Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

“In the future, this lab will be a museum. do not touch it.”

This really is a full service blog.

Come on, man.

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

The unpunished coup was a training exercise.

Every reporter and pundit should have to declare if they ever vacationed with a billionaire.

Let there be snark.

So many bastards, so little time.

No one could have predicted…

Disagreements are healthy; personal attacks are not.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

Relentless negativity is not a sign that you are more realistic.

I have other things to bitch about but those will have to wait.

If you cannot answer whether trump lost the 2020 election, you are unfit for office.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

When they say they are pro-life, they do not mean yours.

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

The line between political reporting and fan fiction continues to blur.

My FIL is doing well and is well into recovery. So fingers are still crossed because the river is not yet forded, but the most dangerous stuff appears to be behind us. Thanks to all for well wishes, etc., you’re a great bunch of jackals, and I’m proud to be one of you.

Have a wonderful day, and enjoy the pictures!

Today, pictures from valued commenter JoeyJoeJoe.

I took a trip to Gatlinburg and the Smokies from April 6-10, 2019.

Smoke’s coming down from the top of the mountain.

When the smoke and mist disappears, the view is much better.

Clingman’s Dome

There’s a ramp up to Clingman’s Dome. On a clear day, you can see seven states from the top if you move in a circle.

Thank you so much JoeyJoeJoe, do send us more when you can.

Travel safely everybody, and do share some stories in the comments, even if you’re joining the conversation late. Many folks confide that they go back and read old threads, one reason these are available on the Quick Links menu.

Good news about the father in law. Let’s keep the good news going.

Very nice scenery there, although I don’t think that is really smoke we are seeing in the pictures.

Photos 3, 4, and 5 will not load for me. I cannot view the images; I am told they have errors. If I try to reload the image on this page, the frame disappears. I have been having this problem for some weeks now. It is frustrating.

Wonderful stuff, and one of the few Simpson’s references I would get.

Glad there is good news Alain. Positive vibe emissions will be ongoing…

@Amir Khalid: I’m not sure what to say. The pictures are there and work for everyone. It sounds like something wrong with he CDN. Do you use a VPN? Try without it and see if hst makes a difference.

The smokey’s are only three to four hours north of me, but I’ve never been. The pictures are beautiful and I should make an effort to visit.

What are the 7 states you can see from Clingman’s Dome? Definitely Tennessee and North Carolina. Probably Georgia, South Carolina and Virginia. So what are the other two? West Virginia? Kentucky? Alabama?

I was going to complain about everyone misspelling Smoky Mountains, but then I spelled Clingman’s with a K.

    Alain,

Thanks for the good news from your family! Glad he is recovering well, while this is now an SOP procedure, not routine when it’s your heart!

JJJ, great pictures, so unusual to have that kind of viewing weather up that high. Thanks.

The last time we were up there, it was all fog and mist and bluster and COLD. Even tho it was June.

When I was a kid one of our few longer distance trips featured Clingmans Dome. Been back to the Smokies many times since. Always beautiful. Thanks for these great pictures!

    @Steve in the ATL:
    NC moonshine is the best.
    Good news on the FIL.
    @J R in WV:
Truer words! Having someone poking around in your heart is interesting and just plain scary. I got to watch the screens as they were doing my angiogram. At least I knew the results right away.

Thanks, glad I got up there, even though I’m afraid of heights. I just assumed that it was smoke coming down. I definitely had a lot of moonshine, though not from my own well. Also not when I was driving down the mountain, or I probably would have driven over the edge of the cliff. The trip was good, even with the multitude of maga and djt hats and even stores with those cardboard models of djt at the entrance; the area is super Republican. Next trip is either Chicago or Los Angeles, I think
