Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

Since we are repeating ourselves, let me just say fuck that.

They don’t have outfits that big. nor codpieces that small.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Today’s gop: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

Let me file that under fuck it.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

People are weird.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

Tide comes in. Tide goes out. You can’t explain that.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

So I got a cortisone shot in both hips. No big deal, had things like this before. Yet somehow I feel like a Mack truck ran me over. Tonight is pizza and lassitude.

    Great minds think alike AL.

I posted a link to Cher’s first song from her new album that was release 3month ago in one of the threads from yesterday.

I’ma post it and say again. I’m beginning to believe what they said about Cher and cockroaches surviving the nuclear apocalypse.

Da diva looks fan-freakin-tastic at almost 70! Even with the obvious plastic surgery, she looks good and on the surface happy and healthy.

Massive heaps of naan and rice and meats and saag followed by some Blind Pig and Pliny after 3&1/2 weeks on the road. And then some more naan.

Then a month of BB I’ve missed.

Lordy, my friend Bryan’s head will explode. He actually went to one of Cher’s “fairwell” tours as a newly out lil gay boy (as he likes to tell it) in Jackson, Mississippi…lol.

The adult Bryan actually paid top dollar to go to the last “farewell” tour Cher had and he LOVE Gaga.

It’s basically the first sign of the “gay apocalypse” and he says we should “act accordingly”…lol. I love that boy

Swedish meatballs over gluten free pasta. This is some really good comfort food. I haven’t had pasta, even gluten free, in months. I may eat it plain even after my son polishes off the meatballs.

I went to the Greenway Carousel today on my lunch hour. It was ground zero for happy smiles on a gorgeous late summer day. Check out the critters – peregrine falcon (my favorite), cod, lobster, butterflies, whale, rabbit, fox, etc. It’s beyond beautiful. Thanks Tiffany’s!

Wait, Stevie Wonder won an Oscar for “”I Just Called to Say I Love You”! And it was an original song from that Gene Wilder movie “The Woman In Red”!!! Wow that was a strong year for Original Song too.

“I Just Called to Say I Love You” — The Woman in Red • Music and lyrics: Stevie Wonder
“Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)” — Against All Odds • Music and lyrics: Phil Collins
“Footloose” — Footloose • Music and lyrics: Kenny Loggins and Dean Pitchford
“Let’s Hear It for the Boy” — Footloose • Music and lyrics: Tom Snow and Dean Pitchford
“Ghostbusters” — Ghostbusters • Music and lyrics: Ray Parker Jr.

WTF! Love Stevie, love the song, but I never knew it won an Oscar. I Just Called To Say I Love You

As I told lamh36, I just sat down to watch the third episode of the “new” Luther, although I got sidetracked into a Balloon Juice check-in when I paused the show for a few minutes. Intense opening sequence that I wasn’t prepared for.

Dinner was the second half of the excellent Cuban sandwich I got for lunch at Banana Café in the District today. Took bro’ man in my car to get a load of big houseplants at a really jungle-y place off New York Avenue—basically the lot and building of a decommissioned gas station.

Beautiful weather today, and I’m actually thinking about closing the windows tonight—at least the bedroom one—because it has gotten downright cool outside. Currently 60° in NoVa, and it’s supposed to go down to 53° overnight. Me likey! The high was only 77° today. Supposed to be about the same tomorrow.

@lamh36: I’m always amused by my first encounter with the theme from “Ghostbusters”. Local radio station had a feature called “Smash or Trash” where callers rated new music. “Ghostbusters” was resoundngly “trashed”, which meant the station promised not to play it again. Then the movie opened like the next week, and of course the song was heard hourly from that point on.

    @Mnemosyne (iPhone):

I know what you mean. I think Chevalier was one of those actors who sort of got devoured by his own image, and by the ’50s he had been distilled down to “cheerful French lecher,” and all you could hear when he opened his mouth was “Thank Heaven for leetle girls.” It’s always interesting to see those actors in early films where they had the strong screen presence but hadn’t yet been submerged completely into it, and into predictable cliché roles. Joan Crawford comes to mind in the same way.

And I had a similar reaction to Charles Boyer a few days ago. It was History Is Made at Night (1937), with Jean Arthur. Complete mess of a movie, but there is a early scene at night in which Boyer gets physical with a bad dude, and there’s this sudden close-up of Boyer’s face that hit me: “Boyer’s a bad-ass! Who knew?!” And not in his usual (later) weasely “poisoning his wife” way, but straight-up “I’ll kick your ass.” It was kind of amazing. And then of course the movie fell off a cliff. But that was very surprising.

Maybe it’s French actors. No French actor could be a bad-ass in American eyes until Jean Reno. Maybe Alain Delon, but he was a little suspect.

I’ve got Illicit waiting for me on the DVR. TCM had one of their pre-Code afternoons last week (which somehow always feel like a nooner at a cheap motel), and that was the only one I hadn’t seen. Don’t know how I’ve missed it this long. I loves me some early Barbara Stanwyck.
