Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

“woke” is the new caravan.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

You cannot shame the shameless.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Bark louder, little dog.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

When do the post office & the dmv weigh in on the wuhan virus?

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

“Squeaker” McCarthy

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

If you are still in the GOP, you are an extremist.

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

I promised you a recipe thread and puppy picture for tonight, but I didn’t expect my one and only client today to take all day. So I must delay. Tomorrow is another day!

Ever since John posted about Rescuing Fish from a Flood, this song has been running through my head – I kept hearing “rescuing fish from a flood” to a tune that I suspected was a Squeeze song, but until I starting running through their library (not difficult, I love Squeeze) I wasn’t quite sure which one.  Now you may have my earworm:

More very jarring crossover in L&O (I just notice it more, now).
Isabel Gillies, actress who played a homicidal maniac cop killer defendant on a season 8 L&O. ended up in a regular role as Kathy, Stabler’s wife (eventually ex) on SVU, 1999-2011

I understand she arrived at the airport (in D.C.) separately before the flight to Florida, just like her separate-cars SOTU arrival. Her spox is doing a valiant job of ascribing all these things to “scheduling conflicts,” but she clearly wants to spend minimal time in the same space with him. Whatever it was she said, I’m sure she was thinking something quite different. In street Slovenian.

I had lunch yesterday with the media-connected friend I’ve known since J-school. One of my friend’s other friends is currently covering the White House for a major publication. That person says that the relationship between Trump and Melania is now so toxic that White House aides and interns have to perform elaborate “traffic management” so that the two of them don’t even meet accidentally in the halls. Good times.

Mussels can filter as much as 50 gallons of water per day. Studying what they pick up is a great way to study what’s in the water.

Did you know that Salmon bay near the railroad bridge has hugely elevated levels of all the bad stuff in coal because cola flies off trains? A few years ago Puget Soundkeeper discovered how bad it gets by putting out mussels and testing them.

Nothing whatsoever wrong with mussels, although also not a dish that entices the taste buds when it’s on the menu. Eight times out of ten they’re prepared okay but nothing to warrant ordering them.

Except for the heaping bowlsful served at a funky Japanese eatery way downtown in Manhattan, a hop and skip south of Astor Place. Galactically garlicky, spectacularly superb. Doubt the place is there any longer as that was 40 years ago.

OT, but I just saw this on Lawyers, Guns and Money:

A network of sleazy operators, sometimes working in conjunction with National Enquirer publisher David Pecker, Trump’s close friend, would pay off women to prevent their stories from seeing the light of day.

That seems to fit with the attorney who said he “facilitated” the $130,000 payment to Storny Daniels.

May I ask, as a Squeeze fan, that anyone who has enjoyed, (as I have), Singles-45 and under, their greatest hits album- please go and buy their more recent album Spot The Difference.

They got utterly boned on Singles, the record label took all the money. Cheekily, they re-recorded the entire album, years later, and released it as Spot The Difference. I think you will enjoy it.

Also, Glenn Tilbrook’s solo stuff is great. He’s a wonderful guy, from all accounts, playing tiny gigs in little joints all over the place, and staying late into the night to sing songs with his fans and admirers. I’m going to get to one of those shows, one of these days.

Dunno if this has been mentioned (no time to keep up with the jackals earlier today): Five Dollar Feminist at Wonkette – Donnie and the Playmates:

    […]

And here’s one more: One of Donald Trump’s rich buddies swooped in and paid Karen McDougal to keep quiet. Just like Stormy Daniels. Only this time it wasn’t Trump’s personal fixer Michael Cohen. It was David Pecker (LOL, no really!), the CEO of the National Enquirer’s parent company who paid McDougal $150,000 for her story. A MONTH BEFORE THE ELECTION. AND NEVER RAN IT.

Now, we thought “catch and kill” was what happens when you find your husband has been barebacking multiple porn stars in the same weekend. But no! In publishing, it’s the practice of buying the rights to a story to prevent it getting out, either to bury it, or to use the information for some other purpose.

Maxine Page, who worked at A.M.I. [National Enquirer’s parent company] on and off from 2002 to 2012, including as an executive editor at one of the company’s Web sites, said that Pecker also used the unpublished stories as “leverage” over some celebrities in order to pressure them to pose for his magazines or feed him stories. Several former employees said that these celebrities included Arnold Schwarzenegger, as reported by the Los Angeles Times, and Tiger Woods. (Schwarzenegger, through an attorney, denied this claim. Woods did not respond to requests for comment.) “Even though they’re just tabloids, just rags, it’s still a cause of concern,” Page said. “In theory, you would think that Trump has all the power in that relationship, but in fact Pecker has the power—he has the power to run these stories. He knows where the bodies are buried.”

So now some tabloid publisher has leverage over Donald Trump because he’s got the rights to publish this woman’s sad, gross story of having sad, gross sex with a sad, gross old man. Just like Christopher Steele warned us the Russians would “exploit Trump’s personal obsessions and sexual perversions in order to obtain suitable ‘kompromat.’”

    […]

Yup. There’s no need to imagine that Pecker (and the people holding the Apprentice tapes) are Donnie’s friends. Just imagine what that keeping that story out of the press is worth to Twitler, and thus to Pecker and Vlad and the rest…

It’s grifters all the way down.

    Cheers,
    Scott.

Have watched a number of shows and movies from Finland over the past few months and noticed something.

The front doors of houses open outwards. Dunno if that’s intrinsically Finnish (for whatever reason) or not, but it was a small detail which stood out and haven’t particularly observed as universal in other Nordic fare. One would initially suppose in a country with a significant snowfall season that the configuration would make it more difficult to exit when it comes time to wield the snow shovel.

‘Black Panther’ Is Marvel’s First Genuine Masterpiece

    Ryan Coogler’s highly anticipated
superhero movie is even better and richer than could have been imagined, thanks to a fantastical world that evokes real questions about history

    By K. Austin Collins
    Feb 14, 2018, 11:00am EST

    ……………………..

That’s not the sole reason Black Panther seems poised to trounce box office records this weekend, to say nothing of its other benchmarks, like exceeding
the Fandango presales of every other Marvel movie to date, or being one of Twitter’s most talked-about movies of 2017—despite not coming out until 2018. But it helps. If we’re going to have a conversation about what makes Black Panther feel so essential, we may as well start there. We can do the whole song and dance of spelling out the basic reasons for the movie’s importance: what it means for Hollywood that a project of this size, with this budget, and with a nearly all-black cast, can finally seem like a worthwhile risk for a major studio and the timely impact of a movie about a mythical African kingdom, a so-called “shithole country,” to be released at this moment in our political history. The movie is a symbolic solution to issues that, when Black Panther was just a rumor, a dream getting tossed to and fro in a Marvel Studios boardroom, we didn’t think could grow so much more dire.

    …………………….

On the other hand, it has to work as a movie, too. It has to be a banger. The clapbacks have to be good. The fights have to be great.I’m trying to imagine being Ryan Coogler, the movie’s 31-year-old superstar director, at the start of this project, tasked with a job as monumental as this, burdened by a keen sense of the inherent inability to please everyone, and still having to make the movie. The central triumph of Black Panther, though it’s merely one of many, is
that the story Coogler and his cowriter, Joe Robert Cole, have devised is even better and richer than could have been imagined—not only because it owes so much to racial questions of the kind the Marvel Universe hasn’t encountered before, but also because we’re 17 movies deep into said universe and well versed in its foibles and missed opportunities.

Black Panther is a feat in its own right. It is
very much the Black Panther tale dreamed up by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in the 1960s, a retelling of the origin story in which Wakanda becomes the sole possessor of vibranium, an indestructible alien element from a fallen meteorite, and over time becomes the most technologically advanced society in the world, in part by cutting itself off from said world, hiding under the cloak of unassuming third-world poverty.

    ……………………

It’s a complicated plot centered on the question of what Wakanda is
and—most urgently—what it means, not only to the Wakandans themselves nor even to Africans broadly, but to blacks everywhere. Imagine knowing there was a black utopia, a place at the root of all blackness, self-sufficient and untouched by slavery or colonialism. It’s a fantasy:a reversal of history. “Wakanda itself is a dream state,” says director Ava DuVernay to The New York Times, “a
place that’s been in the hearts and minds and spirits of black people
since we were brought here in chains.” The question that envelops Black Panther, in other words, is a question baked, poignantly and also fraughtly, into its script. What Wakanda—a booming black metropolis that mixes technological Afro-futurity with the spiritual and ancestral past—means to the black people within the movie is analogous to what it means to us outside of it.

Of all the stories I saw today about the kids and the schools, and “what can we do?” none dared mention this.

The NRA Foundation gave nearly $2.2 million to schools across the country in 2016. The Broward County Public School district, of which Stoneman Douglas High is a part, has at least four other schools that have received NRA donations, according to the AP.

According to records obtained by the AP, the school’s JROTC program received $10,827 in “non-cash assistance” from the NRA Foundation, the organization’s fundraising and charitable group, in 2016, when Cruz was part of the team.

They help sponsor rifle clubs and shooting competitions (in connection with JROTC), which Cruz would go to. I wonder if the “non-cash assistance” goes for equipment? coaches? judges? competition space?

Lots of places have rifle clubs. But no mention of the NRA latelly.

Can’t believe we’re this far into a Squeeze thread and nobody has mentioned my favorite Another Nail in My Heart.

I have no problem with clubs and competitions. For one thing, the weapons stay at the club. And as much as we (properly) hate on the NRA, their safety/education arm does good work.

I’ve read, (maybe in the WaPo?), that she’s been staying in hotels at least part of the time she’s in DC.

I read the same, not long ago.

The Secret Service must love this gig!

My mom’s father, brothers, grandfather and uncles were in the wholesale seafood business back to the 19th century. They bought directly off the fleet at 300am and distributed to markets and restaurants. Then vame the depression and A&P supermarkets, which skipped the middleman. Goodbye fish business.
Family legend: My grandfather, a large and strong man, supposedly grabbed a supersize lobster off the pier and took it home. over his shoulder, on the trolley.

@Mary G: that is their best song, though it troubles me that the title is “another nail IN my heart” but the lyric is “another nail FOR my heart”.

Sometimes it’s difficult being an OCD pedant.

@Immanentize: Formed in 1978 The Beat, in US The English Beat, Down Under The British Beat. Same band. For a while now, 2 bands called The Beat. Ranking Roger fronts one, Dave Wakeling the other. Think they’re amicable; one based in US, the other in UK.

Also too, let’s not forget One Step Beyond. Guess there were rights issues, the iTunes version I bought is house/techno. But acceptable.

@p.a.: I really don’t like One Step Beyond too much, I guess because it was so overplayed. Did you ever hear the instrumental, Papa’s Got a New Pigbag by Pigbag? Fabulous. I have the 45 somewhere….

The prosecutors also noted that Manafort has “questioned his ability to maintain the payments on all his mortgages” and that members of his family aren’t “willing to assume the risk” of helping him.

Slightly OT, but Belle & Sebastian are thinking of having a cruise sometime next year. 4 days leaving from Barcelona. Go to the band’s web site to let them know if you’re interested. We’re seriously considering it. We did go to London last year to see two 20th anniversary shows for Tigermilk and If You’re Feeling Sinister at the Royal Albert Hall. Daughters made it on stage the 2nd night during Boy With the Arab Strap.

    @Aleta:

Can’t wait. Saw a mention that it’s in IMAX some places. (Not here though. The 3D around here isn’t too great either.)

Like most blockbusters not Avatar or Jackass or Transformers or X-Men or a cartoon, the 3D is a post conversion. I’m sure it looks pretty good, but I saved a few bucks and saw the colors in fuller saturation.

Just saying, that is also the recipe for Danish Coffee and Norwegian coffee. Maybe Swedish coffee, who knows with those humourless baskets.

@Mike in NC: Dunno–the job was in Ludlow (more like north of Springfield). At least, it makes me feel good that the school systems here are trying to live up to the rules about accommodating students etc etc.

My kid (who grew up in a swanky Boston area suburb) had kids with 10 different mother-tongues–out of a class of 22 or 24 or something. I thought it was fantastic! The school had a big International day celebration with food–yum!, and people all had an opportunity to order a flag from their country of origin. They hung along the hallways. It was lovely.
