Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

Roe isn’t about choice, it’s about freedom.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

Not all heroes wear capes.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

If you are still in the GOP, you are an extremist.

“But what about the lurkers?”

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

Nothing worth doing is easy.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

This post is in: 2020 Elections, C.R.E.A.M., I Can No Longer Rationally Discuss The Sanders Campaign, Open Threads, Riveted By The Sociological Significance Of It All

Morning Joe put together a montage highlighting the similarity between comments Trump and Bernie Sanders have made about releasing their tax returns ?? pic.twitter.com/p6Tij7BJlu

— Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) April 4, 2019

Enough with the excuses, @helaineolen says. It’s time for Bernie Sanders to release his tax returns. https://t.co/QNoVkex3ja

— Washington Post Opinions (@PostOpinions) April 4, 2019

Bernie Sanders said nearly 40 days ago he would realize his taxes “soon.” Asked by @tedbarrettcnn for an update today, Sanders was evasive and his aides stepped in front of him and tried to prevent Sanders from being questioned further https://t.co/Dp6gy5r1RK

— Manu Raju (@mkraju) April 5, 2019

.
TA-DAAAH!

.@BernieSanders sets a date for releasing his tax returns: "April 15 is coming. That will be the 10th year, and we will make them all public." https://t.co/mqz90MVg9p

— Hanna Trudo (@HCTrudo) April 5, 2019

Tenth year of what?...

And why April 15th?…

Bernie Sanders to appear in Fox News town hall meeting https://t.co/wl16BIBgsL

— Zeke Miller (@ZekeJMiller) April 3, 2019

Swear to Murphy, Sanders believes he can peel off enough Repubs who find Trump distasteful to monkeywrench his way into the Democratic nomination. A Dem we can *work* with! One who *appreciates* the hard-working white salt of the earth!

And given this degraded timeline, bastid could be correct!

You'll note how much more comfortable he'll be in a studio teaming with MAGA than one full of black people

Curious to see if he'll call out fox news' undeniably bigoted broadcasts or stand up for black/brown lives, repro rights rtc https://t.co/P4wolonbge

— T. Fisher King (@T_FisherKing) April 4, 2019

It's also completely in character for him. This is the same guy who gave a speech in 2015 at Jerry Falwell's Liberty University* w/ mandatory attendance by students, who went on Lou Dobbs' show to bash immigrants, and who supported an amendment favoring the Minutemen vigilantes.

    @Mary G:
And I don’t know why any one would expect any different from him. He’s an old entitled ass who has had how many jobs outside of political office? His policy record and congressional voting record is pretty shitty for someone who claims to be about as left as is possible. I’ll give him credit though, he’s smarter than Trump. Talk about your minimal advantage however, I mean I consider Trump to be about as smart as a rotting turnip.

This is why he voted for Dump’s racist wall ( senate vote #26 [link])

This is why he infamously said gays and women should shut up lest they offend bigoted whites

“what concerns me is that you have many white working class people who are voting against their own best interest. These are guys getting hung up on gay marriage issues, they`re getting hang up on abortion issues and it is time we started focusing on the economic issues that bring us together” (link)

This is why he said black voters in southern primary states “distort reality” and their votes should be suppressed by moving them to the back of the bus campaign calendar (link)

This is why he’s an apologist for racist whites, stating “I think you know there are a lot of white folks out there who are not necessarily racist who felt uncomfortable for the first time in their lives about whether or not they wanted to vote for an African-American [Stacey Abrams and Andrew Gillum].” (link)

It’s always been about his fetishizing of racist whites.

Sanders’ continued popularity is evidence that profound stupidity and ignorance are not limited to the Right. They are American* problems and there is no plausible cure.

*But not limited to the US. Brexit and the increasing number of countries willingly embracing extreme right-wing authoritarianism are evidence that the problem is widespread.

@TriassicSands: This is true. I had a run-in on Facebook this evening with some ninny who told me the reason Hillary lost was because she called BERNIE’s supporters deplorable, that she said she didn’t want or need the votes of millennials living in their mom’s basement. This after she told me that I had a poor memory of the campaign if I was trying to blame Hillary’s loss on voter suppression and the EC.

I read it, then read it again and wondered what planet has she been living on?

Hillary said half of TRUMP’S supporters were deplorable. I’m pretty sure she fantasized the rest of what she said.

Oh swell! The security company for our cabin just called us, at 1am to tell us that the alarm had gone off there. Since we put it on the market the security alarm has been tripped several times by idiot realtors, but I don’t think anyone is showing the cabin at 1am.

In other news, I’m a great aunt! My niece who lives in Italy had her baby boy on Thursday morning at 2am. They named him Lorenzo.

Re: Bernie on Trevor Noah last night. Bernie did OK but the one failing I see in his plan is his plan is to keep the entire population engaged and demanding the change Bernie wants. The problem with that is that isn’t the America we live in. People vote (well some of us at least) and then mostly we want politicians to sort it out while we go on with our lives. No one is going to be at the barricades 24/7 for any president.

Bernie has nice pipe dreams, but they aren’t close to being something that would ever happen.

But it’s become clear that releasing tax returns is a giant political liability, courting white midwesterner critical to winning the Presidency, and calling the biggest socialist in the room a concervative carries some serious cognitive dissonance.

With all due respect to the BernieBros in attendance. My litmus test isn’t ‘the most liberal’ person who is running. My litmus test is who can get the most done. Imho Bernie isn’t that guy. Nothing in his career has indicated he is a ringleader. Sure, he lights a fire under your asses, but he doesn’t do anything with his fellow Senators and Congress Critters. Well, at least he hasn’t up until this point. So before you castigate all of us, pull your heads & egos out of your asses. It isn’t personal. It isn’t about Bernie. It’s about all of us. So peace be with you and go fuck off.

@kindness: My litmus test is who would make the best president. This comes down to looking at their gut political instincts, plus their abilities to think about executing their goals, and critically evaluate facts. Sanders I don’t like for #1, but that’s a matter of personal preference; it’s the latter two that concern me the most about him. See the infamous NYDN interview for #2, or as noted in this thread that he thinks continued political pressure is a thing the left can mount in America. It would be nice if it were so, of course, but…

I predict that Bernie Sanders won’t perform particularly well with the fabled white working class this time around, even the Democrats. And his fanatics–who for some reason think they are rough-hewn men of action instead of squishy, pissy intellectuals with cosplay fantasies–will go absolutely riproaring apeshit about who ruined their messiah’s anointment. And I will laugh and laugh and laugh and laugh.
