You dropped a bomb on me but you turned me on

CNN has a major hard-on about the bomb Trump just had dropped in Afghanistan.

The US military has dropped an enormous bomb in Afghanistan, according to four US military officials with direct knowledge of the mission.

A GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast Bomb (MOAB), nicknamed the “mother of all bombs,” was dropped at 7:32 pm local time Thursday, the sources said. A MOAB is a 21,600-pound, GPS-guided munition that is America’s most powerful non-nuclear bomb.

I guess I would have called that a 11 ton bomb, but then 21,600 pounds sounds more technical and much larger.

@Old Broad in California: if I may be pedantic (if not, I’ll take this over to LGM), it’s GAP Band, as the group is named after the Greenwood-Archer-Pine district in Tulsa, OK, which was once the most prosperous black area in the country (spoiler alert: angry white men burned it down). IIRC correctly, they were originally the Greenwood Archer Pine Band, but that was too long so they abbreviated it G.A.P., then at some point a lazy typist left out the periods.

My actual point is that white people should be forced to learn the history of the Greenwood Archer Pine district and consider how it relates to the way black people are still treated in this country.

@amygdala: Perhaps, but I just don’t like the waste. It’s a very expensive munition you use on appropriate targets, and I’m not sure they exist in Afghanistan now. Not that the Taliban and associates/rivals aren’t targets for our military, just that there aren’t likely enough high-value targets near each other for such a weapon to make it cost-effective. Or this could be Trump adding to his dividends from Defense investments….

It’s like the Malaysia 370 story which an unnamed CNN executive said was a “tremendous story that is completely in our wheelhouse.”

Similar to the CNN Film Reviews

A very large percentage of Americans, maybe even a majority, get their thrills from watching USA military drop bombs on people who aren’t even shooting back. And they’ve never shown any remorse for dropping them on people who aren’t military or terrorists of anything other than ordinary people going about their business.

This is a very sick culture and I’m at a loss to guess at the cure.

Actually, probably not. For tunnels or cave complexes, you should probably use a ground penetrator bomb, which would penetrate some 200 feet before exploding. .

In this case probably into the cave complex itself, if you used that correct ( GBU-57A ) ordinance.

    @Eric U.:

Why? What possible target would call for this munition?

Robert Farley over at LGM had this to say:

    1. There are tactical circumstances, even in Afghanistan, that would make the use of this weapon viable; large area with combination of above ground and shallow beneath ground structures.

    2. There are 1 mile radius circles of Afghanistan that contain no civilians. If an ISIS camp was located in one of these areas, then “war crime” is probably not useful terminology to describe.

    3. ISIS does appear to approach base development/construction differently than post-2001 Al Qaeda (or the Taliban, for that matter), so it’s not completely implausible that there was a real tactical justification for this weapon.

    4. This was not an MOP; that’s the penetrating weapon designed to destroy fortified, protected bunkers.

Only makes sense tactically if used to wipe out relatively widely distributed structures that are not very deeply entrenched. Hard to imagine a c130 lumbering over an active facility and not taking heavy fire, so the place may have been largely empty. Like the missile attack, likely just Trump showing who has the most beautiful bombs in a tactically meaningless display.
