Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The revolution will be supervised.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

The press swings at every pitch, we don’t have to.

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

There are no moderate republicans – only extremists and cowards.

Roe is not about choice. It is about freedom.

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

If you cannot answer whether trump lost the 2020 election, you are unfit for office.

White supremacy is terrorism.

The line between political reporting and fan fiction continues to blur.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

When we show up, we win.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Celebrate the fucking wins.

If you voted for Trump, you don’t get to speak about ethics, morals, or rule of law.

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

I spent a year and a half investigating the Clinton Foundation and all I got was this lousy t-shirt.

***Update***

OK, enough Clinton-Trump for now. You know what this blog needs? A pug named Dumpling.

Treat?

Max and Dumpling

Crap, I’m out of treats.

So I was already overwhelmed by having to buy a new washer and a new dishwasher in the last month. Now I’ve signed up for the local energy programs that offer free analysis and many rebates for energy upgrades, including furnaces, water heaters (hello, tankless), insulation upgrades, air sealing, whole house fan and crawl space conditioning, and it goes on.

I’m excited, but there are so many decisions to make before the end of the year. Because if Trump is elected or if somehow my statehouse flips, guarantee these incentives will evaporate.

If we had a reasonable congress, these types of energy measures and rebates could be nationwide. Don’t boo. Vote.

Depending on where you live, a tankless water heater may not be such a wise choice depending on what the ground temperature is-especially during the winter. Also, you better do some research, as some lines/models are notorious for reliability issues.

@schrodinger’s cat: I bought this one, Whirlpool Cabrio. I thought it fit my needs pretty well. But if you’re doing a lot of laundry, you might to get one that’s a bit more energy efficient. Mine is middle of the road, but the reviews are good. Price was unbeatable, it was on sale for less $399

I went HE top loader (without agitator) because I didn’t feel a front loader fit well in my narrow laundry room. Also, with a top loader, it’s efficient but you can also stop a load and add things while it’s washing. I end up doing that constantly. Can’t do that with a front loader.

I always loved Pugs even if technically they aren’t dogs. (If you can punt it, it’s not a dog).

I did have a bad experience about 7 years back when an elderly neighbor called me frantic because her Pug wasn’t moving after some time in the park. I found the poor thing dead on her passenger seat. Pugs don’t take heat well, sadly. She was crushed and passed away around six moths after that.

And don’t judge me! If you’ve never wanted to punt a dog, you’ve never owned a dog!

So last Thurs. I was dx’d with a small (3mm) brain aneurysm, and was told I’d been referred to neurosurgeon Dr. X. Checking online, all info said that small an aneurysm is no threat depending somewhat on its location, but should at least be monitored. (A minor aneurysm is like a minor heart attack; it’s defined as an event that happens to someone else ?). Midday Friday called his office and left my contact info on his scheduling voicemail. No response. Monday am repeated process. Got response “Who are you? We have nothing.” Left 2 messages with my PCP: what’s up, pls contact me and the neuro. No response. This am waited till 10:30am, nothing. Called PCP, waited to talk live to front desk: “Hi this is p.a., what’s up? If I don’t hear from my doc [actually a PA-C] I’m coming there in person and you don’t want that.” Got call from PA-C in half hour, he said if I came in they’d call police. Laughed my ass off. Told him he could take me, all he’d have to do is hit me on the head. Asked WTF was going on. He claimed he’d called the neuro Thurs. I said they know nuttin’. “I’ll call again.” Neuro office called me 11:30, could I come in for 1pm appointment? Sure thing. Meeting, no present danger, CT scan in 6 months. Sorry we ‘lost’ referral.
Moral of story? IDK. Threat of violence can be effective? Does concentrate the mind.

Yes! Apparently Kubrick suspected that Sellers deliberately injured himself to avoid playing Kong, because he was having trouble figuring out the character. Slim Pickens is perfect in the role, so not a big loss.

I can’t remember which critic it was (maybe Danny Peary), but I remember one saying that having Sellers play Kong would have thrown the film off-balance, because in two of the three locations, he plays the (ineffectual) voice of reason, which is why it’s such a funny surprise when he turns out to be Strangelove, too. If we’d already seen him as Kong, seeing him as Strangelove wouldn’t be as funny.

If you watch carefully, there’s a take in the War Room after Strangelove comes in where the actor playing the Russian ambassador starts laughing and has to turn away until he’s able to compose himself.

@p.a.: A 3mm aneurysm is much scarier sounding to me than my wee little 3mm pituitary tumor “teeny tiny” is I swear to g*d how a doc (we’ve become buds!) described it. I’d be a basket case over your dx.

I am, however, an overachiever. The CT was to look for the tumor, and finding the tumor turned out the be the good news. The demylenation that explained some previously random symptoms was more troubling. But, MS is a condition that qualifies for a medical bud card. Or as a doc told me a while back: “there’s some very robust data about the efficacy for MS leg pain [and other symptoms]. It’s not legal here, of course, but I know you know people…” Now it’s legal here.

I spent the afternoon doing phone bank work at a Hillary office. They gave me a stapled set of pages with name, addr, age, sex, phone. A set of Democratic registered voters.

I called several pages of folks, many no answer/machine. Of all the people I actually spoke to, 100% were already planning to vote for Hillary Clinton. Many were excited and enthused to vote for Hillary Clinton, and either had already volunteered or were planning to work for her.

100% – I batted 1.000 on the afternoon/evening. What a boost that was !!! And these were all people in West Virginia, now competing with Alabama for reddest state in the election!!

So I do think much of the dismay is a result of rat-fucking on the national Press level… lying about the polls, what tiny movements in the polls means for Hillary, etc. She’s ahead, has always been ahead, and is pulling farther ahead. So I’m gonna work harder!!

    Starting tomorrow!!

Also hit up the ActBlue donation button, split among 16 candidates, so my in-box is filling up faster than I can unsubscribe. I tell them, be happy with the money, I can’t volunteer for everyone running, so long for now! Then I hit that unsubscribe button.

@p.a.: But not every HMO is narrow. Too damn many are, but not all.

Broad HMOs seem to be concentrated in large Metro areas with competing hospitals. We switched (due to job change) from a nearly universal PPO to a broad HMO; the choice at the new company was “give us the list of your doctors and we’ll find a plan”. All of our doctors at our local hospital are covered; as are all of the founders’ at their suburban hospital.

I’d priced these plans at the Exchange; the broad HMOs are in the Gold range hereabouts. The silvers varied widely in width; we could have found a plan with all of our doctors, but not all of the other employees’ doctors. And vice versa.

UPDATE: Keith Lamont Scott Identified as Disabled Black Man Shot Dead by N.C. Police While Reading in Car

A disabled black man has died at the hospital after being shot by a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer Tuesday afternoon on Old Concord Road in University City, a subdivision of Charlotte, NC.

Police said they were searching for someone who had outstanding warrants when they saw a man with a gun leave a vehicle. The victim was not the subject of the search, said Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Kerr Putney.

According to police reports, the man, who has not been named, returned to his vehicle. When they approached the man, they claim he “posed an imminent deadly threat to the officers” and one of them opened fire. An eyewitness told the victim’s daughter that a Taser was used on her father, then he was shot at least three times.

@p.a.: I am the first and loudest to insist our healthcare should be automatic, but having faced a similar development I found it helpful to lean on the PCP and just as importantly PCP’s staff. Don’t leave that first appointment until you witness the next one scheduled. It sucks that we could easily improve outcomes for a lot of people by smarter coverage, but in the meantime having a strong self or support goes a long way.

@Aleta: Neuro said they do disappear. Have not seen that info online. He has an excellent rep: my cousin is an anesthesiologist, and made some calls to a’s who worked with him to check him out. They, and OR nurses, she says, are best references on docs.

My good friend just had a small back surgery and had a neurosurgeon (a brain surgeon) do it instead of an orthopedic. It sounded like a good idea to me to have someone that sensitive be her surgeon.
