Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

People identifying as christian while ignoring christ and his teachings is a strange thing indeed.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

Radicalized white males who support Trump are pitching a tent in the abyss.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

“woke” is the new caravan.

This blog will pay for itself.

“The defense has a certain level of trust in defendant that the government does not.”

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

Roe is not about choice. It is about freedom.

Bark louder, little dog.

Democracy cannot function without a free press.

“But what about the lurkers?”

Republicans cannot even be trusted with their own money.

Dumb motherfuckers cannot understand a consequence that most 4 year olds have fully sorted out.

This chaos was totally avoidable.

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

Do we throw up our hands or do we roll up our sleeves? (hint, door #2)

“Just close your eyes and kiss the girl and go where the tilt-a-whirl takes you.” ~OzarkHillbilly

The low info voters probably won’t even notice or remember by their next lap around the goldfish bowl.

As it is after midnight here on the east coast, I am now celebrating my 10th Ellieversary. I adopted my neurotic bundle of fluff on June 18, 2004. How time flies. It is hard to get a good picture of her since she doesn’t like the attention of the camera, but here is something relatively recent.

EDIT: Knocking on wood, she hasn’t slowed down at all and still has the energy of a puppy. Most people who meet her are amazed she is that old.

With three another three federal judges confirmed today, including the two openly gay blacks:

    Shin Inouye ✔ @Inouye44

President Obama has now appointed more female judges and more Hispanic judges than any other President

Add to this he’s appointed more women to the Supreme Court than all of his combined predecessors, as well as Janet Yellen at the fed, as well as eliminated gender discrimination in the armed forces.

But yet progressive betters still tell me he’s a sexist

To a raucous embrace, Obama told the LGBT donors Tuesday that American society and its laws have advanced the cause of gay rights over the past 10 years but said the job was hardly over in the United States and especially abroad.

He received a loud standing ovation when he declared that he had directed the White House to prepare an executive order barring discrimination by federal contractors on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.

Immediately after he came on stage to deliver his remarks, which lasted about 15 minutes, Obama embraced lesbian widow Edith Windsor and her attorney Roberta Kaplan.

@OzarkHillbilly: I think I’m going to be smiling a lot over the next two years. As has been pointed out many times, Obama is trolling the nutcase remnants of the Republican party and that’s inherently fun to watch. But he’s also showing Democrats how to be Democrats, and many of them are following that lead and unapologetically taking actually Democratic policy positions.

Plus he’s starting to put into place some significant policies, like the recent EPA stuff, since he’s not worried about re-election. And I think we’re going to see lots more of that legacy stuff.

  47. 47.

    OzarkHillbilly

    June 18, 2014 at 7:24 am

@Randy P: In 2006, Karl Rove’s math drove the “permanent Republican majority” right into a brick wall. Following that electoral disaster came the Surge which was supposed to fix everything that was wrong in Iraq but in reality just proved that if you pay people enuf money, they will stop killing each other. For a while anyway. The ACA was supposed to be the end of the Democratic party for generations. Instead, it is working. Fits and starts but working and getting better. People still like SS and Medicare. They still think the environment is important. They still want their children to be educated.

They still hate bankers. And oilmen. And CEO’s of almost all stripes.

Most of all, they really don’t like being told after a life time of hard work, that the only reason they never made it is because they didn’t work hard enough. They especially don’t like being told that by people who were born with it.

In other words, what the Republicans are selling, people aren’t buying anymore.

The mister and I were just discussing the hurricane hysteria that grips our weather peeps every summer. I’m old enough to remember when we didn’t all obsessively track every puff of clouds that drifts westward from the coast of Africa.

To be fair, that was back when major damage-causing hurricanes occurred within the range of once or twice every decade or two, instead of the 3-5 per decade we’re getting with the increase in global warming/climate change.

I mean, I remember Agnes – which destroyed the homes of about half of my relatives in PA (at the time that was: 4 grandparents, a dozen aunts and uncles, and FSM knows how many cousins) – and that was a piker compared to Katrina and Sandy.

@raven: That’s a bit north of my usual scalloping grounds, but that’s where we head when the pickings are slim in our area. Bonus in Steinhatchee — you can have someone else clean them cheaply if you’re too lazy to do it yourself…

    Betty Cracker

@JGabriel: Ten years ago this summer, we had four hurricanes that were either predicted to hit our area or did brush it, one of which damaged our roof a bit and knocked out our power for a couple of days. I’ll admit I followed the radar loop obsessively in 2004.
