Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

This blog will pay for itself.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

This really is a full service blog.

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

American History and Black History Cannot Be Separated

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

He really is that stupid.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

I was thinking earlier that music hadn’t really caught up with the Resistance.

The “inside information” about the Charlottesville rally is in the filing cabinet right next to the “secret plan” of Nixon to get the US out of Vietnam.

In case we want to get all sanctimonious about the south Dick Gregory had it straight:

For a black man, there’s no difference between the North and the South. In the South, they don’t mind how close I get, as long as I don’t get too big. In the North, they don’t mind how big I get, as long as I don’t get too close.

@Schlemazel: They had a goddam fit here after this:

Georgia apologizes for giving Ludacris $65,000, condoms and 2 bottles of his own cognac

It cost the University of Georgia $65,000, one run to the supermarket and a box of condoms to get Ludacris to perform for 15 minutes before its spring football game, according to a contract received via an Open Records request.

The school didn’t have a performer signed until just two days before the event, and the late notice gave the rapper an opportunity to get, well, whatever he could think of — including two bottles of his own label cognac (though maybe this is all standard for an artist of his standing).

He wasn’t going to put on a full-length concert, but the rapper must have thought he’d be thirsty just the same, because he requested enough liquids to hydrate the Bulldogs starting offense. A box of green tea, a gallon of cranberry juice, a gallon of orange juice, a case of coconut water, two cases of Snapple, low sodium V8 juices, two cases of Gatorade, two cases of water and 12 juice boxes were agreed to be sent to his room.

Since it’s an open thread, I must make a confession.

I spoil my dogs. A LOT. I got lobster tails for John and I for dinner last night since they were on sale. They were small so I figured two for each of us. And since the price was so good, I got two extra, one each for Lovey and Koda. They were in ecstasies. No drawn butter for them, of course, but still…that may have been an over indulgence.

Last year was a son of a bitch
    For nearly everyone we know
But I ain’t fighting with you down in a ditch
I’ll meet you up here on the road

    I know you’re tired
    And you ain’t sleeping well
    Uninspired
    And likely mad as hell
    But wherever you are
I hope the high road leads you home again
To a world you want to live in

    We’ll ride the ship down
    Dumping buckets overboard
There can’t be more of them than us
    There can’t be more

    I know you’re tired
    And you ain’t sleeping well
    Uninspired
    And likely mad as hell

So this afternoon I get to my hotel in northeast Georgia a few minutes from the center of the path of totality, camera gear in tow, all excited about the eclipse. At the front desk I overhear the owner and an employee talking — something about “they can’t take her, their schedule won’t work” and “she’ll have to go to a shelter” and “it’s a shame, she’s a good girl.”

“She” turned out to be a fairly young, spayed dachshund owned by a friend of theirs whose living arrangements suddenly changed for the worse. Five minutes and a few texts later, and little dachshund girl isn’t going to a shelter — she’s coming home with me tomorrow after the eclipse. From there she’ll go live with my brother-in-law.

So never mind the eclipse — a little dog got a new home and won’t be going to a shelter.

But last year, both the Post and Times partnered with Bannon’s Government Accountability Institute (GAI) to disseminate opposition research on Hillary Clinton published in Clinton Cash, a book by Breitbart contributor Peter Schweizer.
In April 2015, Politico reported that the “New York Times, The Washington Post and Fox News have made exclusive agreements with a conservative author for early access to his opposition research on Hillary Clinton, a move that has confounded members of the Clinton campaign and some reporters.”

Lovely people in the Trump Administration. Really top notch:

The real estate company owned by Jared Kushner, son-in-law and top adviser to President Donald Trump, has been the most aggressive in Maryland in using a controversial debt-collection tactic: getting judges to order the arrest of people who owe his company money.
Since 2013, the first full year in which the Kushner Cos. operated in Maryland, corporate entities affiliated with the firm’s 17 apartment complexes in the state have sought the civil arrest of 105 former tenants for failing to appear in court to face allegations of unpaid debt, The Baltimore Sun has found.
That’s more than any other landlord in the state over that time, an analysis of Maryland District Court data shows. Court records show that 20 former Kushner tenants have been detained.

I’m trying to imagine what the next President could possibly do to be worse than the Trumps and I’m coming up blank.

The bar is REALLY low. The “Hillary Clinton runs a child sex ring” lie they all spread makes more sense the longer you get to know the Trumps. It had to be REALLY bad to make them look good. Of course she had to be a murderer. It’s just about the only thing these people haven’t done.

I think you are both falling into the trap of thinking like a normal person who can at least see healthy thought on the distant horizon. Trump is a narcissist. Worse, he’s a stupid narcissist with no attention span. This means, contrary to what you would think, that he has the worst self-esteem possible. He requires constant ego stroking and validation. Any criticism agonizes him. He cannot deal with not being the best. The rallies are like hits for a junkie, moments when he actually feels good, because there is nothing going on except people cheering for him. When he is reminded that the rest of the country hates him, it gnaws at him, makes him so miserable that it literally keeps him up at night. This isn’t just how narcissists work. It’s completely consistent with his actions, isn’t it?

It would work in the mythological sense, but the name itself apparently means “treachery,” which would be a TERRIBLE thing to do to a sweet little Dachshund.

have sought the civil arrest of 105 former tenants for failing to appear in court to face allegations of unpaid debt, The Baltimore Sun has found.

In MA the AG has pretty much shut most collection tactics down. They wouldn’t do that for long in MA courts.

I never cease being stunned at how quickly a Wikipedia entry can be updated. In fact, usually when I see a rumour that someone famous has died, I check their Wiki page. If it doesn’t use the past tense, or give a death date, I’ll generally wait for additional confirmation. They had both Dick Gregory and Jerry Lewis updated within, literally, two or three minutes of news breaking in major media. It is impressive.

    @WaterGirl:

I don’t know. It isn’t what I do. I know we got a rash of calls from Indiana last year from people who had been taken in for unpaid debt in the course of a traffic stop. I don’t take traffic/criminal calls but I heard the general gist in the office. We don’t work in Indiana so we referred.

There was a big hoopla in Ohio over judges holding people for what we call “jail fees” but are a whole set of fines people accrue for petty crimes. The Ohio ACLU sued and sent a report to the OH Supreme Court and the SC issued a warning to local judges to stop doing it. It was great (and effective) the warning because they named the judges. They listed them by county. I cheered. Name and shame. Our local newspaper picked it up because our judge was one of the bad actors.

That’s different, though, this is debtors prison for private collections. It’s worse.

I saw Trump has gone back to referring to his former opponent as “crooked Hillary”

Now that’s Presidential, huh? Those Trumps. They’re a real class act. Smearing shit all over the US Presidency is a daily thing in TrumpWorld. I get real pleasure out of the fact that all of these people he hired will end up smeared with shit, too, just from getting too close to him. Couldn’t happen to a more deserving group.

If the President and his family really want to “bring the country together” why do they insist on calling the candidate who more Americans voted for “crooked Hillary”?

I don’t know- I’m starting to think this whole family is composed of pathological liars. What are the odds? Is it EVERY Trump or just 4 out of 6?

why do they insist on calling the candidate who more Americans voted for “crooked Hillary”?

Because in “TrumpWorld” that’s “Fake News”. You see, the only reason that “Crooked Hillary” got “more” votes is because of all the illegals voting in dumps like California.

It can’t be dumb. It was more than just Brietbart. The NYT was also more than happy to do little more than reprint press releases from Judicial Watch,in some of their columns despite the fact that Judicial Watch was founded to smear the Clintons.
