So in a development that stunned NO ONE, the members panel found MAJ Nidal Hassan guilty on all 13 charges and specifications of premeditated murder and 32 charges and specifications of attempted premeditated murder. MAJ Hassan did not put on a defense case. Nor did he question any of the government’s witnesses. During his opening statement he said “I am the shooter.” Also, SSG Robert Bales, having plead guilty to multiple counts of premeditated murder and other charges, thereby avoiding the death penalty, was today sentenced to life without parole for the murders of 16 Afghan civilians last year.

Seeing The World’s End tonight, and maybe going to the art museum Saturday.
@celticdragonchick Thanks for the recommendation. I may see that next week.

@celticdragonchick:
It didn’t exactly blow me away, but I liked how pointed it felt. The whole premise of the 1% actually “going Galt” at last in the grandest way imaginable (but still expecting the 99% to do all the actual labor, of course). The douchebag supervisor telling the protagonist that he doesn’t realize how lucky he is to have a job in a sweatshop at all. The obvious references to illegal immigration and lack of health care. Definitely a movie for our time.
MattR
Saw Kick Ass 2 last weekend. I found it very meh. Initially thought it was because I never read the comic, but my friend who saw it with me was a fan of the comic and had the same meh feeling about the movie. Sounds like we should have gone to see Elysium instead.

This afternoon: office picnic – the higher-ups are supplying the meat and alcohol, but it’s in foggy, windy SF, so we’ll burn off the calories shivering.
Saturday: schlep the offspring to violin lessons, then 112 loads of laundry.
Sunday: our 17th wedding anniversary, which we will celebrate by taking the offspring and several other 10-year-old boys to a Nerf Dart shooting gallery and then feeding them pizza and cake. We’re so fucking romantic. Also, offspring’s actual birthday was 3 months ago, but we suck at basic parenting.

@gbear: Great to hear from you! The early Kinks material is so good that the later Arista stuff might seem to suffer in comparison, and sometimes it does. I saw a photo in a music magazine from the mid/late seventies where the Kinks were on tour in America and wearing all this SoCal western drag. They looked like the Eagles, if the Eagles were from North London. Dedicated followers of fashion indeed. Keep listening. MAJ Hassan did not put on a defense case. Nor did he question any of the government’s witnesses. During his opening statement he said “I am the shooter.”
I am still not sure if the guy is mental or not. If he is, they shouldn’t give the death penalty. If he isn’t, well, if they do give him the death penalty I’m not going to feel bad about it.
Also, SSG Robert Bales, having plead guilty to multiple counts of premeditated murder and other charges, thereby avoiding the death penalty, was today sentenced to life without parole for the murders of 16 Afghan civilians last year.
I would have been OK with life with parole, given that he plainly lost his mind. Before the other day, anyways. So Manning will get out before this guy does, and that’s good.
Proving once again just how batshit insane he is, my junior Senator, Tom Coburn recently said that he considers President Obama a friend, and that he has no idea what if anything the President might have done to warrant impeachment, but some of the rumors on far right websites and blogs are perilously close to impeachment.
After digging into it, and reading the actual papers, my conclusion was that ‘high crimes and misdemeanors’ should be read as ‘high crimes and (low) misdemeanors’ and not ‘high crimes and (high) misdemeanors’. Meaning it was intended that Congress, center of all power in the original conception of the Constitution, could remove a President purely because they just felt like it. That’s why it takes 2/3rds to convict in the Senate – the House is supposed to reflect the shifting tenors of the people and the Senate is supposed to say, ‘Now wait just a damn minute’.
Given that they want to impeach the guy and they aren’t going to succeed (because he hasn’t done anything), I am totally fine with them preferring a bill of impeachment that can be laughed at heartily. It’ll keep them preoccupied. (Of course, Coburn wants to stay right with the base but not blow up the R’s so he’s actually trying to edge away from the idea.)
Or I’m doing laundry. Probably laundry. What plans do you all have?

@raven: That’s what happens. Part of her sentence is reduction to E-1, total forfeiture of all pays and allowances* and Dishonorable Discharge. The CA must order these to be executed for them to take effect.
So she will be reduced to PVT (E-1), and forfeit all of her pay and allowances going forward.** Upon completion of the sentence of confinement, she will be discharged from the Army with a service characterization of Dishonorable.
*She gets to keep all the money she was paid so far, including the pay and allowances she accrued while in pre-trial confinement when she was not allowed to purchase anything. However, she also has a $100,000 fine levied against her for violating the civil law regarding espionage. Whatever money she has will have to be surrendered to pay that fine.
**It is not unusual for Convening Authorities to waive all or a portion of the forfeitures, particularly if the accused has dependents.

@Amir Khalid: It is EXTREMELY unlikely that he will ever be executed, even if he gets the death penalty. Remember that once the Convening Authority approves his sentence (and may commute it to life without parole if it is the death penalty) it will automatically be docketed with the Army Court of Criminal Appeals. That court will probably reverse any death penalty due to MAJ Hassan not receiving effective assistance of counsel.
So far, not one single military capital sentence since the death penalty was reinstated in 1984 has been carried out. Several of the capital convictions have either been overturned in their entirety or have been reduced to life without parole. Just 10 days ago, The Air Force Court of Criminal Appeals reversed the death penalty for SrA. Andrew Witt for ineffective assistance of counsel.

Thinking I better go see “Cutie and The Boxer” – people keep telling me it’s 1. terrific and 2. not unlike me and Mr. BarbCat, except I’m surely no cutie.
Has anyone seen it?

I would welcome articles of impeachment. In fact, I think they should be voted up just a couple days before the GOP defunds the government and defaults on our debts.
Peak wingnut! I want it! We need it!

@JCT: If I’m parsing this right, it sounds like you got very bad news today. If so, I’m sad to hear it and wish you strength and hope and the very best of luck. I’ll keep you in my thoughts. (I pretty much just lurk here, but I always appreciate your comments — I’m envious that you got to hang out with Jim Morrison!)

@minachica: Ah – kind thoughts appreciated . Posted that sitting on the plane trying to parse all of this myself. The remission was much shorter than we anticipated . At least his docs are spectacular- he wouldn’t have made it this long without their efforts. We’ll keep pushing on, not looking forward to calling the kids tonight.
Hah – I have a great pic of my folks with Jim sitting on my desk at work, get some great double-takes!

He may have pled guilty to avoid the death penalty but life w/out parole is barbaric. After the number of tours he did, it ought to have been, deminished capacity or mental disease.
The Major in Texas, same thing.
When we send people to war these days not much is taken into account regarding the people when they come home. They were trained to kill, they did it, got paid for it, and then we are surprised they do it again at home or they do it in a manner not consistent with armed forces rules and regs.
If countries can’t deal with the mental health issues of their armed forces, they ought not to go to war, unless they themselves are being invaded. Its been a waste of money, time, the enviornment, and people.

Just came back from seeing The World’s End. Best sf movie of the year. Possibly better than Shaun of the Dead.
