Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Hell hath no fury like a farmer bankrupted.

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

The lights are all blinking red.

You are either for trump or for democracy. Pick one.

Hey Washington Post, “Democracy Dies in Darkness” was supposed to be a warning, not a mission statement.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

Those who are easily outraged are easily manipulated.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

It is possible to do the right thing without the promise of a cookie.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

If ‘weird’ was the finish line, they ran through the tape and kept running.

At some point, the ability to learn is a factor of character, not IQ.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the gop

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

It’s all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

All hail the time of the bunny!

People are weird.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

The Trump Hiring Doctrine

I think I have figured out the Trump hiring procedures. They go like this:

Q: Are you qualified for this position?

A: Not in any way, shape, or form, but I did stay in a Trump hotel.

Q: Do you have a large social media presence and an easily discoverable history of past racially and otherwise bigoted statements?

A: Of course.

Q: Do you read Gateway Pundit?

A: I’m a valued commenter.

Q: State the first commandment.

A: Trump is thy God; thou shalt not have strange gods before the Donald.

EXCELLENT! You’re hired.

In other news:

A political appointee at the Department of Health and Human Services shared an image in 2017 that said “our forefathers would have hung” Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton for treason, a CNN KFile review has found.

Ximena Barreto is a far-right political pundit who in December 2017 joined the Trump administration as deputy director of communications at the department.

Barreto was placed on leave by the department on Monday after the liberal watchdog Media Matters reported that Barreto called Islam “a cult” and pushed the false Pizzagate conspiracy theory, which alleged that Clinton was part of a child-sex ring based in part at a Washington, DC, pizza restaurant.

A subsequent KFile review of her Twitter account “RepublicanChick” found that Barreto also repeatedly used the hashtag #BanIslam and twice shared conspiracy theories about the death of Democratic National Committee staffer Seth Rich.

Barreto also shared a conspiracy theory that French President Emmanuel Macron was controlled by the Rothschild family and that Clinton and Obama were controlled by investor and Democratic mega-donor George Soros. Both the Rothschilds and Soros are frequent targets of anti-Semitic conspiracy theories.

Our government is now just jampacked with every bottom feeder the internet can burp up. When Democrats get back in charge the denazification is going to take up the entire first term.

    Especially since we’re sure to get distracted by the deneoliberalification.

    This is good news:

    Dunford: only aware of Syrian air defenses. No Russian air defenses.

    — Michael Weiss (@michaeldweiss) April 14, 2018

    Also, from what Gen Dunford stated at the press briefing, this was a very limited set. So I think we’ll find that the reports of striking Hezbullah sites are erroneous. Pretty much this was a very minimalist targeting set. If what Gen Dunford has indicated is correct, then Bolton lost on this. Bigly!

    I went my first Ds meeting, held in the local old school New England church. The venue had to be shifted from the fire and police station at the last minute because they got a lot more people than they were expecting. We have 8 candidates running for an open state legislature seat, 4 men and 4 women, one woman was a Latina, one of the candidates is a college student. They were thoughtful and were collecting signatures to get on the ballot. I was pretty impressed. Almost forgot about the Tangerine Tragedy in the WH.

    Here’s Trumpov’s hiring philosophy:

    1) Will you be loyal to me no matter what?
    2) Are you against the mission of the agency I’m about to nominate you to and/or do you pledge to do the opposite of whatever Obama did/would do?
    3) Do you promise to work tirelessly to promote the interests of big business/billionaires, with the occasional nod to the religious right if necessary?

    You can only protect one goalie in expansion and it was a no-brainer for the Pens to expose Fleury, who is ten years older than Matt Murray and has a hefty contract. Remember, Murray was the playoffs starter for the Pens last two Cups and Fleury had a GAA over 3 last season.

    Slightly OT, but remember one of the juicier tibits in the Steele dossier that Trump’s consigliere Michael Cohen had snuck over to Prague in 2016 for a meeting with Russian operatives to discuss their “contributions” to the upcoming election? And remember how Cohen brushed this off, claiming, sure, he had been in Italy or something, but his passport showed no travel to the Czech Republic so all y’all can STFU? And remember how we were all “that’s a ridiculous excuse, because once you’re in the EU, your passport wouldn’t show if you travelled from, say Italy to the CR”

    Well, guess where Mueller caught Michael Cohen traveling in 2016?

    1) It’s not beyond possibility that Trump/Putin are play-acting a little “See, we’re not pals” to take in the gullible, and that Russia won’t do anything but mutter a little in response

    2) Trump probably thinks he Won the Evening by knocking the Cohen stuff off the air (bombs having acted as shiny object for the cable news networks), but my confident prediction is that the Cohen/Prague revelation will have a considerably longer shelf-life

    Some details of Trump Tower fire from residents. In addition to the building not having a sprinkler system, yesterday there were:
    * no orders to evacuate
    * no working phones
    * no working elevators
    * no fire alarms
    * no one answering at the front desk

    @Wapiti: the guy that was injured has died. The only resident that was alerted was texted by Michael Cohen to get out.

    @Matt McIrvin:

    The first thing they do if they get a super majority (please, please) is to put in nationwide vote by mail. I think we can get rid of the outdated poll stations. It also makes the ballot equally accesible to everyone and nobody is going to be surpressing votes by stupid gimmicks by southern old gentlemans. Then start protecting the vote.

    THEN we can start cleaning shit up.

    @cain: We’ll have to be on their collective asses to actually do any of these things. Or maybe the new crop of candidates coming in are better. The youngs are really inspiring, I’ve got to say. Not a lead-addled brain among them.

    @Matt McIrvin:
    Dead thread, and I don’t want to be overconfident or anything but it’s virtually a lock barring election shenanigans/Wag The Dog scenarios. We have historical trends at our backs. The president’s party nearly always gets clobbered in mid-terms elections. If this doesn’t happen, then the GOP should be declared illegimate and booted from office. They can leave voluntarily or can be carried out. The choice is ultimately theirs.

    @sukabi:

    Trump also called the victim a “crazy Jew,” which is getting absolutely no attention in the press.

    Even today the MSM parses the fuck out of every sentence Hillary Clinton utters but Trump can say literally anything because his constant lies have somehow inoculated him against any repercussions for his verbal misdeeds.

    I want Trump gone yesterday, but if he’s going to stick around could he please start imprisoning journalists? God knows we’ll get there eventually, and I could use a little pick-me-up right about now.

    April is the cruelest month:(

    @bmoak: The Panthers totally fucked themselves over. Not only did they give up Smith and Marchessault, they fired the head coach in a humiliating way earlier in the season. Gallant was a damn good coach and taking an expansion team to the playoffs proves it. Don’t get me started on how I feel about the Panthers management. Viola, owner of the Panthers, was asked to be Secretary of the Army in the Trump administration. He eventually declined because he couldn’t divest his holdings or something. There was a background rumor that Gallant didn’t subscribe to Viola’s political views and that was one of the background reasons for his firing.
