Friday Night Open Thead: Calm Yourselves

2. Trump will lose. @jbouie called it in June (altho he forgot to include "women" in the firewall. (Men!)) https://t.co/MVtzB9oBIb

— EricaGrieder (@EricaGrieder) October 28, 2016

I wholeheartedly endorse Erica Grieder’s thesis here:

3. I know @jbouie is right bc *this is exactly why Mitt Romney lost*. Here's my post-mortem from 2012. https://t.co/vciVQWMTd8 pic.twitter.com/3gMlzNaxDT

— EricaGrieder (@EricaGrieder) October 28, 2016

7. It's easy to lose sight of that bc the failures are so visible. As a result #2016 is destroying our confidence in each other & ourselves.

— EricaGrieder (@EricaGrieder) October 28, 2016

9. And since that sounds a little woo-woo, let me point out that it is not. GDP grew 1.4% in the second quarter & 2.9% in the third.

— EricaGrieder (@EricaGrieder) October 28, 2016

10. What changed between Q2 & Q3? Hmm, maybe it was our collective post-RNC/DNC consensus: "wtf, lol. Ok, Clinton it is"

— EricaGrieder (@EricaGrieder) October 28, 2016

Nothing important has changed since last night — the Repubs, and their abettors like James Comey, remain venal; Hillary Clinton is chugging along to become our first female President; and we Democrats, perennial eeyores that we be, are in more danger from our own panic than any outside forces.

Eleven days (quickly becoming ten!) until this election is finally over, and we can get on with our lives.

I’m not even sure this could have been called a nothingburger. It seriously went from OMG FBI IS RE-OPENING CLINTON EMAIL CASE to Oh, wait, it’s not actually related to that within, what, 30 minutes? An hour, at most?

Here, watch a stuck raccoon being rescued from a tank. It’s a more productive use of your time. Or go Hillary’s route and watch some cat GIFs.

If this “new emails!” story freaked you out, it’s time to step away from the election news.

It’s time…time to turn off Fox and put down the remote. Time to find some real news sites besides Breitbart and Drudge. No more lies.”

@West of the Rockies (been a while): Do you all suppose a knucklehead like Matthews knows he’s called Tweety,

absolutely, he strikes me as the type who googles himself constantly, and asks his wife, his kids and at least one assistant what they hear/read people say about him

, and is regarded as easily manipulated by conservatives

that’s not as easy. Remember in the Plame trial, when it came out that Mary Matalin, speaking for Cheney, said that she and that thing both thought Tweety was too tough (Veep hates Chris, or some such), and thought Tim Russet was a much easier interview. I actually thought Punkinhead’s reputation might suffer from that. Then he died.

You are depraved, what the fuck is wrong with you, conjuring up that type of image. You owe us all for therapy.
Anyway today was Bizzaro world on msnbc.
    – Morning Joke – highly critical of Comey, said the letter was bullshit and unfair to Clinton, still injected a shot at her, saying the majority in the polls thought she should have been indicted.
    – Marl Halpern – also critical of Comey, feels he has been wrong in his handling from the get go, he felt there was cause to prosecute, but since he chose not to, they should have just said no charges and left it at that, no presser, and definitely no letter today.
Rick Tyler and Mike Murphy – both said it would energize some of the Trump bas who were demoralized, but it will have only a marginal effect.
Tweety – the end of the world, gives Trump a chance. Why is Hillary lying about the letter going only to republicans when everyone knows it went to both sides. And why is she denying that the separate investigation is the Wiener one when we know it is. Basically why is the lying liar lying.

Everyone except for Tweety took contrary positions. They all agreed that the impact on the presidential will be minimal, but they think that it will save the house and senate. Someone on Chuckles program did point out that the fact that it took something like this for Trump to finally have a good day says how badly his campaign is going.
Fortunately there were no Mrs Greenspan sightings while I was watching.

I’m thinking we got the Senate. NH, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Indiana (Bayh – bleech,) Wisconsin, and Missouri or North Carolina or may be even both (fingers crossed) should flip.

House is a harder nut. Definitely pick up seats. The odds are long against a flip but I haven’t given up hope.

I guess there was a homeless woman ‘guarding’ Trump’s star and got into some chest bumping with a heavy set Latino guy(from what I saw, the woman was the aggressor) and she ended up falling down. Several folk in the crowd(there’s always a crowd there it’s near the Kodak theater) tore up the woman’s pro-Trump homemade signs. The couple was all “and she LIES, all the time”, and homeless dude was informing them about the Guccifer links. I dunno, maybe zombies really are a thing, much as I ignore that whole genre. Even here in Sonoma, 3 out of 4 customers there were off the rails completely. On my way out, the woman was talking about people “finding it in their hearts to….” and I didn’t hear the rest – and grateful that I didn’t. Sigh….eleven more days, and then maybe the loons will retreat to their lairs to lick their wounds.

He was obviously a strong candidate in his own right, so I wasn’t settling. As it turned out, unsurprisingly, Republicans did to Obama what they would have done to a HRC admin from 2008 to 2016, so this go around I have taken the issue out of the equation completely. Republicans aren’t going after Clinton with both barrels loaded because they really think she personally is dishonest/wrong, it is has become their default position. This is in fact why Trump is the perfect Republican.

If you are freaking out just consider the worst possible case; Trump wins.

Do you all think establishment is going to be pleased with a man who they know is an idiot, leading a whipped up mod of buffoons and has enemy list is mile long that includes the establishment itself? Of course not, the establishment wants stability so the very forces that always frustrate us progressives will be turned on Trump with far, far more passion.

The United States is a long running democracy, it survived a truly horrible Civil War, we’re still the sole super power, in other words we are not 1920’s Germany. We are not a traditionally authoritarian state, we are not historically the victim of choice for the Great Powers, we did not have our preferred form of government toppled and a new one imposed on us, we do not have mobs of outraged war vets in the streets fighting each other. Please keep in mind to a 1920s German the “All Highest” Kaiser was the good old days.

Trump is no Hitler, nor is anyone else with him. One must forget the Hollywood nonsense about Hitler and remember Hitler went from a pauper who being an NCO in the army was as good anyone would have expected him to do, to the dictator of a major power and the conqueror of Europe. That is a man with tremendous ability and determination. Trump, on the other hand, major achievement in life is taking a fortune of money and squandering it.
