Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Their boy Ron is an empty plastic cup that will never know pudding.

Republicans would impeach Biden if he bit into a whole Kit Kat rather than breaking the sections apart.

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

Democrats have delivered the Square Deal, the New Deal, the Fair Deal, and now… the Big Joe Biden Deal.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

I’m just a talker, trying to find a channel!

The new republican ‘Pastor’ of the House is an odious authoritarian little creep.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

We’ll be taking my thoughts and prayers to the ballot box.

When we show up, we win.

Consistently wrong since 2002

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

Republicans in disarray!

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

Let there be snark.

We’re not going back!

Boeing: repeatedly making the case for high speed rail.

I was confident that someone would point it out and thought why not me.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

I’m more Christian than these people and I’m an atheist.

Trump’s legal defense is going to be a dumpster fire inside a clown car on a derailing train.

Late Evening Open Thread: The Country’s in the Very Best of Hands…

I mentioned a while back, when cornered in comments by a certain unnamed musical fanatic, that other than the Batman: the Brave and the Bold animated episode The MusicMeister, the only musical I actually like is Lil Abner. Largely because it was the only thing to watch one night while I was stuck on the couch in my house in Scotland with a sinus and respiratory infection. We only had three channels and at least one of the other ones was showing snooker… So Lil Abner it was. Given the events of today, I think these two numbers from the Lil Abner movie are appropriate.

And:

Have at it…

If I had known an open thread was coming up, I would have waited a couple of minutes to post my comment, and not messed up Richard’s thread.

    Cross posted from downstairs:

Off topic, but may I just say holy fucketty fuck!? Just hearing the audio of T at one of the inaugural ballz and he has so far said that he loves everyone in the room “because you all voted for me, right?” and reiterated his hatred of the media.

The man is not well, not well at all. “Why can’t all people be like that? Six questions and six congratulations.” “Did you hear my speech today?” “Even the media finally admitted that the crowds were massive.” He is sick in the head.

@efgoldman: I don’t like musicals. I do like opera. If you count either/both Ingmar Bergman’s and Kenneth Branagh’s film version of The Magic Flute as musicals, then that’s two. Camelot is okay, but I’d rather either read the various literary forms or watch Excalibur.

Jackie was the most classically chic First Lady of the last 100 years and Nancy was the most glamorous. But Michelle Obama managed to beat them both on both fronts: chic AND glamorous, at a level no one had seen before from a First Lady.

@Mary G: I liked this from TLo’s FLOTUS retrospective too:

[W]hat strikes us most when we look at the span of dresses and separates she wore over the last eight years, is how hard she was working while she wore them. These were her work clothes. They got more and more adventurous over time … but they were always in service to some goal or message she was trying to get across. She almost never gets credit for this, but she really was the first First Lady to take an executive’s approach to the job. Hillary was a lawyer-FLOTUS through and through, but Michelle thought like a goal-oriented manager and you can see it in her style approach.

  48. 48.

    Mary G

    January 21, 2017 at 12:30 am

    @MaryRC: Yeah, and this too:

Of course her gowns were rightly celebrated (and will be further lauded in a post later today, along with one on her outerwear), but for us, she was always at her best in day dresses and separates. What struck us most, looking over this collection of pictures from the last 8 years, is just how hard she worked in her job. Gowns and coats are for standing and waving, but Michelle Obama spent eight years talking to kids, reading to kids, hugging military families, giving speeches, making talk show appearances, advocating for her causes, decorating Christmas trees, going to graduations, meeting world leaders, rolling Easter eggs, boarding planes, handing out awards and receiving them – all in an array of stunningly bold and stylish dresses and separates.

    These were her work clothes.

On 22 November 1963, WLW Radio (700 AM) in Cincinnati had planned to air a program of music from the “Lil Abner” soundtrack at 1:30 PM ET. They did, in fact, start that program, after an NBC newscast they’d delayed from 1:00 PM, but before they got to the overture, they had a special bulletin that three shots had been fired at the President in Dallas.
