Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

“And when the Committee says to “report your income,” that could mean anything!

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

No Justins, No Peace

I really should read my own blog.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

Republicans in disarray!

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

You cannot shame the shameless.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

Let’s finish the job.

Everybody saw this coming.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

I know this must be bad for Joe Biden, I just don’t know how.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

NASA’s new class of astronauts is 50% female for the first time ever https://t.co/Shedn38rhD (h/t @ErinELindsay)

Progress!

Also, these two dogs are hilarious.

(Of course what the black dog is really “saying” to the photographer is “Okay, you are dominant over me. But I am totally dominant over this guy!!!”… which is a little less sweet than the final shot might imply. Still a great clip!)

    This is a bit late to be posting this idea, but perhaps the best antidote to Trump is for Black and Latino church groups to send their congregants as good-will ambassadors to talk to people waiting in line at Trump rallies. They spend hours waiting in line, and I think really overwhelming friendliness and taking the high ground might help get through. Such actions would explicitly *not* be protests. I’m not religious so I don’t know the term, but I assume it’s something like “fellowship” — reaching out to fellow Christians to bond over their faith.

    reaching out to fellow Christians to bond over their faith

    I see the flaw already.

    Then there’s this guy… Honestly, watching him geek out over the Pluto data was worth it.

    @Yutsano:

    Is it that Trump supporters aren’t particularly religious? Not a problem — they probably still think of themselves as Christians. I think that the only way to break through is to reach them on a one-on-one personal level, and the only thing that can transcend race / ethnicity for folks like that is their religious affiliation.

    @BR:
    I think what Yutsano means is that Trump’s following might well see themselves as Christians, but would they see an African-American church lady or a Latin Catholic man as fellow Christians?

    @Amir Khalid: A Trump spokeswoman posted an anti Catholic tweet the other day. Laughing at how sad Catholics are for believing Jesus founded the Church.

    Did Biden just go off the reservation?

    US Vice President Joe Biden on Saturday condemned the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) as a “terror group plain and simple” and a threat to Turkey like the militant Islamic State (IS) group, hailing the growing cooperation with Ankara in the fight against militants.
    [snip]
    Ankara is also concerned about the extent of US cooperation in Syria with the People’s Protection Units (YPG), which Turkey sees as a branch of the PKK. IS “is not the only existential threat to the people of Turkey, the PKK is equally a threat and we are aware of that… it is a terror group plain and simple and what they continue to do is absolutely outrageous,” Biden said. Source

    France gets the nod.

    Iranian officials say the country’s flagship airline will finalize a deal to purchase 114 jets from Airbus when President Hassan Rouhani visits France on Wednesday. Source

    And this.

    The Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia issued a fatwa this week, banning the popular game [of chess], which according to him is “a waste of time” and contrary to Islamic law.

    Chess is no more saintly in Saudi Arabia. The Grand Mufti of the Wahhabi kingdom, Sheikh Abdullah Bin Abdulazziz, the highest Sunni religious leader of the country, said this week during his weekly television show that chess was now “forbidden”. The religious man was responding to a question from a viewer of his program on religious matters in Saudi Arabia.
    [snip]
    Even more surprising in this desert country, a fatwa was also launched against the building of snowmen in 2015, describing them as anti-Islamic. According to Sheikh Saleh al-Munajjid, such a construction would mean to create a being in the image of a human being, an action considered a sin in the country, as reported by The Independent. They’d need to go in realizing that their lives are in danger. This, of course, hasn’t necessarily stopped people before.

    @BR: I actually think that’s a great idea.

    We tend to stereotype Trump voters here. I think a one to one approach; peeling them off, has merit.

    (Although peeling them off so they can support Ted Cruz or another Republican — the problem is them voting Republican, which worships and coddles mammon over all.)

    Getting them to stay home? Now that could work …

    In 1960, a PR guy from NASA came to guest-lecture our fifth grade class. I remember him saying that ‘any one of you could grow up to be an astronaut’; someone asked if that included the girls and he answered that yes, it does.

    I’ve often wondered about that day since. It’s beyond unlikely that anyone from NASA would tell a bunch of 10-year-olds anything not intended for the public; what I’ve guessed is that this man had a daughter who had asked him that more than once.
