Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Today in our ongoing national embarrassment…

The Giant Orange Man Baby is having a bad day.

The arc of the moral universe does not bend itself. it is up to us to bend it.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

We can’t confuse what’s necessary to win elections with the policies that we want to implement when we do.

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Anne Laurie is a fucking hero in so many ways. ~ Betty Cracker

You cannot love your country only when you win.

Mediocre white men think RFK Jr’s pathetic midlife crisis is inspirational. The bar is set so low for them, it’s subterranean.

Jack Smith: “Why did you start campaigning in the middle of my investigation?!”

Hey hey, RFK, how many kids did you kill today?

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

Let there be snark.

With all due respect and assumptions of good faith, please fuck off into the sun.

“I was told there would be no fact checking.”

The line between political reporting and fan fiction continues to blur.

He really is that stupid.

Only 38% of women think Donald Trump has the temperament to be President, 55% say he does not

    Sigh…ugh come on white people.

    @ppppolls
Even among white voters the debate was basically a draw, with Trump only ahead 47/45:

There was a Trump sign at the entrance to my subdivision today. It was on property which belongs to the subdivision with the sign with the name of the subdivision and not an individual. After the debate my wife, daughter and I went and took down the sign. I left a note which said, “Not everyone in this subdivision is a racist POS. Get your sign out of here!”

I listened to the first hour and a half or so of the debate and then had to take care of some personal business. I got home after the debate was over and Trump was walking out of the spin room(??!)

The pundits are nuts. I heard Chuck Todd of NBC whine that the American people were losers because the candidates did not discuss the issues. Well, during the part I heard, Clinton was clear on aspects of her tax and economic policy, while Trump sputtered and trotted out his stump speech chestnuts.

Clinton was not only prepared to deal with policy questions she was prepared to deal with Trump. And she was able to include the conclusions from other experts about his proposals without calling him an ignorant liar.

I should not be surprised that some are calling this a draw even though some pundits and even Trump’s own strategists are saying that Trump did not prepare for the debate.

I think that Clinton was able to reveal Trump for what he is, a small minded bigot who doesn’t have the brains to publicly step away from his own worst ideas. What viewers and listeners do with this remains to be seen.

BTW, Trump’s attempt to to proudly justify his birher was uncomfortable, strange, pathetic. He can’t see how alienating and insulting his stance is, both in initially embracing such insanity, and in thinking that he can simply drop it when it no longer suits his purposes, and everyone will meekly fall in line.

I think so too. His campaign broadcasted that afterward. Trumps problem is that this didn’t work, and I don’t think he has a ‘more presidential’ mode to go to. He definitely has a ‘more asshole’ mode, though, and it’s a mode that he’s very good at. The best strategy for them may be to crosscheck her early on and try and take her off her game. I think it’ll fail in two ways – one, New Yorkers appreciate a colossal asshole, but I can’t think of a swing state that does, and I think Clinton will go into the next debate more confident than she was tonight. Trump knew who would show up, but Clinton didn’t. Now she does, she knows she can take him down, and she’ll be better prepared next time.

Compared to the reversal from the first Obama/Romney rally, Obama had a different mode to go to – one that the public would respect. Trump doesn’t. I think next debate goes no better and likely goes worse.

@nonynony: Recent poll averages I’ve seen show Trump having a hard time getting much more than 50 percent solid support among Whites. The hunt for the missing White voters from the Romney election not turning up much.

Probably too many of them damn college degree eggheads among the Whites these days. Look for (edit: even more) GOP plotting revenge on higher ed if Trump loses.

    @piratedan:

just took a peek over at RedState, they think it was a draw…. sighs

Redstate is largely anti-Trump, and has been for most of this election cycle. So it’s probably not the best place for one seeking schadenfreude and bitter tears from wingnuts devastated by Trump’s performance.

@Adam L Silverman: I didn’t read the whole thread, I just got to the point where the guy writing the article said, “well they both talked about how people who are illegals shouldn’t be able to get guns, only Hillary talked about gangs and Trump talked about scary immigrant terrorists but they both agreed that these folks shouldn’t have guns and neither should people on the no-fly list. And they probably said some other stuff but I was pretty drunk by then and I think I may have just passed out.”

ETA: But I do plan to go back and read the comments. I’m just not sure it’s wise to do it just before bed-time.

Trump’s debate incompetence a slap in the face to his supporters

It hasn’t bothered them any up until now, and there’s been plenty of evidence – why would it begin to worry them now? As far as I can tell, their logic (such as it is) goes like this.

Hey, we don’t like the way things have been going, what with a black imposter in the White House and queers getting married and suchlike. Let’s put a rich twelve year old ADHD Hitler Youth inductee in charge! What could go wrong?

@Miss Bianca: I just read it. Manifesto Guy didn’t show up – probably after his bed time. The other guy did show up. You should have seen this morning’s thread when they were speculating about the Houston shooter. Got real quiet once it came out he was wearing a WW II ear Wermacht uniform with a NAZI arm band, had NAZI paraphernalia in his car, and more NAZI paraphernalia at his home. Not even an attempt to do the “NAZIs are liberals because it was National Socialism”.

Even among white voters the debate was basically a draw, with Trump only ahead 47/45:

Something seriously wrong with these “white voters”. Despicable doesn’t half describe them if they think Trump should be President.

@BethanyAnne: I just followed a couple of blogs – could not bring myself to watch anything to do with Trump. Guess that there undecided is the 1/100 black person who would vote for Trump – seems to me someone in the Trump camp is paying these people to be so obviously against themselves – or else – as has been said – they are despicable.
