After 9.2 inches of rain in 12 days, we are having absolutely glorious weather in SoCal. Clear blue skies, temps in the 70’s, and only very gentle breezes. It’s days like yesterday and today that draws tourists here in the winter.

It’s still raining in southwest Ohio, it doesn’t turn to snow until much later tonight. After that, who knows. The predictions are varying.
I’m looking forward to Monday. Temps will be their coldest yet, in the teens, but the sun will be out! It’s been almost non-stop cloudy and overcast since before Christmas. The gloom is getting to me.

I’ll take any surplus snow here in NW Montana. There are big bare spots under the trees, it hasn’t dropped below 0º yet and only 2 mornings of single digits. What global warming?

We got some snow in Chicago today, maybe six inches, but it was a source of great excitement for Bernadette. This is only her second winter, her first as a full-grown dog, and she loves it. She’s half Bernese and built for winter, with thick furry legs and giant paws. (You can see her in the middle of March on the calendar.) We headed out mid-morning for our favorite dog-friendly neighborhood cafe, in part because the route takes her over one of her most familiar comfort areas and she’s still a touch unsure with snow where she’s supposed to poop. We had an excited frolic and also accomplished our objective. When we got to the brunch spot a musician was singing blues. I wasn’t paying much attention until I heard him singing about how his dog disappeared leaving nothing behind but a patch of yellow snow. It was no doubt a sad song but something about suddenly hearing that made me burst out laughing. It was a fun morning and the rest of the day has been a relaxed one of catching up on laundry, etc. Life is good.

Just rain here, an inch or more, the little ephemeral creek by the house is all waterfalls now, and a big pool where the 3 12 inch culverts go under the driveway, and are somewhat clogged by leaves and sticks. No damage here, hard to tell if other watersheds that may get more rain will have flooding issues.
And the USGS guys in charge of flooding prediction and gauge monitoring on streams and rivers are no longer on duty for this large rain event. Imagine that!!!

I went downtown for the Women’s March in DC, and it was quite cold, but there was still a large crowd. For some reason local news was saying 10,000 were expected, and there were at least four or five times that. My friends and I marched but didn’t stay for the rally and speeches afterward, because she had to drive home before the weather turned bad.
Signs were great; I’ll send some photos to On The Road, including ones with the very popular backdrop of the Trump International Hive of Scum and Villainy. Far fewer sustained chants than most marches, probably because there were fewer organized groups to keep them going, but there was one memorable one:
All for one and one for all
End this shutdown, stop this wall!

52 overcast and a couple showers in Seattle. Snowdrops are blooming, so is fragrant Sarcoccoca. Lots of buds are swelling on almost every shrub and tree. Its been so mild on the west coast while the middle if the country has looked frigid for weeks. El Nino and climate change…..
I grew up 35 mikes south if Cleveland. We kept a yardstick by the front door to measure the snow. I don’t miss it. We can drive 40 miles to the Cascades to experience many feet of snow from December until all but the icefields and glaciers melt in July.

Just got in from an epic grocery shopping expedition. I was expecting more snow here in NoVA this afternoon and tonight, thanks to the weather-porn ghouls, but when I got up this morning and did my geezer-mandated weather research I saw that it was just going to be cold rain and colder temps. “But don’t go out tomorrow—ice!” Yeah, right, weather ghouls.
So I was able to reshuffle my schedule, get some things done at home and avoid racing out to face angry mobs stocking up on bread and toilet paper. The store was actually a little slow for a late Saturday afternoon. Now the housecat and I are well provisioned for the next week. Even splurged on the way home and got some ribs and brisket from my local barbecue place. Just had one rib and a little brisket with some potato salad. The housecat likes a few little pieces of non-spicy rib meat.
No big plans for the evening. I half-dread looking to see what Trump said in his announcement, and yet I cannot turn away. I hope the Democrats stand firm and don’t let themselves get played. Maybe some reassuring Vera—stern and unswerving in the pursuit of justice—will be on PBS tonight.

@Mary G: I agree, but at least they know how to word a real apology, not “I apologize if anyone was offended.” Of course, if they want it to be a real apology, in addition to having the right words, it would have to come from those young men and their chaperones.

@Aleta: Are you certain of that? I would swear there was a tweet in a BJ thread today that showed her whole statement where she held a ton of people responsible, but thought all the blame should not be on the kids themselves.

So far, just rain here in Southwestern PA. Supposed to turn to snow very late tonight. Originally, they were calling for 4-8 inches here thirty miles northwest of Pittsburgh, but I’m going to guess the local news will have that ratcheted down to 2-4 once the local news comes on shortly. Was supposed to be a few inches this afternoon then turn to rain and ice and then more snow. Got nothing this afternoon and it started raining about an hour ago. Glad I ran out early anyway. Pork loin roast with potatoes, carrots, onions, rosemary and marjoram is in the oven. Green beans we froze from our garden are ready to be sautéed. Got a good, inexpensive Chardonnay on sale. We’re hunkered down.
Cleo and I have really been bonding. She likes to boop noses with me and we have these fake wrestling matches where she attacks my firearm, fake biting and scratching, while I scritch her little belly. She’s adorable.

The Windy site says that we’ll get 2″ of snow an hour at the peak tonight. I love when it rains from the sky.

Havn’t had winter here so far, this year. 20cm of snow on the ground, arriving starting in December, ( not October), 3mm at a time, ice rain, flurries. -1 at night, +8 during the day.

@Baud: I used to try to ponder a solution to that question– since, you know, as a nobody on the internet, people are looking to me– and the problem was that all the diverse states I could think of to start things out also came with much more expensive media markets, making money too important, too early. Now that California has moved up to March, that argument has become less persuasive.
We should make a rule that the other discussion must always be moved to the third or fourth thread from the top.

@Baud: Yeah, I know what you mean about that. It’s not like you can change the pitch of your voice or anything, but you can learn to speak more forcefully and have more presence when you speak.
Not related at all to KG, but I never trust anyone who can smile, for instance, while they are talking about something awful. That’s one of the things I like about Beto — he always seems to be emotionally connected to what he is saying. If he’s talking about what’s happening on the border, he looks distraught.
When he’s relaxing after a debate, he’s clearly having fun. He seems to have that “ability to be in the moment” trait that Barack Obama has. I just hope as many of Barack Obama’s other traits that I think he has, and hope he has.
edit: Even at 17 when my summer job was the playground supervisor at a park, the kids wouldn’t have listened to me for even a second if I sounded as meek as KG did on Colbert.

@??? Goku (aka Amerikan Baka) ??: no offense, honey. I’m on the smarty pants phone here mostly. Only the box for the pie filter at the bottom and the link button doesn’t seem to work half the time. Something changed with the site and/or when I went from the Microsoft Windows phone to the Samsung. I mostly have to copy and paste a link, so have gotten in that habit. Probably me.. Something that I’m not getting on the Samsung. Thanks.

@Mnemosyne: I read somewhere else on Twitter, so huge grain of salt, but the person, who claimed to have been there, said that the kids started harassing some African-Americans, and the Native Americans moved in between as protection. Now all kinds of righties on Twitter are claiming that it’s all the Natives’ fault for getting in the punks’ grill. As if.

Can confirm snow on the ground here in Chicago – couple inches by me. Saw a semi truck heading up a side street earlier on my way home from the library masterfully getting around a traffic calming circle.

@Steeplejack: I probably haven’t taken the time to figure out the phone and the correct way to link. If something doesn’t interest me, I avoid it… And tech doesn’t interest me. I certainly can piss people off but try not to do so here, even though I have when someone gets under my skin. I like to look at it like we are all on the same side. I just find certain regular commenters that others seem to adore quite tedious, though. I try to read and understand before I comment. Went years and years here and only scanned the comments for interesting links. Didn’t keep up with everyone’s drama and personal stuff. It was only when I saw a link to some local musicians that I know very well posted by Ozark 3 plus years ago that I tried to track him down because I figured we knew each other in real life or at a minimum paths had crossed. I was so out of the loop that I would return to that music thread looking to connect with him to see if he was who I thought he might be. Just haven’t been one to comment on any blog…until recently. Plus, eats up a lot of time.

@WaterGirl: Still, it’s ironic (irresponsible) for me to be railing about mobs but at the same time to criticize and pass on part of her statement w/o checking for the whole one. High emotions and fast assumptions, putting out wrong info — not good. It reminds me of the warning after Trump was elected: to stay aware of how I might be changing, of what’s become acceptable that I used to think I wouldn’t do. Small scale, but I honestly do see differences in my reactions that I don’t believe in, like feeling there is less time to comprehend before making judgements. It’s like anxiety reactions, feeling in a state of emergency. I understand why it’s happening, but I gotta be aware.

The wind was blowing so hard that stuff was flying out of the grocery bags on the way to the car, and bending down to pick them up while standing on a sheet of ice and holding on to your cart so it would not blow away in the wind was not ideal. Yes, you’ve been doing better. But when you (you = anyone, not just you personally) feel that you have to preface a comment or question with a qualifier like “Don’t take this the wrong way” or “I don’t mean to sound [a way that I’m just about to sound]” it’s a warning sign to stop and think.
You have been reading the blog long enough to have seen other (long) naked links from Quinerly. What you seem to have missed is that quite often they’re paired with something like: “Sorry for the naked link, but I’m commenting on the smarty phone.” An indication that, yeah, she does know that there is a fancy link-mo-tron gizmo but isn’t able or willing to use it at the moment.

What struck me is that other than the DACA bullshit it seems to include things that Democrats probably have offered as “border security related” things that could be a compromise and treated them as concessions. Whether that was intentionally insulting or just a result of VP Dense and Jared not really paying attention when talking to Democrats is anyone’s guess.

@Mary G: I thought our 3 local news channels (5, 9 and 12) covered it in a straightforward manner with no “both sides” BS. Channel 5 (NBC affiliate) did blur the faces of the Nazis on the video. Channels 9 & 12 (Sinclair) did not. The Cincinnati Enquirer has been a disgrace for decades.
ETA I saw new twist on Raw Story. Evidently the Nazis had been harassing a group of African Americans (shock) and the Indigenous marchers intervened, so the Nazis started harassing them.
