3 greek terms used: χαρά – which basically means to rejoice. There’s εὐφροσύνη which is taken to mean joy or happiness, and then there’s ἀγαλλίασις, which is generally taken to be euphoria. The former two tend to be used in secular settings, where the latter is in relation to worship. It’s the 2nd term which is translated as ‘joy’ which appears only twice and is used primarily for general conditions of joy – such as when Cole tells us he’s happy with his pets watching the Steelers. The first term is usually taken as an expression to news – so, learning that a loved one wasn’t killed in the tornado would elicit happiness in this way. I believe this is relatively common – some small event happened (someone was healed) and people rejoiced. That kind of thing. The last one is for big divine intervention kinds of stuff – where people are overwhelmed with happiness. Parting of seas level stuff.

We were doing some translation of the NT and it was an opportunity to compare the usage of terms. I think I got that laid out correctly based on my review of Strong’s. It’s been a while.

just happy that there will be a reincarnation of a new Whose line is it anyway? coming this summer to the CW. Yes Stiles, Mochrie and Brady all look a bit more distinguished, but it’s hard to find a group of more consistently funny people on TV anywhere.

@dewzke: It is interesting. It’s not too surprising because the early christians didn’t call themselves as such. That was a name that basically the Romans came up for them some time later – something of a pejorative, in fact. Kind of like ‘Moonie’. So within their own documents it’s not too surprising to see it infrequently mentioned.

Apropos of nothing, here’s Penn Jillette on Donald Trump:

I wasn’t even going to say anything about Trump’s hair. I live in a glass house. I’ve always had ugly, out-of-style hair. Trump’s hair is a lot better than mine—but as I sat there for hours half listening to Donald carry on, it struck me exactly what his hair looked like. It looks like cotton candy made of piss.

Given that what we think of as the bible today was compiled in the 17th Century by a politically motivated hierarchy mostly from 15th & 16th Century edits of scraps of documents known to have been written no earlier that a couple of hundred years after the deaths of the purported authors and their subject I wouldn’t be surprised.

Besides, the followers of the Christ would not have called themselves “Christians” as they were Jews right up until a smart marketing guy sold his version to the Greeks.

That said, having read the thing more than once I didn’t get that one right.

Haven’t you seen “Demetrius and the Gladiators”? Jay Robinson as the emperor Nero says “Christians” with a dripping contempt that I don’t think even Balloon Juice denizens could summon. I bet it’s on YouTube.

ETA: I mean Caligula. Duh. The whole film is on YouTube, but I was hoping there’d be a clip just with him saying “Chris-tee-ahns.”

Yeah, I loved Rectify. It’s been picked up for another season.

Slow pace; evocative; interesting (and reserved) characters.

Wonderful cinematography. Real sense of place and time. With enough creepiness and foreboding to stay tuned.
