Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

Americans barely caring about Afghanistan is so last month.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

The revolution will be supervised.

Infrastructure week. at last.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

If you are still in the GOP, you are an extremist.

No one could have predicted…

This blog will pay for itself.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

    We should be rooting for Costa Rica, because that’s where we’re all going to retire if the middle class doesn’t reverse its slide.

    @Morzer: I was stunned the other day Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein said the wealth needed to be spread around. Look I am a middle to upper middle class guy. I sell web sites, so clearly not a lot of lower income people are calling me.

    But if I owned a coffee shop, used book store, heck a McDonalds I’d want more people to have more money, SO THEY COULD SPEND IT AT MY BUSINESS. It is just ECON 101.

    Much as I love the dynamic goal monster that is Luis Suarez when he’s wearing Liverpool red, I really hope he doesn’t get off the bench at this World Cup. Without him Uruguay look decidedly one dimensional and Costa Rica haven’t particularly impressed.

    Halftime. I got a question – there is a hawk near work and when I am on a cig break I see all these little birds (robins and crows) try to jump on his wings when he is in flight. He is three times the size of these birds but he just shrugs them off. What is that about?

    Well, so far Uruguay have looked like a decent, but relatively limited side and Costa Rica have pretty much matched them. I suspect England and Italy will both feel that they can deal with Uruguay but Costa Rica might require a bit more planning than anticipated.

    I really don’t think so. The spine of England’s midfield and forward line is composed of Liverpool players, and that means attacking, fast paced football whenever possible, with instant pressure on the Italians whenever they get possession.

    Well, I said I was for an epic triumph by Costa Rica – but I never thought it was going to be quite so decisive. What a goal that third one was.

    Pereira was an utter idiot to foul the way he did – and I hope FIFA brings the hammer down with serious intent.

    I wonder how England and Italy will feel about facing Costa Rica now.

    @Steeplejack: Argggh!

    Most of these games are over in less than 2 hours, no?

    @Tissue Thin Pseudonym (JMN): FIFA can review and add to his time, which I’m sure they will. Zidane had a two game suspension for stomping on a Saudi player in 1998.

    @Tissue Thin Pseudonym (JMN): a red card is a multi-game suspension and Randy is indicating that Uruguay isn’t getting out of the group

    Well done Costa Rica!

    Wonder whether this will incentivize even more risk aversion in the Italy-England game?

    @Bill Murray:

    I thought a red card was a 1 game suspension automatically, with FIFA having the option of imposing a further ban for egregious misbehavior.

    @raven:

    Yeah, it starts at 6:00 and should go to about 8:00, depending on how much extra time.

    ETA: Each half 45 minutes, halftime about 15 minutes, stoppage time maybe up to five minutes for each half, that gets you to 7:55. Maybe enough time to sprint down to the theater and spoil the game for someone else.

    @Randy Paul:

    I just can’t pull against a team because of a single player. If, like, say, Italy, Mexico had a long history of cynical play, then, yeah, I could root against ’em. But Mexico doesn’t.

    Here’s the kind of thing that will get me rooting against a team for a very long time.

    @Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again): Agreed. Thankfully that little stunt led to a rule change.

    @Morzer: No. If you get a yellow card and then yellow – red, it’s like that. Every straight red card gets it’s own review panel which decides how many games suspension is appropriate. Usually it’s more than one.

    @Onkel Fritze:

    Gotcha. I had forgotten the difference between two yellows and straight red.

    I would be delighted if Pereira were banned for a half dozen games. That was a malignant foul.

    @Randinho:

    That was the first World Cup I watched, and it turned me off to West Germany (and the later reunified Germany) until the last World Cup. There’d be German players I really liked, such as Klinsmann, and I’d think, “I hope you have a great game, Klinsy, but I also hope you lose.”

    I think the Austrian reaction was utterly despicable, although the commentators deserve much respect for refusing to go along with the farce.

    I guess I shall have to become an Algeria supporter from now on. Especially against the evil Teutonic hordes.

    I was bummed last time around when we drew with Slovenia and Algeria drew with England, knowing Algeria needed a win over us (and by a few goals) to move on.

    So, should we now talk about a distinctively Costa Rican style of play? What do we call it? Tico-taco?

    @Tommy: Because the MOTU’s don’t understand Econ 101. Whether they slept through that class or are deliberately ignoring what they learned is a different question.
