Omnes Omnibus
I am going with Argentina.
eclare
Same with the crowd, glad the stadium looks full. Wonder how many are there just to see Messi.
ThresherK
Wow, Chile got their dollar’s worth for that yellow card.
ThresherK
Ouch! I’ve never seen anyone hit the woodwork that hard. I know he’s down but I can imagine much worse.
Punchy
Watching without volume…what the fuck was the red for? We cant figgy that out….he turned back….why red?
Omnes Omnibus
@Punchy: Second yellow.
eclare
@Punchy: FIFA guy in the booth said something similar. Didn’t look like a red to me, but I don’t watch much.
ETA: friend of mine who does watch a lot said it is because they are all targeting Messi, and the first one was bad. That makes sense.
BillCinSD
@eclare: It was a horrible call, Diaz pulled out of the challenge and Messi jumped onto Diaz and then fell down and signaled the ref should card the defender. I’m not sure it was even a foul, let alone a yellow.
Evidently Messi has been taking Ronaldo lessons
Wyrm1
Horrible call but there was no chance Messi isn’t going to get whatever call he wants
eclare
@BillCinSD: Make up call?
BillCinSD
and Messi gets a Yellow for diving
ThresherK
What are the fewest players one can have on the field to legally continue? If one team gets down to 7, do they forfeit?
BillCinSD
@eclare: a. there should be no such thing, b. I don’t think this would have been a case anyway. You can call a foul without a yellow.
Rojo gets a straight red, which probably was not a good call either. The ref is kind of out of his league
BillCinSD
@ThresherK: I think you can play with 7, but 6 is the forfeit
Calliope Jane
“The ref is making it about himself today” that’s what it looks like from my inexperienced eyes. Two reds in the first half?
Punchy
Ok what the hell was THAT red for?

9-8 final score. I mean, players on the pitch.
Ref is like a shitty Collina impersonator.
philadelphialawyer
Shut up Messi. You got a guy sent off for nothing, and now you fully earned your diving yellow card. You’re the best player in the world, you don’t need to play act. You have a full half to win.
BillCinSD
@Punchy: I think it was the tackle, which probably looked much worse from where the ref was.

Good point from FS1 analyst Aly Wagner that MetLife Stadium, being designed primarily for handegg, is narrower than the teams are used to — it’s FIFA-legal, but it’s not FIFA-recommended. I think other stadiums built with dual-purpose in mind can be FIFA-recommended.
raven
@pseudonymous in nc: The UGA stadium that was used for the 96 Olympics was like that even after we took out the beloved hedges!
ThresherK (GPad)
@pseudonymous in nc: Gawd, it’s like the CFL USA expansion all over again, cramming fields where they don’t quite fit.
Well, except people are turning out to watch this. We’ll always have the Shreveport Pirates.
Wyrm1
The red Messi drew was horrible but the second red was probably worse. Ref is losing this one
raven
@ThresherK (GPad): The Bears played in Wrigley Field for 50 years and one endzone was cut by the wall.
BillCinSD
evidently, the teams decided to take it easy for a bit
ThresherK (GPad)
@raven: Wow. That’s the kind of thing I already should have known. I can’t take my eyes off the door 3 feet beyond the endline, either. (Not that the ivy’s a lot of cushion.)
raven
@ThresherK (GPad): Mr Wrigley and George Halas had an agreement on rent and concessions that last that 50 years. They sealed it with a handshake.
ETA The Illini and Northwestern played there and didn’t know until just before the game. They tried to solve it by changing the direction of the offense to go toward the correct sized endzone but it didn’t help if there was a defensive TD!

A bit quiet, but they’re also definitely a bit off in terms of positioning. I’m sure they also remember the injury to Lavezzi who broke his elbow going over the ad board. That was at Houston, at the Texans’ stadium.
That’s the big problem that the US faces when it bids for the World Cup: lots of high-capacity stadiums, but not ideally specced.

Half Court Football
BillCinSD
another dive from Messi, this time called as a foul and yellow for Aranguiz
Bostonian
Dude likes his cards. But players seem to like getting in his face. Wonder if there’s a connection.
raven
@Bostonian: Got his ass run into too!
Bostonian
@raven: his ass was in the way
Tripod
The Chicago Sting played in Wrigley, and they’ve had some international friendlies there as well. Narrow pitches (and probably not unrelated persistent infringement) are CONCACAF staples.
raven
Well shit, I’m gonna catch the end in the morning. Remind me to stay away from this blog!
Punchy
Game gunna end on luck-filled PKs. Bullshit.
Bostonian
Baldy lost his bearings there
BillCinSD
How did Funes Mori not get at least a yellow there
BillCinSD
great save by Bravo
SRW1
Ref needs to give himself a card for bringing Messi down!
Wyrm1
@BillCinSD:
Because the ref doesn’t want to send anyone off, so he’s going to ignore anything that would do that.
How about those saves in both directions.
BillCinSD
@Wyrm1: I didn’t think Funes Mori had a yellow, it was still a nasty challenge.
eta: the saves were top notch. Sanchez was pretty much done by the time he came off
Wyrm1
@BillCinSD:
Oops, I thought he was on a yellow. If he wasn’t then I have no idea why he wouldn’t give a card there.
BillCinSD
@Wyrm1: there have been so many yellows, it’s hard to keep track, so I could be wrong
BillCinSD
that was a dumb foul, said before the free kick
BillCinSD
Argentina has the long shot into the crowd down pat
pseudonymous in nc
Looking a bit weary now. Set pieces or mistakes in the last 5 min, or pens.
Wyrm1
This has been pretty awesome overall. Shame about the two red cards (I saw somewhere else that there was a kickout by the Argentine player on the second red, if so it wasn’t as bad).
BillCinSD
Chile playing for penalties and get there. I wonder if the coaches forgot they had the extra sub?
eclare
@BillCinSD: Hahaha…
BillCinSD
crappy penalty from Vidal and Messi returns the favor
BillCinSD
Castillo with the unsaveable rocket, good for his 5th cap, Mascherano does the same
Randinho
Wow. Meddi baggioed his penalty.
BillCinSD
save by Bravo on Biglia, one make for Chile to win two in a row … and Silva does it
SRW1
Another stepping stone in Messi’s unfulfilled national team career. Maybe they can console him with a finals MotM trophy.
philadelphialawyer
Good for Chile!
BillCinSD
@Randinho: pretty much and he didn’t even have a divine ponytail
Randinho
And again, Chile beats Argentina on penalties and another year withou a non-age restricted title for Argentina.
Mart
We need the return of the hand of God. Messi is almost, but not completely, enough on his own.
? Martin
Messi announced he’s retiring from international play. Wow.
