Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it is not glory.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

He wakes up lying, and he lies all day.

They spent the last eight months firing professionals and replacing them with ideologues.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

I am pretty sure these ‘journalists’ were not always such a bootlicking sycophants.

Not all heroes wear capes.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Mediocre white men think RFK Jr’s pathetic midlife crisis is inspirational. The bar is set so low for them, it’s subterranean.

Weird. Rome has an American Pope and America has a Russian President.

Radicalized white males who support Trump are pitching a tent in the abyss.

We will not go quietly into the night; we will not vanish without a fight.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

“Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on.”

“Just close your eyes and kiss the girl and go where the tilt-a-whirl takes you.” ~OzarkHillbilly

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

Trump should be leading, not lying.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

Democracy is not a spectator sport.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

Good Morning All,

On The Road and In Your Backyard is a weekday feature spotlighting reader submissions. From the exotic to the familiar, please share your part of the world, whether you’re traveling or just in your locality. Share some photos and a narrative, let us see through your pictures and words. We’re so lucky each and every day to see and appreciate the world around us!

Submissions from commenters are welcome at tools.balloon-juice.com

Have a wonderful day and weekend! Since today is Friday, guess what? It’s otmar! Wahoo!

It’s also new iPhone day, after 3 years I get a new one; I just wish my mom was still alive so we could enjoy the day together as we’ve been buying new iPhones in sync since the 3gs (I had the original, but she waited a bit). But she wouldn’t have missed the new pricing, let me tell you! (I’m glad I’m OK with a new one every three years because I can start saving now)

—

I have a few more days of old content lined up and some new content – yay – but we need lots of new submissions for soon and for “rainy days” – get cracking!

Note – I’ve gotten a few submissions, so unless I’ve emailed you or you encountered an error, your contribution should show up soon. We’re hoping to improve things, so do give feedback – thank you so much!

Troubleshooting  We have an improved setup and plans for further development. I hope the new setup works as well for you as it has in testing, but should you have issues, please email [email protected] This new submission tool is one of many more we’ve got planned, and your feedback helps us craft them to your needs.

Today, pictures from valued commenter otmar.

September 14/15 I spent two days with most of my colleagues on a company outing. I don’t know the laws behind this, but as far as I know all companies in Austria have the option to spend tax-free money on two days of team-building and incentives for all employees each year. My employer is rather generous in this respect and thus we gather the folks from our two disjoint offices and bring them all together for fun, food and drinks. Yes, it costs money but it really helps with the cohesion and motivation.

This year we met at the Attersee, which is in Austria’s Lake district, a bit east of Salzburg.

Seewalchen am Attersee

This is close to sundown, taken from the north end of the lake where it flows out into the Ager. The building on the peninsular is Schloss Kammer

Wayregg

The next day we went hiking: we started at Wayregg (we moved from the west shore to the east shore of the lake), walking up the first hills of the alps. To the north we can see the lowlands of the “Alpenvorland” and to the south you can see the high peaks of the alps.

In this picture we’re still quite close to the starting point and thus you have a good view of this typical Austrian rural village.

Nussdorf

After the afternoon activities I strolled down to the lake. During the summer, the lakeside is full of tourists, but in the middle of September all is quiet, especially as it had been raining all day.

We were lucky with the weather: the clouds were gone and the rain from yesterday left us with clear air and a fresh feeling.

This is once again a look towards the Attersee.

No, this is not a common sight. Apparently, there was a wedding in Wayregg and this looked like they dressed up in traditional clothes and arrange for an ancient form of transportation.

Thank you so much otmar, do send us more when you can.

Travel safely everybody, and do share some stories in the comments, even if you’re joining the conversation late. Many folks confide that they go back and read old threads, one reason these are available on the Quick Links menu.

One again, to submit pictures: Use the Form or Send an Email

In that fourth picture, I half-expect to see Julie Andrews popping up to sing about the hills being alive. Und die Pferde sehen cool aus.

I’m glad you like the pictures.

Somehow the first picture I uploaded is now the third which kind of messes up the narrative.

Our little cottage here on Nantucket has a ceiling fan remote control in every room, yet there are no ceiling fans installed anywhere. Tis a mystery.

    Otmar,

Wonderful photos, you had a great terrain to work with and did a great job with it.

Now I really want to do a driving and hiking tour of your home territory, so beautiful!

    Thanks!!
