I just finished standardizing a bunch of application settings, which is about as exciting as it sounds. Then I went to get more coffee. This young man was in the kitchen, doing his best impression of Friday-afternoon-me.

And now… it’s…. 5pm! Who has weekend plans? I will be doing the usual: seeing some friends, yes, but mostly reading, writing, playing video games, and watching cartoons. Open thread!

I have mixed feelings about asking this, since this situation is kind of weaning me off Facebook, and that could be good. BUT:

My timeline feed is at most 2-3 items and then “more stories” which never loads. My “notifications” are for group activity, and very little about what actual humans are doing.

I am not seeing my human friends in my feed. I did not ask Fuckbook to set up my viewing experience like this.

Some articles have suggested clearing out my whole history and cookies, but that would be a pain, cuz I don’t remember my logins for my LA Times and WaPost subs.

Has Facebook been screwing around with your timeline and loading time? What to do??

Chortling over this article in the San Diego Union Tribune about how Republicans put up a candidate to be a backstop for Duncan Hunter, but papa Hunter pitched a hissy fit and demanded no one give the other guy money, allowing Ammar Campa-Najjar to get into the general election.

This is a potential bonus district for the Democrats. Of the California Republican districts the Democratic Party initially believed it needed to win in order to gain the majority in the House of Representatives, the 50th wasn’t one of them.

“I would think the (Democratic National Committee) is licking its chops,” said Republican John Dadian, a consultant long involved in East County politics.

“…I won’t go as far as saying (Hunter) can’t win,” he added. “But clearly one of the strongest Republican districts in the nation could could go Democratic.”

I am tired and plan to do as little as possible this weekend. Work has been hard and then an adventure. The University has spent years planning a new all info integrated computer system with the pieces of it that imapact financial aid the most rolling out this fall term. Because our world revolves around academic years, there was no possible way to avoid starting up most of it between the end of summer and the beginning of fall which is hugely busy. Naturally there have been new problems that testing didn’t find. Volume is already huge. We had a way overdue nice renovation over summer and just moved back into our own offices last week. The new student contact website rolled out last December worked so well students were sending emails to us all times of day or night then again when answers weren’t instant so we were behind there. The first day of class, some large water pipe broke in the night and the whole main administration building 5 departments, arrived to inches of water flowing out of the 2nd floor down the main staircase. They had to shut down the electricity. Then we waited in the dark for power to be restored…and waited. The end of the day 4 departments had to rig help desks in a nearby library with an insufficient # of laptops. The next day we reported early and we were reassigned to other areas of campus. The front desk help stayed at the first library, the rest of my department were sent to another library where we commandeered most of the rooms students reserve for study groups. It took all day of doing nothing while we waited for our desktop computers to be brought and connections set up. It is reported the original building smells awful and maintanence wouldn’t authorize access to get our goods till all kinds of tests were run, unexplained why. So 2 days nothing useful done about correcting some major problems discovered in the new system just before the flood. Today we could mostly work. Working printers still aren’t set up right and we don’t have but 1 key for all the offices so we have to take turns staying in our borrowed offices because we have lots of confidential stuff we can’t have random students seeing. There are about 150 random students studying right outside our new doors. Hope they don’t realize who we are and try and ask questions directly because we are so far behind its not funny. Also we made the local news with video of the flood I hear. Also haven’t heard what cause was. I am really seriously goofing off this weekend.

And now… it’s…. 5pm! Who has weekend plans?

Headed down to our house at Sunset Beach, NC early tomorrow morning – will be there through Labor Day weekend. I have a new SUP (Stand-Up Paddleboard) – essentially an over-sized surfboard you ride standing up and use a paddle to propel instead of swim-fashion with your arms like a regular surfboard. I plan to learn to ride it in the ocean surf on smaller-wave days, but trying to learn to stand up (and stay standing) on it in the ocean is like trying to ride a waterbed in the back of a moving pickup truck on a rutted dirt road…so I will spend some learning time on the relative flatwater of the Inland Waterway. Other than that, plenty of playing my guitar. Be by myself the first few days, but have a house-full of guests coming for Labor Day weekend itself. There will be a huge cooler full of various kinds of beer at the house (mostly good New Belgium varieties, no donkey-piss Budweiser).

A few random thoughts about John Lennon

Tenth time was not the charm for Mark David Chapman, John Lennon‘s killer who applied for parole yet again and was denied parole yet again this week. He will remain in prison for at least two more years.

According to the Associated Press, New York’s parole board determined that releasing Chapman, who shot and killed the Beatles member outside Lennon’s New York apartment on Dec. 8, 1980, “would be incompatible with the welfare and safety of society and would so deprecate the serious nature of the crime as to undermine respect for the law.”

I think that John was my favorite Beatle. I liked his quick wit. I think that Paul was slightly more talented musically, but hell, this was still like Mozart and Beethoven being in a band together.

A while back, I was watching a video of John and the boys performing “Dig A Pony” when it hit me again that John was dead, that he had been cruelly murdered by a piece of shit nobody.

Some years ago, I remember seeing the cover of People magazine. It featured a slew of stories about John’s killer, his life, his girlfriend. The coverage seemed obscene. I never bought a copy of People again.

I read the news today, oh boy…

They deal with the chair because the companies will give them an 80% discount. The ramps are local so no way to force large discounts to the insurer so they won’t cover it. The reason it costs $15 for atylanol in the hospital is so they can tell the insurance company “For you, just $2!” They they pay a buck & leave you with a buck to pay. Most of the $2 goes to covering the added cost of dealing with the bastards. And woe betide the poor sap without insurance, he is getting socked $15 simply to prove to the insurance company they really are getting a $13 discount

It is odd, I never felt like either was half as good alone as the two were together. Each had talent but together they fed off and supported each other that made magic.

In the 60’s when the Beatles were really hot Mad magazine did a piece on “Where Are They Now?” for them in the future. They predicted Paul would die in NYC (torn to shreds by crazed fans). I always found that to be sort of spooky because none of them stayed in the US.

While there I will ponder the fact that I have never seen a Special Air Quality Statement on my local Weather Network page. We’re 2500 miles from the 560(!) fires burning in British Columbia…

    Issued at 15:58 Friday 24 August 2018
A plume of smoke from fires in Western Canada is moving at high altitude across the Maritimes, causing hazy skies and a reddish sun. This smoke is not expected to reach the surface or affect air quality in our region. The smoke plume will move slowly off to the east tonight.

Weekend plans? It’s my BD weekend (60-something) which is a much bigger deal to my darling 3 year-old granddaughter than to me, so her grandmother (my best friend and wife of 40+ years) and I will be spending a lot of Saturday and Sunday hanging out and “celebrating” and having a grand time. Grandkids are the best thing on earth, which I was unaware of till about 3-1/2 years ago, but it’s true. Tonight my sweet wife and I are attending a concert at the best underground music venue in town (the Lunchbox, in Phoenix) in which a young friend — who performs dark, experimental electronic stuff — will be the opening act (along with some other local avant garde acts) for the touring headliner from Brooklyn, NY (Ariadne, a modern “sacred music” duo). Be out well past midnight, it’s my wife’s turn to be the DD, so I’ll be partaking of certain, umm, “party favors” as they say. All in all, gonna be a fantastic weekend!

Of course, either intentionally or randomly, who knows, the fair organizers had placed the Johnson County Democrats booth directly across from the republican booth.

People took pictures and then posted them on social media.”

After all the media attention (Kansas City Star and a Kansas City metro television station) the fair authorities kicked both the republican and Democratic Party booths out of the fair this evening.

You’ve just got to love mall town Missouri…

“Well, here’s another nice mess you’ve gotten us into.”

They both gave contradictory interviews over the years confounding the issue. I think that some of John’s interviews belittling his own work are more unfair than analytical. Ultimately some of this is of more interest to musicologists than to fans. The recent analysis which “proved” who wrote what with respect to “A Day in the Life,” struck me as love me do about nothing. And in the end, it was what happened when the four lads came together and played that matters.

Weekend. Drown in paperwork. Footy, particularly the Chel$ea rout on Sunday (sigh). That cat is gorgeous.

@schrodingers_cat: You’ve not been to Nova Scotia? The first race riots in North America happened here in 1784 and still echo down the years.

    Samwise! Kitty-boo!

I am up at oh-dark-Husky tomorrow morning to take a road trip to Wyoming. Dropping off two horses for the University of Wyoming equestrian team, and picking up another one to bring back to Colorado. Yee-haw!
