Is there anyone scummier than Bill Barr?
Q: Who shielded Trump from accountability the most during his ignominious tenure in the White House?
The popular answer is Mitch McConnell.
The correct answer is Bill Barr. https://t.co/6pUO37efb1

Nominations are open. (But please don’t nominate the dog lady. I need to leave that story behind.)

Barr and McConnell are brothers from another mother.
Both detest TIFG, and what he’s turned their beloved GQP into, but will vote for the R.
Hildebrand
How does Barr justify voting for someone who ‘shouldn’t be near the oval office’?
Unabogie
I mean the clear answer to “who is scummier?” is Trump. He embodies every venal sin known to humans. As to who covers for him, that’d be the SCOTUS who is actively preventing him from spending time in prison where he belongs. Second place is every other Republican on earth.
HumboldtBlue
The NYT is challenging Barr for shithead of the week, the thin-skinned twats.
Think about that last statement, something the Times refuses to do as they are desperate for clicks and having a horse race mentality and shaping your political coverage around that horse race, and people have caught on to the false equivalencies. They did it deliberately in 2016, 2020 and now.
Baud
@Hildebrand:
The alternative is a Democrat.
Baud
I’ll hand this to Barr. He doesn’t pretend there’s something other than a choice between Biden and Trump. No make believe about third parties or not voting as some kind of moral stand.
TeezySkeezy

Alito.
Alito is worse than Barr and he remains in a position, as this week’s oral argument reminded us, to continue to do serious damage to our Constitutional Republic.

Barr is to Trump as Molotov was to Stalin. A moral sewer , and likely subject to devastating kompromat (as Stalin had on Molotov).

Barr used to bully Jewish kids in high school because that’s who he is. Nothing surprises me about him. Of course he prefers Trump. Trump is more likely to bring on the Francoist paradise Barr dreams of.
kindness
Republicans like Bill Barr have a twisted view of honor and principle. In this case, Bill Barr will vote for Trump in principle because he calls himself a Republican. The fact that Trump belittled him again less than a couple days ago also means Bill Barr doesn’t think much about honor. Like his own.
Funny…I always thought honor and principles went hand in hand. Go figure, eh?

Gotta go with the obvious and say Trump. Many of these other assholes would still be on the ground side of rotting wood if Trump hadn’t come along to enable their emergence into the light of day. Trump, Barr, Alito, JD Vance, and Stephen Miller, in no particular order.
TeezySkeezy
@Baud: The right wing faithful cannot imagine anything but ultimate victory, though. We might see a decline, but wherever they are, no matter what has already happened, they draw a straight trend line to “win.” So he sees the choice of effective secular democracy vs chaotic trump term but religious nuts have his ear. A rational mind might think, the risks outweigh the rewards i should be careful not to discredit my movement. Nah, they think they are guaranteed to win, earthly concerns are secondary, let us go big or go to hell! The downsides are always minimized. But when the downside happens, they redraw the trend line from the new place toward “win” again, and feel confident it is coming.

Nominations of “who’s the scummiest” is not unlike the not-really-a-medieval discussion of how many angels can dance on the end of a pin.
I don’t mean to suggest the discussion is a waste of time, it’s more that the answer is ‘a veritable shitload so where do I even begin?’
I’d suggest any number of reigning plutocrats…and Larry Summers.
But all the above names have merit. So many potential low tumbrel numbers and so many deserving passengers.

It says something that, if it was the 1950s they seem so nostalgic for, pretty much none of the current “leading lights” of the GOP would be anything. Small time scum, all of them. Or, if you prefer, Senator McCarthy mere wannabes.
Frankensteinbeck
Absolutely fucking not. No. Sorry, Jack, you are miles and miles and miles off here. Barr lied and gave Trump cover in the media. McConnell sat with his finger on the button that could rein Trump in, in big ways and small, the whole presidency, and wouldn’t press it. The biggest things, the actually long-term things Trump accomplished, the tax cuts and judges, were all McConnell’s accomplishments. McConnell was the shield protecting Trump and the hand up Trump’s ass using him as a puppet, always. There is no one who has done more damage than the Gravedigger of American Democracy.

Sometimes we fall into the trap of seeing things only from a narrow perspective, like assuming right off the bat that we’re only talking about Americans. But what about Putin and Assad and MBS and Kim Jong Un? And then there are all the thugocracies and non-state actors where I would be hard put to say who’s in charge, but are adding to the world’s misery.

Also McConnell leaves Barr in the dust for general scum. McConnell tried to send America into a Great Depression to punish us for electing a black man president. McConnell was so thirsty to eliminate Medicaid that he failed to sink Obamacare by one vote, despite that being what his caucus really really really wanted to do. Roe vs Wade was overturned because of McConnell’s hand-picked judges. Trump got a list to pick from, all of whom were sworn to that purpose before Trump went eenie-meenie-minie-moe. McConnell laughed when asked about Covid deaths. McConnell called the appointment of Barrett a birthday present for Hillary Clinton. Just because he plays genteel old man well for the news doesn’t mean he isn’t the meanest, pettiest, most reactionary and murderous slime in Washington.

Another Scott
@Frankensteinbeck: Barr and McConnell both were and are horrible. But, agreed, McConnell was worse.
Barr, for campaigning on for the job with his long letter saying things that TIFG wanted to hear and, once getting the job, holding up Mueller’s report and releasing that whitewashed summary that poisoned all reporting about it, rushing to execute federal death row inmates before he was pushed out the door, quitting on December 23 when he knew (or should have known) what was coming on January 6, etc.
McConnell for breaking the Senate and for keeping millions in dire straits throughout the recovery from the housing bubble bursting, refusing to have a united front against VVP’s interference in the 2016 election, stealing SCOTUS seats, and all the rest.
Barr is and was horrible. McConnell was horrible and also was hugely damaging to the country and the Senate.
Grr…,

We aren’t the only ones. Luttig weighs in.

WaterGirl
@Quinerly: I’m sure that what’s in the documentary is horrifying – even if we know most of it already, seeing it all gathered in one place makes it even more powerful, for good or for bad.
I am taking comfort that it’s in the mainstream, and if it’s on prime, I call that mainstream.
Seems like last time around we were all waiting for the documentary about Jim Jordan and the abuse of wrestlers, that was always just a few months out. It was like infrastructure week!
So I’m taking comfort in the fact that this is out there, and we don’t have to be here bitching because some entity decided that it was too political to show.
Baud
@Quinerly:
That quote makes no sense though. The two alternatives aren’t related to each other. Whether or not Trump gets immunity will be decided this summer. Whether or not Trump is elected will be decided in November.
The only thing I think there is consensus on is that the Supreme Court acted to delay Trump’s trial.
WaterGirl
@Quinerly: I admire Luttig for standing up for the rule of law. And he, more than anyone else, worked in advance to make it clear that the Supreme Court should be basing rulings on the rule of law, regardless of broke the law.
When I get discouraged, that is what I feel like. Thankfully, these past few weeks there was fundraising to focus on, which pulled me out of my discouragement.

Back to the question posed…the scummiest. This is an interesting read re Alito.
With a gossipy tidbit (I am not implying anything. This just jumped out at me)….
“When George W. Bush named him to the court in 2005, experts told us—of course—that Alito was conservative, yes, but not an extremist (interestingly, Maryanne Trump Barry, Donald’s sister under whom Alito had worked as a prosecutor, was among those recommending Alito’s nomination).”
I guess we all remember Trump Barry was a Dem appointed to the Fed bench by Pres. Clinton.

@Baud: Luttig is a Reaganite Republican. That accursed sector is rightly having all the feels as their party goes full fascist. Unlike us, Luttig can’t realistically aspire to crush his political enemy and create a more just and equatable society. No wonder he’s sad!

I wonder how I would feel if I had to make a similar transition though. It’s an interesting question to ponder.

Yeah, I don’t think that’s helpful from public figures, either – discouragement is so contagious
edit: on the other hand, they are human, and Luttig is on the losing side of this. That’s what he gets for choosing the rule of law!!!
Geminid
@Betty Cracker: Speaking of Reagan Republicans, I got around to reading the Politico Magazine article on Susie Wiles. It was long, with a lot of attention given to her family and childhood.
Wiles was involved with the first Reagan campaign, worked for him most of the next 8 years and in his retirement. Then she got involved in Jacksonville politics.
The DeSantis stuff was good, but probably the most important material was about Wiles’ powerful place in the Trump world.
