Finally caught the Doctor Who from last night. Had a sandwich generation weekend dealing with parental health problems. Everyone is ok now so I’m catching up on chores and laundry before tomorrow.
@redshirt:
Don’t take these awards so seriously. If Mad Max: Fury Road is that good for you, it will be that good whether it sweeps all its Oscar categories or wins nothing at all.
Saw it because you can’t seem to shut up about it. I regret it. Awful. Maybe more so than the original, which is saying something. Of course, it might be the lead, who I really don’t like much as an actress. Nah. Stupid movie. To each their own, I guess. But, if you don’t mind, I won’t be taking your film recommendations again. Our tastes are pretty much at the opposite, I’m thinking.
@redshirt:
I liked its unexpected depth, and that it was all about the women. My own favourite movie of recent years was the musical Les Misérables. Anne Hathaway was magnificent as Fantine, and she swept the Best Supporting Actress category that awards season; but I would have loved her performance every bit as much even if she had won nothing.
I bet Mad Max wins multiple Oscars. The critics slobbered over it near-unanimously.
Technical ones, maybe. It’s still an action movie. What the Oscars want is a prestige drama that makes them feel good for not being bigots or racists. Particularly if one of the leads is playing a developmentally disabled person.
edit: @redshirt beat me to it. Best Pic and Actress, no way. Even though I really liked it.

Felt like tackling some more polishing of silver.
Then had the good sense to lie down until the feeling went away.
No way. Even if it was a good movie, which I vigorously dispute, it’s not the kind of film that wins the big awards like Best Movie or Best Actress.
You’re probably right, but it’s made a lot of critics Best Film list, and it got re-released last week in IMAX for Oscar reasons. My bet would be it doesn’t win best film, but Theron wins best actress.

@redshirt: Don’t get me wrong, I thought Theron – who is hotter than the blue blazes – nailed that part. But there’s a reason genre nerds like me don’t get to vote for Oscars.
I’m very excited that Viola Davis won, even though I don’t watch her show. Among other things, she has one of the best dresses of the night. Also pleased for Jon Hamm, though they kind of gave it away by having Tina Fey be the presenter.
Jon Hamm won! Hard to believe he’s only won one Emmy. Nominated seven times for Mad Men and three or four times for guest spots in 30 Rock and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Can’t really complain about losing to Bryan Cranston or even Kyle Chandler. But the year he lost to Jeff Daniels, that hot garbage The Newsroom-yuck. His episode that year, “In Care Of,” was one of the best Mad Men episodes of all time. I’d even put it up against any Breaking Bad episode Cranston won an Emmy for.

@benw: I’ve been hoping this is the year Tarantino finally wins a directing Oscar. I’ve called him overrated for years (never understood the Pulp Fiction fuss, though I liked Jackie Brown), but I thought his last two films were really good.
He was just great in that. Some of the best acting ever on TV. But he should have won several times. Jeff Daniel for Newsroom was just horrific. Not a Chandler fan either. I do get the Bryan Cranston love even though I hated that show. He’s a great actor.
My bet would be it doesn’t win best film, but Theron wins best actress.
Look, don’t get your hopes up. For example, Terminator 2 is IMO not just one of the greatest action movies ever, but one of the best movies period. It’s Unfuckwithable. It’s – don’t take this personally – better than Fury Road. And it won Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Makeup, and Best Visual Effects. Linda Hamilton – who IMO also nailed her part, the movie sucked if Sarah Connor wasn’t exactly right – wasn’t even nominated.
@MomSense: I find the daughter kinda annoying. She seems a tad too judgmental and a bit of a busybody.

@redshirt: As an action film fan, I think it was easily the best action film in at least a decade. There have been some cute, wink-wink self-aware action movies, but none really good.
Imo, a good action movie is either really well-written and tight like Die Hard (my favorite action movie) or just an incredible spectacle, like the new Mad Max. I don’t think there’s been as good a spectacle action movie in fucking years.
Look, don’t get your hopes up. For example, Terminator 2 is IMO not just one of the greatest action movies ever, but one of the best movies period. It’s Unfuckwithable. I don’t doubt your right, Oscar wise. But I don’t really care about the Oscars either.
But Fury Road is WAY better then T2. I’m prepared to argue this point.
Also, times are different than 1993. I think Fury Road will get more “serious” consideration then T2 did.
Tatiana Maslany deserved the Emmy, imo. Her show is a much heavier lift, acting wise.
I don’t think awards committees are set up to deal with what Tatiana Maslany does. Oh well.
FWIW, I thought Mad Max was incredible cinema, cinema at its best, and I took the advice of my friends to sit close to the screen at the theatre with the best sound system in town.

@schrodinger’s cat: I used to think that, but I think the actress has matured a lot, and thus the character, and now you can really see her mother in her, which (if I’m right about the direction they’re heading in) may be really dangerous for one of them.
I think the actress who plays Martha is really strong too. And fucking John Boy Walton!

@geg6: I never thought much of Chandler but I have a soft spot for Friday Night Lights. And Bloodline is a very flawed show (great first several episodes but it ends with a whimper) with some fine acting. Although Chandler is solid in it, Ben Mendelsohn just steals the fucking show. I don’t know if Mendelsohn won tonight, but he should have.
I used to ride the elevated line to my grandmother’s off Blue Hill Avenue in Dorchester. When I started going by myself, the street level trolleys also ran out along Washington Street under the El to Egleston Square, and the route down Seaver Street (now the 29 bus) was also trolleys.

@efgoldman:
The movie has a running time of about 160 minutes, more or less the same as a stage performance. And it wasn’t only one or two tunes, as you claim; it was three or four. As to coincidence-based melodrama not cutting it in the 21st century, I should mention that, one, Hugo’s novel remains a populist classic; and two, the original West End production is now in its 30th year — and still pulling in the crowds!
Oh, we’re not alone. I know lots of people who didn’t like it. The ones who do, though, are quite weirdly passionate about it. I find Game of Thrones fans to be similar. They have no idea how baffling their love for it is to the rest of us.
I’ve been hoping this is the year Tarantino finally wins a directing Oscar.
It’s interesting you didn’t like Pulp Fiction. I personally found some of the scenes in both PF and Reservoir Dogs tough to watch, but didn’t for a minute doubt that I wasn’t watching an amazing movie that had the ability to hit some really strong emotions. Even if it wasn’t exactly fun to watch in the moment.
@efgoldman: Damn, Steeplejack’s right; you are very old.
OT: So the wife and I(the kid tagged along for a free dinner) headed off to Koreatown to get new phones(and change carriers). They(Sprint) didn’t have my first or second choices in phones(Note Edge and Note 4), apparently Sprint just pulled them off the market about a week or so ago. So I returned home feeling like I’d just been told Santa doesn’t exist with my old phone. :P
For example, Terminator 2 is IMO not just one of the greatest action movies ever, but one of the best movies period.

@pseudonymous in nc: I think Orphan Black is still sort of flying under the radar, even though it’s been noticed by the Emmys. This was my same gripe about The Americans-it’s been fantastic since its first season and yet nothing from the Emmys then.
There is some meritocracy to it, maybe only accidentally though. Jon Hamm was the best in his category this year, I know that. But too much of it is based on popularity and buzz. I stopped taking the Emmys so seriously when I noticed a couple years ago that The Americans and Orphan Black went unnoticed.

@redshirt: that is a bit unfair. T1 and T2 are very different genre wise though. The original Terminator is really a thriller. T2 is one of the best action movies ever made. Pretty impressive that Cameron made both.
Sadly, not that surprised. Until Shonda Rhimes had a couple of hits and gained enough power, there really wasn’t anyone willing to give black women the lead in a drama. Fortunately for everyone, “Scandal” was a huge hit and paved the way.

@Steeplejack: I stopped by the local Sprint store about a week and a half ago and played with the Note Edge; they must have pulled within a day or two after that. The only phone that they had was my 3rd choice, the LG G4. Now, I’ll wait for a bit; I’m still very happy with my Note 3 and I put a bid on a Note Edge on Ebay.
But I just didn’t find Pulp Fiction terribly deep.
That’s true, Tarantino’s early movies were like great roller coasters. Afterwards, you couldn’t wait to ride again, but you didn’t think about them later. Starting with Inglorious Basterds I realized Tarantino had something more to say about the human condition. Still, I wouldn’t have complained if he won Best Director for PF, because sometimes a movie can be just an amazing thrill ride.

that is a bit unfair. T1 and T2 are very different genre wise though. The original Terminator is really a thriller. T2 is one of the best action movies ever made. Pretty impressive that Cameron made both.
T1 is more of a genuine horror movie. T2 took almost every single plot point and was, as you say, an action movie, with some comedy. As a time traveling concept, it certainly works. But in reality, it’s just a big budget remake.
I remember people were OUTRAGED that Henson was written off “Person of Interest,” and she wasn’t able to say why until “Empire” got picked up. She defended the producers as best she could, though.
(IIRC, she asked the producers of “Person of Interest” to write her off their show so she could do “Empire,” and they kindly obliged, but then none of them could say why while “Empire” was still in development, so the producers looked like jerks for a while.)
I finally saw that movie a couple months ago. Thought Tarantino cast himself in the role he did simply for the thrill of being able to say a bad word (the N word) twenty times and then sit back and go “but duuuude, that’s not ME, it’s just a CHARACTER in a MOVIE!”
You need to re-watch “Jackie Brown.” That was the turning point artistically for Tarantino, IMO.
Though, as a film major, I did enjoy that Tarantino made a point of killing off Emil Jannings in “Basterds.” It’s one of those deep in-jokes that you have to be a very specific kind of movie fan to appreciate.

Yes, I am a transit nut. Started riding when I was 12-ish. Why do you ask?
lol. You beat me. I first came to Boston in 1991 and the Big Dig was just getting started. The Orange Line was already in place though and hasn’t really changed since, excepting the incredible Assembly Square. Which used to be (as I recall) an industrial wasteland.
That is kind of too bad, I’m still going through that series and really like her character in Person Of Interest. (Never seen Empire). I’m sorry for that series’ sake that she didn’t stay.
Yes, but “Empire” is a much better role for Henson, plus she’s the lead (which is why she was up against Davis in the same category this year). It was definitely a move up.

But seriously, T2 is not a “literal remake” of Terminator. It’s a sequel in the real sense in that it continues the story of the main characters. Fury Road is actually a reboot, in that the original trilogy is not the background of the story. But my most important point, is that Linda Hamilton’s Sarah Connor is a AMAZING piece of acting that held the entire movie together – seriously all the dudes in that movie were playing ROBOTS! – and she didn’t crack the Best Actress noms! FU Oscars!

@Mnemosyne (tablet): a film major? Re-watch Jackie Brown, you say? Sold!!
Yeah, I remember that one of our commenters (Lamh46?) was incensed, but to me it didn’t have the feel of “Let’s get rid of this person.” Her character’s ending arc—which I’ve just seen again on the WGN rerun marathon—was so well crafted that it felt like a worthy, even loving, send-off. I thought maybe Henson wanted to go back to movies, but the light bulb went off when Empire showed up.
I don’t know the ins and outs of the Emmys, but Henson deserved at least a supporting-actress nomination for Person of Interest. In watching the reruns on WGN, I have been surprised to be reminded how nuanced all the character relationships are, especially the one between Detective Carter (Henson) and Reese (Jim Caviezel).
ETA: Just checked IMDB and see that she was nominated this year for Empire. Don’t know if she won tonight.
Okay, first of all you quoted somebody else as me so you are a terrible, terrible commenter who ought to be BANNED!! :)

But T2 is a point for point remake of T1. But it makes sense within the series as it’s time travel and one could say the first movie made the second movie (and the 3rd, and 4th, and so on…).
T2 is a great movie. But not as great as T1.

It’s not though. First, T1 is a horror boogyman, not really action. Still, I admit that the action beats are close to T1, but in T2, the protagonist is Sarah Connor, not the man sent to help her. T2 is shot from her POV, if you don’t buy her terror at seeing the T-800, the movie fails. I thought in fact that Fury Road was similar to T2, in that I realized as the movie went along that Furiosa was the protagonist more than Max. As you say, the action beats are very similar between T1 and T2. On purpose, I think. Sarah Connor is the hero of both, but in the first she survives the horror, and in the second, she’s an active agent in it. That’s the difference between the two movies.
One exception was a neighborhood of mostly very nice (if smallish) private houses near the Throg’s Neck bridge, abutting L.I. Sound and running up to and paralleling the Cross-Bronx Expwy. I think the Daily Show is like ‘Don’t ask Don’t tell’ It will be looked back on as an important milestone but will be bitched and moaned at by the left while it is happening (even though it is doing as much as it can to pull things left while staying balanced)
1. Sarah Connor has a son in T2. She has no son inT1, and yet is the same character.
2. Her son is the protagonist who has been told his mother is insane because she insists the events of T1 actually happened.
3. There are two battling Terminators inT2. There is one Terminator in T1.
4. T2 takes places 12 years after T1. The events of the original film inform the events of the sequel.
5. Characters in T2 act based on their knowledge of what happened to them in T1.
Do I really need to go on? Again, you seem to have confused formal similarities meant to draw parallels between the two films as somehow negating the first film. I’m assuming you also thought that “Return of the Jedi” was a remake of “The Empire Strikes Back” since those films were also structured to parallel each other.

The victory defied expectations for an inconclusive result, even a possible victory by the opposition New Democracy party, which had accused Syriza of plunging the country back into recession after tentative growth in 2014.

There was a piece the other day where his donors are mad- Walker has a big staff and a lot of expenses and they think he should have pared down and re-focused on voters in primary states.
I’m getting interviewed for a piece on the Common Core in Ohio today. I’m the “parent”. Well, truly I am a parent but public school pieces are always written like ” a teacher says, a parent says, a politician says…” I feel I have a nuanced critique but that isn’t what it will end up as- it will be a blurty, truncated black/white opinion no matter what I say.
I’m getting interviewed for a piece on the Common Core in Ohio today.
You can say “I blame Obama” and mean it!

Awesome. I hope his loser stink helps out the Dems in Wisconsin. (I assume he’s term limited, but hopefully his aura carries over to the next nominee.)
You could also point out that it’s a set of standards and that there’s no better way to ensure the future of American Exceptionalism than by establishing a standard of excellence.
I tend to keep my phones for a long time (I was using a Palm Treo 755p until a couple of years ago), so I’m looking for something that won’t feel like an abacus in a couple of years. ;-) Phones will always be better in a Friedman Unit or two, but the Snapdragon 820 sounds like it’s worth waiting for.

@gogol’s wife: I think the performance was too subtle for a popularity contest like the Emmys. Mark Rylance is a superb actor, but that’s just not the type of program or acting that the Emmys typically reward. There’s no way they could’ve gotten away with not nominating him, but I’m not surprised he didn’t win. Even though he deserved it.
Same reason I’m not surprised that Mad Men only ever got one acting award in all its years-Jon Hamm last night. Moss should’ve gotten one. Vincent Kartheiser was also robbed-I don’t think he was ever nominated.
Shit, Jon Hamm deserved it, but I’m not convinced he would’ve won if he hadn’t become so popular and broken into comedy over the years. Mad Men sort of disappeared from the cultural radar after season 4-it was still good but didn’t seem to get as much buzz.

I liked its unexpected depth, and that it was all about the women. My own favourite movie of recent years was the musical Les Misérables. Technical ones, maybe. It’s still an action movie. What the Oscars want is a prestige drama that makes them feel good for not being bigots or racists. Particularly if one of the leads is playing a developmentally disabled person.

Can’t really complain about losing to Bryan Cranston or even Kyle Chandler. But the year he lost to Jeff Daniels, that hot garbage The Newsroom-yuck.

FU Oscars!

BillinGlendaleCA
@PurpleGirl: Tomorrow would still be appropriate on the better(west) coast.

I’m sorry, but you’re an idiot. You have absolutely no clue what the hell you’re talking about. You have no idea how storytelling works if you don’t know the difference between a sequel and a remake. They are NOT THE SAME THING.
Please stop talking now, because I’m embarrassed for you.
Omnes Omnibus
@BillinGlendaleCA: Good point. I meant the T1 vs T2, but damn…
Me, I am going to be off in the corner being happy about the Packer’s win and my niece’s 2d place in a soccer tournament where her team was expected to bomb.
redshirt
@Mnemosyne (tablet):
lol your quote makes me think the same.
Go ahead and tell me how T2 isn’t a near shot for shot remake of T1.
Canadian shield
I think the Daily Show is like ‘Don’t ask Don’t tell’ It will be looked back on as an important milestone but will be bitched and moaned at by the left while it is happening (even though it is doing as much as it can to pull things left while staying balanced)
Lamh36
@Steeplejack: THANK YOU!!
I was so mad when they killed off Carter and honestly haven’t watch it since…
Mnemosyne (tablet)
@redshirt:
Sure:
Canadian shield
@Canadian shield: I meant to put scary finger quotes around ‘staying balanced’

@Steeplejack: she lost to Viola Davis, but is was definitely Viola’s year. I cam certainly see Taraji being back in next year .

@Omnes Omnibus: Well, her degree is from U$C; so there’s that.

Just to be cantankerous, I’ll observe that:
In a science fiction movie about time travel, it’s always possible for the prequel to also be the sequel.
Also:
Do you not understand retconing??
Retconing power totally gets upgraded in time travel stories.
:)
Omnes Omnibus
@BillinGlendaleCA: Not going to enter that fight.
@Thoughtful Today: I’ll just call you a total geek and leave it there. Seriously, that might be the geekiest comment I have ever seen.

Well, USC’s film school is better than UCLA’s. Sorry, dude, truth is truth. :-)
But if it makes you feel better, I actually turned USC down for my MFA and went to LMU instead.

oh and Shoutout to Regina King for her Emmy win for American Crime…30 years into this business and receiving recognitions! that was probably the surprising acting win of the night. she wasn’t even in top 5 of experts predictions.
also too congrats to Uzo Adubo, winning for OINB, only her and Ed Asner have EVER won an acting award for the same character in two different categories! she won this year for drama, last year for comedy!

I saw the woman sitting next to Uzo Adubo and said to G, “That HAS to be her sister, they look so much alike.” And it was! I love when people bring their mom or their sibling to award shows.

@efgoldman: i grew up next to the 93/95/128 interchange in Westwood. Way to young to have lived through much of the building but my mom always pointed out that there was supposed to be a direct road to Cambridge before someone pulled their head out of their ass and realized what a dumb idea it was!

How are the Note 5s? I saw an ad during the Emmys that featured their note taking abilities, and I almost got on the tubes to buy one.
BillinGlendaleCA
…and back to Hillz emails, CLICK.
BillinGlendaleCA
Never heard of a Note 5s, but yes the Note series comes with a stylus and a Wacom digitizer in the screen.
ETA: The Note5 does not have a removable back so the battery cannot be replaced by the user and there is no sd-card capability.
ETA2: These are the reasons I will not purchase a Note5.

This is something the latest Terminator movie, Terminator Genisys tries to do and fails at, miserably.
But a retconned time travel story is more dynamic if it also involves a multi-verse.

Kay
@Baud:
I went to a Dem event Saturday night and a Republican told me the kids table was a chance for the loser candidates to break thru so there won’t be any more pre-debates. Just the two. I don’t know if that’s correct, but that’s what he said.

@Kay: That’s too bad. I was looking forward to Walker having to make a humiliating choice whether to drop out or accept his demotion.

@BillinGlendaleCA: Also, the upcoming Marshmallow version (6) of Android has built-in support for Bluetooth styluseses – Android Police. I don’t know if that will give all/most of the capabilities of the Note devices, but it’s good to see.
I’ve been eyeing the LG G4 for a while, but I’m on T-Mobile (and have no interest in switching at the moment) and only 3 unlocked phones have support for VoLTE and 700 MHz LTE Band 12 so I’d have to get the locked version. There are some differences between the H811 T-Mobile version and the H815 International version, also too – search for “volte” for KJNaj’s review at the T-Mobile site – t-mobile.com/cell-phones/lg-g4.html#reviews .
I’m probably going to continue to wait while still using my trusty Nexus 4, myself.
Cheers,
Scott.

@Baud: Well, I ran into a bit of a problem, Sprint pulled the Note Edge and the Note 4 out of their offerings. Best Buy still seems to have them and I’ve got a bid on a Note Edge on Ebay. So yes, I want another Note(I’ve got a Note3 now) but last year’s model.
Baud
@BillinGlendaleCA: Ah, got it. Good luck with your search. I’m sure it’s available somewhere.
Kay
@Baud:
That piece says he has to stay in until November because there’s another debate, so I don’t know. They could just mean he hopes to rise to debate-worthy or something.

@Kay:
You can say “I blame Obama” and mean it!
Awesome. I hope his loser stink helps out the Dems in Wisconsin. (I assume he’s term limited, but hopefully his aura carries over to the next nominee.)

Or, I could focus on Kasich (who supports it) and remind GOP voters of that :)
Better, I could say “President Obama and Governor Kasich….” 7 or 8 times. Just keep putting those two together.

@Kay: I like the way you think. I’d be concerned about the paper editing out the Kasich references, however.

You could also point out that it’s a set of standards and that there’s no better way to ensure the future of American Exceptionalism than by establishing a standard of excellence.

@Brachiator: The rumors about the LG and Huawei Nexus phones don’t seem especially compelling to me, unfortunately, but maybe they’ll surprise us.
Cheers,

@Omnes Omnibus:
for mclaren, it’s the closest thing to a joke I’ve seen in years.
OTOH, getting the name of the tv show wrong kinda ruins it.
oh well, back to the ol’ drawin’ board.
Full metal Wingnut
