I don’t have anything else for you. Some ideas riffing off my earlier post and turning around, and I might come up with something in a day or so. Or not. It depends on my mood, frankly.
You all remember last year when I drove a deck screw through a board and into my left forearm? Well, last Sunday, I shot a 16 gauge finishing nail into my left middle finger with my new power finishing nail gun. It embedded in the metacarpal. Completely painless until I pulled it out with the pliers. Then my wife, who is smarter than me, hassled me until I went to ER and got a tetanus shot, which sucked. But hey, they gave me a lollipop, so I had that going for me, which was good! And then on Wednesday, I got the first ever kidney stone of my life. Standing in the kitchen drinking coffee when all of a sudden, a sharp pain in my left back side. First thing I thought was “I’m being stabbed!” and I looked over my shoulder and no one was there with a knife or a hockey mask and there was no blood on the floor. Then I collapsed on the floor, doubled up in pain. I figured out that it was a kidney stone by the time my wife drove me to the ER which is about 5 minutes away (which seems increasingly lucky, btw) and they gave me dilaudid in an IV, which is really good shit if you can get it, and a CAT scan, and some pills and a strainer. It passed Thursday evening.
Anyway, here’s a nice shiny new thread for you all to enjoy.

I feel for you. Had a kidney stone attack about 20 years ago; was walking into my apartment carrying my suitcase, just back from visiting my parents, when – WHAM, I felt like somebody hit me with a baseball bat in the lower back. Actually fell down on my knees. Only other times I’ve hurt that bad have been during gout attacks (and, wouldn’t you know, the two are related). Glad you were able to get rid of it.

In other TCM news, there’s still time to set your VCR for a rare Oscar Micheaux silent film, Within Our Gates (1920) tonight at 12:00 am ET/9:00 pm PT. Micheaux pioneered “race films” since black audiences were totally ignored by Hollywood, so it’s worth checking out for that reason alone.

You only had the kidney stone for a day? That’s nothing. I had one for almost 2 weeks. It could be an intermittent sharp pain but it was more of this never being able to find a comfortable position.I have never drank so much water in my life. My urine was clear. Anyhow, I have a friend who told me her husband who is a HS coach had gotten 3 kidney stones. The first they went up with a cath. and actually got it etc. very painful. The second time a buddy of his told him to drink a bunch of beer and that the stone would pass – which he did and the stone passed the next morning. The third time, he also drank a six pack and passed the stone the second day. I rarely drink and esp. not beer so I got some of the hard lemonade stuff and I passed the stone the next day. Not sure in my case if it was the alcohol since I had had the stone for 11 days and 80+ percent of people pass kidney stones within 2 weeks.

I read that as John robbing one off on you. Think of the children.
Had a friend on his back nailing the underside of something, laid the gun on his stomach and it slid down and nailed his side to the floor. He couldn’t figure out why he couldn’t get up. Fun times.

If it makes you feel better, I had been in the dumps for weeks. Sharp pain on right side of chest last couple days, made sleep difficult. Mowed the lawn and was gulping for air yesterday. Neighbor told me last night he could see me gasping for air, and if I did not see a doctor in the next two days he would take me. Went in this afternoon, walking pnuemonia. For once, glad I went in.

Re: the OP, one would think that an experienced 11B wouldn’t shoot himself in the hand. OTOH, one would be wrong. On behalf of the King of Battle, I would like to note that I have never hurt myself while carrying a dog, mopping naked, using deck screws, or a nail gun. In fairness however, I will note that I split open and dislocated my left index finger while playing dodge ball during Officers’ PT.*
*In my day, Thursday mornings mornings were designated as Sergeants’ Time and were an opportunity for NCOs to work with and train soldiers without other requirements getting in the way. Officers would do OPT, and then use the time to catch up on paperwork or the like. OPT tend towards the violent and/or weird. Tagball was popular – a game where people fought over trying to get a knotted-up sweatshirt away across a line with no other real rules. Dodge ball managed two broken noses and my finger before the CO banned it.

As for your skin issue, a lot of skin issues are related to gut issues. Have you tried taking probiotics? Broth can be really good for the gut too. @Mike J:
I sprained my lower back playing basketball at UNC-Chapel Hill back in 1974, severely enough that I couldn’t get out of bed for three days, and repeatedly, painfully discovered over the next week or so how difficult it is to move *any* muscle in your body beside your fingers and toes, without involving your lower back muscles in some way. Ok, so it wasn’t while playing for the UNC Tarheel basketball team in the NCAA tournament, but in a pickup game in old Woolen gym on the UNC campus. The Hell of it was that the injury occurred as the result of the best basketball shake-and-bake move I ever put on a defender in my life – starting from the top of the key, I literally faked my fairly athletic defender out of his shorts and drove around him with two quick cutting dribbles into a twisting-in-the-air, rim-touching layup (I could still touch the rim back then, though I never quite could dunk the ball). The problem was that after my takeoff jump into the air for the layup off my left leg, I got so caught up watching the beautiful layup go into the basket that I was oblivious to the fact that my left leg was still extended straight, and landed a bit flat-footed on it with my torso still half-turned. I felt a warm rippling sensation in my back, but didn’t realize it was anything to worry about until a few seconds later when it started to stiffen up and began throbbing with such searing pain I could barely drag myself to the sideline of the court we were playing on, and had to be helped to the ER.
Every once in a great while, if I take an awkward step, that old injury still gives me lower back spasms that force me to lay out on a couch for 15-30 minutes until it passes.

I have had kidney stones (3 caught in strainers, at least one or two more that weren’t).
The amount of pain is pretty variable. Of the ones caught, #1 and #3 were the worst. The first one took something like 3 months to come out, although it was only (?) about 3-4 weeks before it made it from ureter to bladder, after which it was no longer painful (except for the final ejection that is).
When they do hurt a lot, they hurt a lot. There’s no specific nerve for “pain from ureter distension” so the pain signal is delivered on one or both of two generic nerves. One of those is meant for gut issues—so my first kidney stone was announced by a sudden vomiting episode, which did not feel exactly like pain at all, initially—and the other mainly delivers pain signals from the ovaries or testicles.
In other words, kidney stones are like being kicked in the balls, repeatedly.
Mike J
@cmorenc: I’m still convinced the real damage was done at that night’s party in my dorm when Andrea and Mary decided that a gang tickle was in order. Yes, I had already had an x-ray that said that the actual nasal bone was broken, not just displaced cartilage, but it hurt more after the tickle. Doesn’t sound as macho though.
All this happened after the doctor at the student health center had told me to stay off my nose for a week or two.
Suzanne
@Violet: I have been taking probiotics for quite a while now. The thing that helps the best is birth control pills, which I can’t take because they interfere with my anti-seizure med. Second best is doxycycline, which I obviously can’t be on long-term. Beyond that, they have not found any specific trigger in me. Some people that get this rash have a reaction to the fluoride in toothpaste (and yes, that’s actually documented by doctors), while some react to peppermint or cinnamon flavoring. It’s very frustrating, because when it flares up, it feels like someone sanded my skin with sandpaper. Not to mention, I am almost thirty-five and would like to be done with skin issues, FFS.

I just convinced my husband that he needs to spend the rest of the week at his brother’s while his brother undergoes various appointments, scans, etc. as they try to nail down treatment options for his newly diagnosed Atypical T-Cell Lymphoma. He’s already been there 2 weeks and was planning to return Tuesday. It has been super stressful, but when I explained that there is the potential for the news from the PET scan to be very, very bad and it would be best if he was there if that is the case. Luckily he has been able to work some via laptop, but this is truly the last week he can be there for a bit if he wants to keep his job due to his responsibilities.
The lymphoma has presented as lesions on both feet, which are now so painful that his brother can barely walk. My husband is trying to set up a driving service to get his brother back and forth to appointments and radiation therapy with wheelchair assistance since every step is excruciating, plus home care to come by for a few hours each day to help care for him and their elderly father, who’s senility seems to have suddenly really increased in severity. My husband’s brother is a bit OCD and ADD, and when things get stressful he just plain shuts down and can’t/won’t do what needs to be done. Plus he has been completely resistant to hiring any help, probably because he sees his illness as a moral weakness, but now that he can’t walk there is no choice. If my husband doesn’t get these transportation and home care services arranged, I can see his brother failing to make his therapy appointments because he’ll just blow it all off due to his anger and frustration at what is happening to him.
It doesn’t help that we live in Colorado and his dad and brother live in a small town in Michigan. I hope for everyone’s sake that the cancer is limited to his feet and the planned 3 weeks of radiation does the job and the hematologist & radiologist don’t discover new things this week that show things to be much worse than initially suspected. He can’t even start therapy until the week after this one, and my husband says the lesions are much worse, so every day waiting to get started is making his brother hit his stress limit multiple times each day. Tough times, and totally out of the blue as of 2 weeks ago.

Soonergrunt,
So glad to hear Soonerdaughter is doing better. I have intermittant Irritable Bowel Syndrome, well treated with a simple turquiose capsule when I am aware enough to take one in a timely manner. I know her syndrome can be much worse, and so am really glad to hear she is doing well.
Nice that she is growing up relatively smoothly also, although I’m sure your learning permit rite of passage will be quite painful for you and your SO.
Regarding your adventure with the nail gun, my best friend remaining from HS times was building a cat house for a feral kitty they were caring for, who wouldn’t come in for the winter, and nailed his thumb to the palm of his hand with a 16pd framing nail. He got pissed at his wife who wouldn’t remove the nail with a carpenter-type tool. He had to go to the ER to get the nail removed, which was hard since you can’t use a hand with the thumb nailed to your palm.
Fortunately, he hasn’t lost any functionality in his hand from the accident.
I bought a nail gun some time back after working on a building project with a gfriend who had one, butane operated explosion to force the nail into the framing. Rarely needed another hit with a framing hammer to get flush, maybe one in a hundred, if you didn’t get enough pressure on the gun to get a good hit onto the nail hear.
No air coil or electrical cord, just a little butane cartridge, a wonderful tool, 8 penny and 16 penny headed nails, just push on the spot you need to nail, pull the trigger, I think it would be hard to accidently nail yourself as the safety switch at the business nose of the gun was quite hard to trip, lots of force needed. No experimenting, tho!!
Keep up the good work posting, we miss you when you’re scarce!
raven
@JR in WV: Building a cat house huh?

Whenever I start doing any work around the house more complicated than vacuuming or doing the dishes, the first thing my wife does is pull out my innoculation records, then she checks to see who the doc on call is in our doctors’ office. I am waiting for the time she just automatically contacts the ER to reserve a space for me.

@Suzanne: Have you tried calling your regular doctor and just asking for a refill of the cheap, generic doxycycline? As long as I knew it was for perioral dermatitis, I would have had it phoned in without a second thought. The worse thing that will happen is that they would want to see you for an appointment so make sure that you say “perioral dermatitis” in the message. Barring that, you could go to a doc-in-the-box at CVS. My dad has been taking 1/2 a generic 100mg daily to control rosacea for at least a decade. The 40mg tablet is expensive and name brand.
Also, sun exposure can trigger it sometimes.
Mnemosyne
@StringOnAStick:
If he hasn’t already, your husband should request family leave under FMLA. It’s 16 weeks and by law he can’t be fired for taking it. It might be better to have him come back, work a few weeks, and then request it when his brother starts treatment. One of the requirements is that he certify that no one else can do the caretaking, but that sounds like that’s the case here.
Mnemosyne
@Waynski:
Luckily, my husband is taking the day off and will be my driver. His only condition is that they don’t make him watch. ;-)
@Stella B.:
One of the biggest things that helped my rosacea was switching to products without preservatives (right now, I’m using Ilike Skincare, but there are others). I also use Noritate every day (though I have to get it from Canada since the US price has skyrocketed), but the combination of preservative-free wash and moisturizer and 45 SPF sunscreen every day keeps things well under control. Before that, I was having occasional breakouts even with the Noritate.
