Some media-based arsehattery is too extreme to be overlooked. Everybody’s focused on the Democratic convention this week — including Bill O’Reilly, racist misogynist and hypercompetitive Bile Gland Walking. Michelle Obama’s deservedly lauded DNC speech spurred O’Reilly to stretch his ‘talent’ even to the point of challenging Donald Trump for the Worst Person of the Week award…

That last tweet is a spin on the MRAs ‘Mens Rights Advocates’ and their assaults on female game designers and other women last year: Actually it’s about ethics in gaming journalism… O’Reilley is just a louder, richer, more powerful version of the embittered otaku sending dick pics and SWAT teams to the women they feel have slighted their masculine superiority.

Why weren’t low wages and free market vouchers enough?
Washington didn’t trust the generosity of the kind masters?
Didn’t that sap the moral fibre of the nation?
O’Reilly condemned that commie Washington I hope. Or is the moral center of the planet, Fox News, already destroyed?
Baud
@gogol’s wife: Yeah, did Michelle even mention the quality of life of those slaves. All she said was that the White House was built by them. Even if Bill O. was historically correct, what difference does it make?
Cacti
There will always be a certain type of white person, like Bill O’Bigot, who needs to convince their conscience that human slavery was akin to an internship or work-study program, rather than forced, involuntary servitude under fear of corporal punishment or death.
slag
What he meant to say was: “Yeah, they were slaves, but at least at least there wasn’t any ‘craziness’, no slave ‘screaming, ‘M.F.-er, I want more iced tea’.” Very surprising how civil all that slavery was back then.
Baud
@Cacti: Good point. And the subtext is, they had it better than you do now.

So what I’m hearing is that Bill O’Reilly would happily be taxed at 100% so long as we fed and housed him. Let’s make that happen. We’ll even be generous and keep the whip and the noose out of the picture.

Seriously how does a human hold the idea that slightly more progressive taxation is an infringement too far on personal freedoms but slavery isn’t? Is it really that hard to denounce slavery?

THE DEMOCRATS ARE LED BY FUCKING GROWN-UPS, AND THE GOP IS LED BY AN ADOLESCENT CHEETO
Damon Young, 7/28/16
For as long as I’ve been aware of American politics and the differences — real and perceived — between our two major parties, I’ve also been aware that the GOP has been touted as the party for grown-ups. For serious (White) men and the women those serious (White) men were married to. The solid and sober and solemn oak trees of America, that stood stubbornly and valiantly steady while the winds of social change swayed anything unfortunate enough to be unsettled. No, you would not find many new ideas floating around them. Or platforms. Or concepts. Or even new types of people. In fact, not only would you not find these things, they’d be openly antagonistic towards them, regarding them as distractions. Weeds. Flotsam. But at least — at the very least — their performative grownassness was reliably reliable.
Yet, as I’ve watched both the RNC and the DNC over the past week and a half, listening to each party’s litany of speakers and celebrities and alphas, one theme has been a bit more stark and unambiguous than the rest: The Democrats are led by grown-ups. Which is something the Republicans can no longer say about themselves after collectively deciding to rally behind a half-baked soufflé of analog cucumbers.
Regardless of what you say about Hillary Clinton — and there are many, many, many, many uncomplimentary things you could say about her (and be right) — you can not deny that she’s a serious woman. With a serious career. And serious ideas. Who has devoted her life to doing serious things. And who is comfortable in a room with equally serious people. Basically, she’s a fucking grown up. As is our President and Vice President. And Hillary’s husband, the former President. All men who could and should be criticized and held accountable for decisions they’ve made. But all fucking grown ups.

Minority Dem delegates frustrated with ‘Bernie or Bust’
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — As most Democrats rally around Hillary Clinton, the lingering “Bernie or Bust” movement is stirring frustration at the party’s convention among delegates of color, who say they’re upset at the refusal of the Vermont senator’s most fervent backers to fall in line.
“I am so exhausted by it,” said Danielle Adams, a black Clinton delegate from North Carolina. “I think there are undercuts of privilege that concern me.”
Adams is among those who say the “Never Hillary” crowd, a group that is largely younger and white, isn’t considering the struggles black Americans still face every day. And, they argue, how the nation’s ethnic and racial minorities may be affected by a Donald Trump presidency.
Rep. Cheryl Brown, a California delegate from San Bernardino who is black, condemned what she called the “aggressive” behavior of some Sanders delegates, saying they jumped on tables and shoved people at the state’s hotel the night that Sanders moved that the convention nominate Clinton by acclamation.
“I think here at the convention, it’s been exacerbated by the way they are treating people,” she said. “I haven’t had that happen with any of the African-American Bernie supporters.”

MSNBC’s Tamron Hall lays waste to DNC protesters for shouting down John Lewis
David Edwards DAVID EDWARDS
28 JUL 2016 AT 13:17 ET
Protesters at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia shouted down civil rights icon John Lewis while he was being interviewed by MSNBC’s Tamron Hall on Thursday.
Although the Georgia congressman’s introduction was met with cheers, things quickly turned ugly when Hall asked about Hillary Clinton’s historic nomination.
…………………
“I can’t ignore there are a couple of people in our audience that have yelled things,” Hall said, pointing to the crowd. “Some of them have been ugly and vitriolic, others have been their beliefs in democracy and that Bernie Sanders does not get the shake that they believe that he deserves.”
“You were beaten within an inch of your life,” she observed. “You’ve seen democracy or the battle for civil rights at its ugliest. How do you communicate to those who choose to speak civilly and not violently toward you here that there’s something greater at risk here if Donald Trump becomes the president in your eyes?”

It’s a key component of the Lost Cause version of history. They desperately want to believe that slavery was basically paternalistic, with black slaves who were basically incapable of looking after themselves being watched over by generally benevolent owners. Yes, Django is cartoonish and wouldn’t be effective in my hypothetically stated goal.
It was snark. Notice the part in my original comment about how he could have a comfortable chair? That’s my point, that I was talking about something objectively awful and the incidental details around it don’t really change the awfulness of being kidnapped, strapped down and forced to watch anything. I read a book that was the diary of a slaveholder. There were many eye-opening passages though little attention is paid to the brutality. The part that struck me was the banality of evil. I’ve personally argued with a dipshit at a bar who was basically saying what O’Reilly is saying in 2014 and yes, I was yelling by the end of it and walked out of the bar.
The moron’s argument (I established that the person had not read a history book in their adult life and made a point of it) was based on the “fact” that the slave owner treated his slave better than his kids, or viewed the slave as more “valuable”. That’s where Bill O’Reilly is going with that argument – that they had to treat their property well, to get them to work (as if they didn’t just beat them instead).
Honestly, I think the guy (mid to late 20’s) was taught this “benign slavery” concept in high school – in Texas. He either didn’t understand my hostile reaction at first or pretended not too.

I get why DU bugs you since it’s kind of like making a Bruce Willis action picture about Dachau, but he actually was careful to use stuff he got from authentic slave narratives, and said he read even more horrifying stuff that even he couldn’t think of using.

Just watching Tony Goldwyn speaking from Independence Hall. As he was talking about the people (representing specific generations) who helped make America a more perfect union, he went from Frederick Douglass and William Lloyd Garrison to Rosa Parks. It was a little jarring to me (as a historian). I wish Ida B Wells and WEB Dubois (Hello, Progressive Era) were included more often in the chronology of the civil rights movement as well as Alice Paul in the chronology of women’s suffrage.

Gah I don’t have the letter text at home that I wanted to post on this topic. There is a letter Abigail Adams wrote at the end of November 1800 just after she moved into the White House basically describing the slaves that were working on the White House which was still under construction. Basically she said among other things, that they were starving, doing all the work, and doing it while their masters profited from their labor. She didn’t even hint that their condition was anything other than abysmal.
ET
Found it
The effects of Slavery are visible every where; and I have amused myself from day to day in looking at the labour of 12 negroes from my window, who are employd with four small Horse Carts to remove some dirt in front of the house. the four carts are all loaded at the same time, and whilst four carry this rubish about half a mile, the remaining eight rest upon their Shovels, Two of our hardy N England men would do as much work in a day as the whole 12, but it is true Republicanism that drive the Slaves half fed, and destitute of cloathing, or fit for [Mayfa]re, to labour, whilst the owner waches about Idle, tho his one Slave is all the property he can boast, Such is the case of many of the inhabitants of this place.
For more see the entire letter.
nutella
Although we’re all talking about O’Reilly’s outrageous claim that the slaves were well-fed, he was most upset that Michelle O said that the White House had been built by slaves because that left out the other, non-slave workers. In other words, he said ‘what about the white menz?!?’ because some of the workers were paid white men and Michelle O did not give them any credit.
It’s the Mediocre White Man attitude: everything is about him and other white men. Even mentioning any other group is a grave insult.
