On the Road is a weekday feature spotlighting reader photo submissions.
From the exotic to the familiar, whether you’re traveling or in your own backyard, we would love to see the world through your eyes.
Good Morning All,
This weekday feature is for Balloon Juicers who are on the road, travelling, etc. and wish to share notes, links, pictures, stories, etc. from their escapades. As the US mainland begins the end of the Earth day as we measure it, many of us rise to read about our friends and their transient locales.
So, please, speak up and share some of your adventures, observations, and sights as you explore, no matter where you are. By concentrating travel updates here, it’s easier for all to keep up-to-date on the adventures of our fellow Commentariat. And it makes finding some travel tips or ideas from 6 months ago so much easier to find…
Have at ’em, and have a safe day of travels!
Should you have any pictures (tasteful, relevant, etc….) you can email them to [email protected] or just use this nifty link to start an email: Start an Email to send a Picture to Post on Balloon Juice
And still no Poco!
From JRinWV, an amazing series of pictures. I’m including this big set today with part two coming Friday.
I’m sending a bunch of photos from our European trip, they’re shrunk some and detuned to be smaller, and compressed. These were all taken with a Panasonic Lumix FZ200 with a Leica F2.8 24-600mm zoom – well, actually, some may have been taken with my Andriod tablet toward the end of the trip. I blew up the charger when I got confused, the Android charger was OK with 220V and the Panasonic was not. So when I ran out the second battery, that was that.
They are all titled. The only cave paintings I photographed were at the replica Altamira II, not supposed to there, but we were way early, no one else was there, and it wasn’t the “real” cave, but accurate to the mm, our guide Dr Bahn knew the artists who painted it, a perfect copy.
There are many “signs” and symbols among the animals we can recognize.
I took 800+ photos, many dupes, edited and titled 260, and selected 42 to send you.
From Bilbao to Paris. Castles, museum shots, caves, scenery etc. I do have pix of a cave with formations instead of paintings if you think that would interest folks. Also more photos of “portable art” in museums, carvings and tools etc.Anyway, take a look, post things if they seem interesting to you. They all look OK to me as far as focus and exposure. The #80 photo of Atapuerca is an archaeological site of the Neanderthal man, and the stories about genetics common to Homo Sap and Neanderthal are based upon remains found there. The Spanish authorities put a big investment into this location, a railway cut abandoned when the mine it served played out, the geologist walking along the cut realized there were caves filled with “modern” sediments as the track was being pulled, the rest is history. There are more photos of that as well.
What a treasure – so, folks, what say you? Let’s give him some feedback and get some more pictures – I’d love to see the cave with formations!
Picture description note: I had some last-minute issues with easily including the description-to-picture, completely my own fault. Here’s the basic info for your reference:

The captions have me confused, also the pic of the Disney Hall with the bridge is confusing me.

Still fun!

Wonderful pictures JW! I’m ridiculously pleased to hear that they made a replica cave so the real one wouldn’t be damaged by the public, because I’ve seen the defacement of other antiquities elsewhere.

Caves! I like caves.
Spain! I like Spain.
Castles! I Like castles!
I really liked the Santillana Church. Now I have to go there and see what’s inside.
JPL
JW wonderful pictures and thank you for sharing.
Elizabelle
@ JW: beautiful photos. Thank you.
Musical accompaniment. Why yes, it is Steely Dan.

Amazing pictures! So nice to wake up to them! Poco (and his chauffeur!) arrived in Grifton, NC on Saturday after his chauffeur drove two days in solid rain. Poco feels strongly that that is the best kind of snoozing weather when on the road. Got a lot of work done at the house I grew up in Taking a break today from dust, pine tree pollen, and memories and heading to the beach place an hour away. Poco sends a giant sweep of his fluffy tail to his fans and will send coastal pictures at some point. Have a great day! (check in “juju” we are practically neighbors when I’m in Grifton. I’ll be in your hometown on errands next week!)

@Elizabelle:
I dig your style! Love me some Steely Dan…especially some of the more obscure songs. Maybe it’s my age, but I think almost everything they did holds up well. I still listen to Donald Fagen’s solo album from the early 1980’s. Blanking on the actual album’s name right now; the CD stays in a 25 disc player, so haven’t looked at the cover in awhile.

@Quinerly: If you squint just so, you can see A Study of Poco Sleeping Circles in that second photo evidencing rain as good sleeping weather.
The places people go are amazing and enviable. Safe travels travellers!

Gorgeous! Thanks JW.

neat stuff, amazing to think of early man making those cave paintings. i had no idea there is a replica cave.
Juju
@Quinerly: Holy cow!! You’re in Grifton? I did my middle school internship at the Grifton school. i know people there. I used to have my old bug fixed at David’s Automotive, back when he still fixed cars. Anyhoo, have a nice time at beach and give Poco a scratch and let me know when you’re heading back this way. If I could manage it, I’d meet you at the Ruddy Duck.

Gorgeous photos. I’m only seeing them now but worth the wait.
