I mentioned a while back, when cornered in comments by a certain unnamed musical fanatic, that other than the Batman: the Brave and the Bold animated episode The MusicMeister, the only musical I actually like is Lil Abner. Largely because it was the only thing to watch one night while I was stuck on the couch in my house in Scotland with a sinus and respiratory infection. We only had three channels and at least one of the other ones was showing snooker… So Lil Abner it was. Given the events of today, I think these two numbers from the Lil Abner movie are appropriate.
And:
Have at it…

If I had known an open thread was coming up, I would have waited a couple of minutes to post my comment, and not messed up Richard’s thread.

I’ve never heard of this thing.

@efgoldman: I don’t like musicals. I do like opera. If you count either/both Ingmar Bergman’s and Kenneth Branagh’s film version of The Magic Flute as musicals, then that’s two. Camelot is okay, but I’d rather either read the various literary forms or watch Excalibur.
Manyakitty
@efgoldman: Hair, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Charlotte’s Web have been influential for me.

It’s been a long day. Have some Mittens. He has really big paws.

@Omnes Omnibus: You’d never heard Jubilation T Cornpone before? My favorite number from Lil Abner. Lil Abner also has Julie Newmar in it:

@Manyakitty: Charlotte’s Web is a cartoon. If its animated, I’m usually good with it.
Adam L Silverman
@efgoldman: Yep. Don’t do much for me.
Omnes Omnibus
@Adam L Silverman: I’d never been aware of the existence of this musical.

There’s a clip on Twitter of Lumpy dancing with Melanoma at the first dance. Pus sy grabber does not know.how.to dance. He has no rhythe unlike my POTUS who knew how to dance with Michelle and make it obvious that they were still in luurv.
Adam L Silverman
@Omnes Omnibus: Ahhh, okay. Now I’m tracking. As I’m sure you’re away, its been a bit of a long day around here.

Some of my fav movies are musical. All time fav: Sound of Music…modern favs… Chicago, Dreamgirls, Hairspray…and of course the Disney animated movies are essentially musicals…
Vheidi
since it’s open, did i miss notice on the bj calendar?
lamh36
@mai naem mobile:oh ya mean this…@TheSofiya
Melania’s face while dancing with Trump reminds me of the first time I went to the gynecologist
Adam L Silverman
@lamh36: Animated movies that are musicals are fine. Moana was great.
Adam L Silverman
@Vheidi: huh?
Adam L Silverman
@efgoldman: Again: no.

Getting a lot of rain in south Phoenix tonight. Hoping it will be clear for the march tomorrow morning, but I always love when we get rain in the desert. Today it seemed especially appropriate.
Germany and France, watch us tomorrow and hold strong! Please hold strong!

Adam – since you liked two Stubby Kaye numbers from Lil Abner, you might want to try Guys and Dolls. Unfortunately, “Sit Down, You’re Rocking the Boat” from the movie seems not to be on youtube.

Lord…me looking through the Michelle Obama fashion retrospective…and having to remind myself to NOT call her FLOTUS…

Speaking of the Melania…here she is smiling, dancing and twirling in the arms of…an unnamed Marine…she more animated dancing random Marine than she did with her dear loving husband…

Melania Trump twirls as she dances during the Armed Services Bal

@lamh36: all fantastic retrospectives, but omigod FLOTUS in the Versace gown in that last picture… Models would kill to look that beautiful!

@Adam L Silverman: In that case, give it a shot. Bear in mind it’s been part of my life since I was under 10 (I think). The soundtrack album opened into the barnyard from the movie. Plus, who doesn’t like Agnes Moorhead, Paul Lynde, Henry Gibson, and Debbie Reynolds?
It’s a deep dive into a cozy blanket.

@lamh36: You know I love me some TLo, and this is my favorite part of their Michelle Obama columns today:
They have decided not to cover Melania Trump.
Omnes Omnibus
@lamh36: Marines have better looking uniforms. Army dress uniforms look like marching band uniforms.
Adam L Silverman
@Manyakitty: I’ve seen it many times.
Adam L Silverman
@Omnes Omnibus: I remembered the hold outs when they made the switch to the current Class As and Bs. The folks that were going to make retirement before they had to wear them instead of the greens. But the new blue ones are okay, but a lot of gold piping and stripes everywhere. I’m convinced whoever came up with them watched one too many movies featuring the 19th Century cavalry coming over the hill to save the day.
Manyakitty
@Adam L Silverman: Okay then. Carry on.
Omnes Omnibus
@Adam L Silverman: I liked the WWII era pinks and greens.

@efgoldman: Speaking of Hamilmania, it’s probably old news, but I just saw L-MM on Hamilton on Drunk History (from November 29). Quite entertaining, and edumacashunal.
Cheers,

(Who notices that he didn’t mention Burr trying to set himself up as Emperor…)

Li’l Abner.
Post-pedantry, the Tangerine Torquemada’s Homeland, Homeland, Über Alles ‘speech’ was revolting, repulsive and retch worthy.
Seen during a panning shot of the crowds at a protest was someone holding a placard announcing “Witches Against Trump.” Lone smile of the day. Otherwise, good day to stay on WoW.

@Another Scott: Here comes sick-ass Hamilton on a flaming ship! Your ass will never be the same!
Adam L Silverman
@Omnes Omnibus: They made a bit of a comeback. Some of the desert three stripe used during the first few years of OIF had the disco collars.
NMgal
@Adam L Silverman: Awww, come on. Fiddler on the Roof! Great music, socially and historically relevant – and poignant – story adapted from Sholem Aleichem. What’s not to like?
Adam L Silverman
@NMgal: I’m just not a musical kind of guy. I like music. I like movies. I like cartoons. I like operas. I just don’t like musicals.
Omnes Omnibus
@efgoldman: I owned two sets of the greens, one set of blues, and probably 10 BDUs. I never bothered with the Blue Mess uniform – it looked silly unless one had six or seven medals and was career-oriented.
West of the Rockies (been a while)
@Adam L Silverman:
How about Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog? It’s sooo good. Joss Whedon material…
MaryRC
@Mary G: Can’t imagine Melania Trump doing any of those things, can you? Boarding planes, maybe ….
Omnes Omnibus
@Adam L Silverman: I generally concur. Opera makes sense because it is all music. A play or movie makes sense because people are talking – like people do. Musicals – why did he suddenly start singing? Who does that? I make an exception for Gigi because of Maurice Chevalier and Leslie Caron.
Another Scott
@Mingobat f/k/a Karen in GA: rofl. :-)
Having women play Hamilton and Burr was excellent, also too.

@Omnes Omnibus: Yup.
All of the lip syncing was amazingly tight, too.
I didn’t catch who he was talking with on his iPhone via FaceTime or whatever they call it these days. Someone from the Broadway show? (I haven’t seen the musical yet, but have the box set thing on the shelf…)
Cheers,

On 22 November 1963, WLW Radio (700 AM) in Cincinnati had planned to air a program of music from the “Lil Abner” soundtrack at 1:30 PM ET. They did, in fact, start that program, after an NBC newscast they’d delayed from 1:00 PM, but before they got to the overture, they had a special bulletin that three shots had been fired at the President in Dallas.

@lamh36: Melania’s expression, dancing with Lumpy, reminds me of Leia’s reaction to Jabba the Hut’s advances.

@lamh36: That clip might be the first time I have seen Melania Trump smile. Even in photo shoots, she always looks so grim.

Singing in the Rain was the only musical I could stand. But lately I have discovered pre code musicals. Murder At The Vanities,
Hips Hips Hooray, The Laughing Lieutenant, etc. The Music was not always great, but there was a sense of risque fun that was missing through most of the history of musicals.

Another Lil Abner fan! I started humming the song when I saw the title of this post.
