Speaking of reader recommendations, was it one of you guys who linked to Songza? So far I’m enjoying its ‘curated’ channels more than I have previous excursions into Pandora/Songify/whatever, even though it does seem to crash my crappy desktop now and then…

I believe that was me after I read it in Slate!. Which was kind of a surprise, since they’re mostly useless that way. (Now if I was an upper-middle class thirty-something in/from NYC who mostly purchased Apple products…)

No problems Win7/Chrome 29. How crappy is your desktop?

This 6 CD set has been my jam this summer. Picked it up for c. 50 bones. Totally worth it if you are a Kinks fan.

Glad the Wolverines pulled out the win. I just wish the Dodgers had won earlier in the day.
I have at least another 8 hours to go tomorrow at the print shop. I REALLY don’t want to go after the 12 today, but having no car dictates that I go in. Bleh.

Waaat? Obama is blithering? Ive never heard him blither before. He sounds like Shrub.

What the hell is going on? This is the most articulate guy, the most rational and level-headed guy, we’ve had in office in my lifetime, and he sounds like his brain has become a fucking shambles.
Hmm, he sounds EXACTLY like Shrub, all this bullshit about sending messages and the like. Is this some brain-rotting diplomacy-speak I’ve never heard of, that afflicts Presidents?

I’ve had DC’s own Wale’s Lotus Flower Bomb as my earworm lately. He gets a lot of help from Miguel on it but it’s a good one even if you don’t like rap. and he only drops one N bomb so beware.

I like the video more than I like the song, but it sure looks like a fun apocalypse.

Quick update–My daughter was admitted to the hospital this evening after taking a bad turn. She’s stable and resting. We still don’t know what’s wrong. My wife is with her. I got home a few minutes ago. I’m going to try to get some sleep and get back there first thing in the morning.

Belafon
@fuckwit:
Actually, I think this is annoying. Does Pierce want the imperial presidency, or would he like it curtailed? This really falls as “damned if you do/damned if you don’t” and Pierce should not be pushing that. Some things are tough sells, and since no one I know of can actually predict the future, you go with what you have and how you think the world will act.
FDR and Wilson both thought that the wars in Europe were worth fighting in, but would not do any direct involvement without approval.
The prophet Nostradumbass
@Belafon: He sounds like he wants to be on both sides at the same time, so he can be right no matter the outcome.

@Soonergrunt: So sorry to hear that. I’ve spent so many months in hospital with my son; I know how desperately hard it can be. Sending you my best wishes.
The prophet Nostradumbass
I think the people who create the point spreads for Stanford/San Jose State games have never actually watched one of the games, ever.
Lady Bug
@Belafon:
Good point. Obama is in a damned if you do, damned if you don’t position on Syria. Really it seems that no matter what he does/did in this situation, he’s fucked, while Russia who is vetoing even bland statements condemning violence in Syria, doesn’t pay any price for their behavior in the international community.
There is no doubt in my mind at least, that if Obama wasn’t pushing for military action against the regime, the villagers and congress critters would be clamoring at Obama to punish Assad, calling him an appeaser, and breaking every Goodwin Law known to man and calling Obama as a coward who refused to stand up to human rights atrocities.

Oh, sure, thanks a fuckload, Cougars. WSU wins and UCLA “loses” (Kiffin getting fired).

It’s funny, football is the only sport where I can actually stand Stanford. I think it comes from years of going to the games when I was a kid, and my alma mater not having had a football team for 20 years. Any other sport, I want to see them lose, and badly.
piratedan
congrats Yutsy, they even did it at SC…. guess that means the South will be wide open this year
The Dangerman
I actually feel slightly (and I do mean slightly here) for SC; I watched the game (my Nephew has a connection to WSU sports) and USC doesn’t have a QB. How a major conference D1 team doesn’t have at least 1 capable QB is stunning. It will be a lonnnnnnnnnnnng season for them.
BillinGlendaleCA
@The Dangerman: I’m never unhappy to see U$C lose, ever. I’m sure they’ll hire another turkey.
Positive thoughts to Soonergrunt and Soonerdaughter.
Yatsuno
@The Dangerman: There was some $UC homer trying to say that switching up the QBs at halftime was gonna open up the air game. Yeah, that happened.
BillinGlendaleCA
@The Dangerman: They might be able to develop a QB, but Hello Kiffin won’t choose one.
The prophet Nostradumbass
@BillinGlendaleCA: when they’re playing Notre Dame, I wish they could both lose, but I know that’s not possible.
piratedan
@BillinGlendaleCA: yup, USC has QB’s but then again, they’ve always had their choice of selecting from the top talent nationally, and if Kiffin turns out to be a fraud when it comes to coaching, evaluating talent (or even following the rules),then I’ll shed nary a tear.
Yatsuno
@The prophet Nostradumbass: That is always a case where one roots for injuries. Or the meteor.
For bnut cuz I’m about that happy right now.
@BillinGlendaleCA: Kicking game needs major work. Also. Too.

@Soonergrunt:
I’m so sorry, guy. Hope she get’s better quickly.
Comrade Nimrod Humperdink
@Yatsuno: Beating U$C is always a big deal, but since half the kids who play Pac 12 ball come from Southern California, it can’t hurt recruiting. I’m stoked. I haven’t seen a WSU defense carry the team to a win in about a decade. The secondary is still dicey (and probably won’t be tested hard until Stanford) but the front seven is really good, and I like the freshman Brown at corner. All we need now is a quarterback.
Comrade Nimrod Humperdink
@piratedan: That’s the only downside to winning: the increased possibility of Kiffin getting fired. I’m happy to let him stay there as long as Haden wants to keep him.
piratedan
@Comrade Nimrod Humperdink: he’s always struck me as one of those guys that ha been blessed by taking advantage of better folks around him (or perhaps that’s his talent). Was extremely happy when AZ picked up Rodriguez because I hope like hell we can watch them torch the Trojans into cinders. Then leave the field playing their damn fight song and leave a pile of horse shit on midfield.
Yatsuno
@Comrade Nimrod Humperdink: Halliday has spooky feet. That is usually fixed by hard work and experience, but he also wasn’t as well protected tonight as he should have been. Oh well, I’ll take it especially after getting close with Auburn too. It might just be a decent year.
SiubhanDuinne
@Soonergrunt: White light and healing thoughts coming to you, your wife and daughter.
Comrade Nimrod Humperdink
@Yatsuno: Spooky feet in his case is a combo of thinking too much of his arm and risking permanent paralysis everytime he’s dropped back to pass the last three years with our fat matador offensive line. The good news is, that might be the best pass rush we deal with all year. The bad news is that Stanford and Oregon are still to come.
Yatsuno
@Comrade Nimrod Humperdink: I don’t have expectations to win out, especially since the Fighting Fashion Atrocities pay damn good money for their players. If they do well but come up short like they did at Auburn I’m happy. I’ll be much more pleased should they sneak up on a few teams while they’re not looking as well, since Wazzu always gets underestimated.

You can preorder the album that song is from on iTunes. Or, if you’re appropriately enterprising, you can download it at any number of pirating sites. It’s not as good as ArchAndroid, but it’s surprisingly varied – ranging from 70’s soul, to funk, to 90’s R&B and further – and as with her previous work, it’s deeply rooted in a love for old school and new school black music forms. Most understated about her talents are the contributions her concept albums make to Afrofuturism. She’s not just a musician, she’s one of the few female artists actively contributing to a branch of science fiction. It’s a theme and aesthetic you can see her playing with in this far more musically representative and interesting track (which could easily be the feminist anthem of the decade):
Janelle Monáe – Q.U.E.E.N. feat. Erykah Badu

Question: My girlfriend farts in bed. She denies it and blames me, and objects when I hold her head under the covers to teach her a lesson. Do I have to take further military action?
Baud
@Soonergrunt:
Man, that sucks. Hope you all get a speedy answer and even speedier recovery.
Robert
Janelle Monae is one of those musicians that just seems to elude mainstream critical and commercial success. The awards shows and the general population alike just aren’t embracing her like other artists when everything she’s doing is so on trend without being derivative or banal. She is the real deal and something’s going to click some day. I’m predicting she’s going to get that one inescapable crossover hit like MIA or Jill Scott and be set for life.
