Mine are arrayed over two floors of this house in whichever spot they decided to sack out in and two are snoring loudly. The cats are all up in their third floor retreat, presumably also sleeping. I’m about to join them in slumber. G’night all.

Soul dog here is sitting up wondering if there will be any more food today.
Bailey has decided my lap is the place for her. I’m indulging her for the next week or so, until she’s secure here. Bixby is unhappy as that is his place (in his mind) while the cats are super pissed because once Bixby outgrew the whole lap thing (and by outgrew, I mean hit 160 lbs and wanted to hog the couch) they had their rightful place back on the couch.
There has been lots of hissing, growling and grumbling. #neveradullmomentatmyhouse

This is really good. Unfortunately, large numbers of people who should read it probably won’t.
Luna does the same thing. She is six-and-a-half years old, and yet she still cannot hold her right ear as erect as she can hold the left ear. It looks charmingly derpy.

I just got home after a week spent in Michigan as my brother in law passed from cancer; funeral, sitting Shiva, etc. My husband is now the last one left in his immediate family; their dad passed in May. He’s still there helping the widow, who is a wreck but he flies home Wednesday.
It was such a relief from the intensity of the situation to catch a few moments to read BJ while I was there, and being home in my favorite chair and doing the same is a total tonic for me; thanks for ya’all being here and being BJ.
Alice the Dog is asleep by my wife’s chair. Phoebe the Cat is feigning sleep on the couch while working out the details of her 3:25 a.m. storming of the bed and frontal assault on my feet.
@StringOnAStick: glad to hear you get some comfort from this community of oddballs, pet lovers, and cranks. Sorry to hear that your/his family are suffering so much this year!

Eek. That is a little more nostril than I needed at this time of night. Also I miss having a dog.
@StringOnAStick: Hugs to you and yours. It is amazing how during some of the most stressful times the last 8 years, this bunch of crazies with their stories, pets, and opinions helped me cope. So glad it’s the same for you.
So Bailey has these GLAM eyelashes that I swear I’ve never seen on a dog before. I mean, I’m envious they are so thick and long. I’ll post pictures at some point. Anyone else have a GLAM dog?
@Aleta: Yeah, I have to admit, it’s pretty sweet how she curls up on my lap. She seems so delicate compared to Bixby – but really it’s 92 lbs of elbows and knees that she needs to grow into.

@StringOnAStick: Condolences to you and to your husband. Being the last one left must be a lonely, strangely dislocating feeling.
@Mike J: I know! Our defense should get damned big bonuses for the way they hung on all game, and I don’t know what the hell was up with our offense. With both kickers missing gimmee FGs, maybe the stadium was cursed.

Thanks everyone. It really helped to have a community I recognized when everything around us was jagged edges and raw emotions. So good to be home and in our bed. I know he’s not here right now, but I read Prescott Cactus’s guest posts on hospice, knowing this death was coming soon, and they really helped. I hope he sees my thanks here.
Off to work at 6am tomorrow and I’m exhausted. Everyone have a fine new day when the sun greets you tomorrow.

We learned today that we lost a research colleague due to an accident in the field. We always knew how dangerous the area he was working, yet it is still impossible to put together and believe.
@The Pale Scot: I don’t have a problem with, and indeed have a serious craving for, hugs, but the sort of unintentional physical touching you get in crowds can be distressing; a five hour flight next to someone who overflows their seat can be a nightmare. However, I form emotional connections to animals in ways I just can’t with humans, so I can understand this kid’s situation. Pets are an essential part of my life, particularly since my now ex-wife walked out.
That is a little more nostril than I needed at this time of night.
Did you know that dogs’ nostrils are as individual as human fingerprints?
In fact, noseprints are how some canine registration organizations identify dogs. It’s not as easy as you’d think, convincing a dog not to squirm away while you cover his breathing holes with a scrap of special paper, however briefly!

Our two rescue doggies have settled into a good routine since we got Minnie ten months ago. We get about a half hour wrestling match each evening, complete with growls, barred teeth, and lots of doggie slobber. Added bonus, dog hair all over the carpet. Wouldn’t miss it for the world.
Phoebe the Cat is feigning sleep on the couch while working out the details of her 3:25 a.m. storming of the bed and frontal assault on my feet.
My elderly kitty Zoe is rallying from chronic kidney disease, and now likes to stand with her front paws on my shin-bones around 7 am to indicate her desire to be fed. She’s a funny little one. Also glad that she has better timing than Phoebe.

@Steeplejack: Thank you for your musical profferings, among other things. I really enjoy this late night bi-coastal link (for me) that is different from commentary – a gift of music from your end that I enjoy while I attend to my late night thises and thats on my end. Much appreciated….
Pets-wise, Ocean the wiggle cat will often ask me to sit on the sofa or recliner so that she can hop up onto my chest and lie down with me. She will not sit still, though: she’ll wiggle (hence the name) to one side, then the next, purring madly as she does so, before finally grouching about something and hopping off.
I miss Tehya the pretty kitty. She would cuddle for reals, for 30-minute intervals, just calm and content.

@TaMara (HFG): My previous male Cocker, James, also had astonishinly long eyelashes. Unfortunately, when he was about six or seven years old, a groomer cut them short and though they grew back some, they never achieved the length of his glory days.

@WaterGirl: @karen marie My dog always comes back with lashes and whiskers shaved. We’ve asked them not to do it (I think shaving his whiskers disorients him, and he needs his eyelashes!), but they say they can’t avoid it. He’s a poodle, so he does have a lot of coat and muzzle hair around those places. (We knew nothing about poodle grooming when we got him out of his previous bad situation.) Otherwise it’s a caring place that is not exorbitantly priced, but I’d like to find a way to preserve his ‘feelers.’

I like a good lap cat; like when you have to get up to reach the remote, or your coffee cup, and they refuse to budge: you have to sort of waddle to the table and back while holding them in place.
Once, I had gotten settled in my chair with book and mug and both cats were in the bedroom sacked out on the bed. I called one: “Alice, want some lap time?” I know she didn’t understand me but she knew her name, came in and jumped up. The other stayed put: I didn’t call HER, and she wasn’t at all curious as to what Alice was getting that she wasn’t. That still amazes me.
