RAVEN
YESSSSS!
trollhattan
Fantastic start–keep up the pressure!
Walker
Why would you insult biscuits by associating them with an inferior bread?
rikyrah
GO USA :)
guachi
Possession is about equal but the US is bringing more pressure and getting more and better shots.
trollhattan
Love our pace. We look looser that against Spain.
trollhattan
Mandy hits a screamer just high. She can make that shot.
David ??Merry Christmas?? Koch
Julie Ertz with two big saves.
Baud
G⚽ USA!
guachi
France has been great the last ten minutes. No goals but better opportunities. US has its first foul.
HumboldtBlue
Lot of action great match so far and France have to chase which means it will remain open.
Martin
It’s a shame this isn’t the final. Both of these teams deserve to make it there.
RAVEN
OK experts, what are they saying with all the yapping and gesturing to the ref?
HumboldtBlue
@Martin:
Just learned that if France lose it’s a double-elimination because they won’t be one of the top three European teams in the WC meaning they won’t earn a spot in the Olympics.
trollhattan
Heh
They’re playing to the cameras. Lucky us until half 2.
RAVEN
@HumboldtBlue: It took me a second for that to register since that’s not normally what double-elimination means. I got it eventually.
trollhattan
@RAVEN:
Usually it’s non-calls–fouls, offsides, etc. In the Spain match they could have called fifteen fouls made to Morgan alone.
guachi
That US goal sure seems like a long ago.
HumboldtBlue
@RAVEN:
You should have gestured exasperatingly to the ref!
RAVEN
@trollhattan: It looked like the French player were saying she wasn’t really hurt.
Martin
@HumboldtBlue: Oh, that’s bullshit. This team is great.
RAVEN
@HumboldtBlue: The old ba-fun-gul!
RAVEN
I’ve set picks like that!
HumboldtBlue
@Martin:
They are wonderful to watch but have a reputation if falling down in the biggest moments.
lee
The last few minutes in a half always seem to be the most dangerous….
HumboldtBlue
It’s 114F in Paris, WTF?
yellowdog
@HumboldtBlue: At 9:45 pm?!!!
HumboldtBlue
From the Guardian live feed:
France have 61% possession, five shots — not one on target.
SRW1
@RAVEN:
The ref should have to carry a live mic for these ‘conversations’!
PS: I am joking. I suspect quite a few of these ‘conversations’ would be a bit embarrassing when the ‘heat of the battle’ has subsided.
RAVEN
@SRW1: I always wonder what language they speak.
HumboldtBlue
@yellowdog:
No, that was the record broken today, they are at about 90 degrees with 50% humiditiy
SRW1
@HumboldtBlue:
France has today recorded it’s hottest day in June ever.
guachi
Exciting first half. Americans came alive in the last few minutes and got some good shots on goal.
Still 1-0.
SRW1
@RAVEN:
I suspect it’s all sort of heavily accented ‘English’. On both sides of the conversation.
HumboldtBlue
@trollhattan:
Someone at the Guardian is reading your comments:
HumboldtBlue
@SRW1:
I saw that, absurd.
mrmoshpotato
Soooo…second goal 5 minutes into the second half? Or are they going to relax a bit?
David ??Merry Christmas?? Koch
Roll tide, roll
HumboldtBlue
@mrmoshpotato:
Well, considering France had 60% possession is the US relaxes any more tey will be in recliners on the sideline. US midfield got overrun and played very sloppily, one mistake and France can score.
SRW1
No let up at the beginning of the second half.
Fantastic game. I wonder how long that intensity can be kept up, though.
HumboldtBlue
France need some pep!
trollhattan
@SRW1:
Some of the games with the highest quality audio I’ve been able to hear refs, coaches and players isolated on one of the surround channels. Sometimes it’s in English. :-)
trollhattan
Corners are where you really can’t ignore France has the tournament’s tallest player.
trollhattan
How did they not score just then?
trollhattan
France must be doing a good job on Heath and Lavelle, they’re not having much impact, especially Tobin.
mrmoshpotato
@trollhattan:
I’ll take “The ball didn’t go in the goal for $500, Alex.” :)
mrmoshpotato
@trollhattan: That one went in the goal, however!
trollhattan
@mrmoshpotato:
At the very least it was an impressive mess!
trollhattan
Yeah PINO!
ThresherK
Can I get Donald Trump to talk shit about every athlete I want to win?
guachi
US going full turtle mode.
It’s like the prevent defense in football that only prevents you from winning.
SRW1
Looks like Trump’s ‘pep talk’ had a motivating effect on Megan Rapinoe.
raven
@trollhattan: Goddamn DVR, I was just a little bit behind!
guachi
And, of course, I post that and the US scores.
HumboldtBlue
That’ll do it
HumboldtBlue
@guachi: You’re correct, though, Ellis has them in a 5-4-1 and that’s all defense.
mrmoshpotato
@guachi: Keep talking trash. It’s working. :)
Steeplejack
@HumboldtBlue:
The 114°F (45.9°C) temp was recorded in the south of France. The high in Paris on Friday was 90°F. It’s down to about 82° now.
trollhattan
@SRW1:
Keeps this up she’s a golden boot candidate.
Horan instantly changed our vulnerability in the center. Love her game.
trollhattan
@raven:
Whoopise. ;-)
Will rewatch at a decent size tonight. Squinting at my phone, they’re so tiny!
Raven
@trollhattan: Nah, I need to pay better attention!
SRW1
Almost certainly curtains for France now. Shame this game had to take place in the quarterfinal.
Shit. Too early, the 3 – 0 goal doesn’t count.
trollhattan
VAR may just reverse this. If it does, French toast.
HumboldtBlue
@Steeplejack:
Yeah, I actually read more than the headline on a second take and realized the high mark was from the south.
Raven
@SRW1: So now I’m way ahead.
mrmoshpotato
@SRW1: Why didn’t the 3-0 goal count?
Shit! 2-1
SRW1
Renard really is a tower.
And the chase is on.
ThresherK
Nice free kick and France are duly rewarded.
trollhattan
That’s what 6’2″ gets you.
David ??Merry Christmas?? Koch
Ruh-roh
SRW1
@mrmoshpotato:
Offside.
(Attacking player closer to the goal than the last defender at the moment the ball was passed to her.)
HumboldtBlue
The USA passing has been very sloppy, France is going to rue (see what I did there?) not having taken advantage.
Baud
I look away for one minute…. C’mon, USA.
trollhattan
@Baud:
We knew it would be a nail-biter. Anybody have a spare nail?
mrmoshpotato
@Baud:
France’s goal is your fault?
Raven
What the fuck, they can just push you out of bounds and they get the rock???>
SRW1
If France were Germany (male team), this game almost certainly would go to extra time. Because last minute goal.
trollhattan
Don’t you go tripping Baby Horse!
ThresherK
@Raven: I was wondering about that myself (US deep in the right corner).
Baud
Are extra times longer this year than they used to be?
Betty Cracker
I don’t understand how any of this works, but it’s tense all the same! Damn!
ThresherK
Hey the ref’s assistant finally awarded a free kick for all that pushing down!
Raven
Sounds like when Georgia fans took over Notre Dame!!!!
SRW1
Whoof. You did the game proud, ladies (of both teams)!
trollhattan
Whew!
Bring on England. (Tuesday, noon PT)
Not the prettiest soccer but everybody played guts-out.
HumboldtBlue
This pretty much sums it up
Bring on Perfidious Albion!
Baud
Alrighty then. That’s a wrap.
SRW1
@Betty Cracker:
As one dude ones said: The round one must go into the rectangular one.
Betty Cracker
@SRW1: LOL!
Raven
@HumboldtBlue: They don’t ask how, they ask HOW MANY!!!
Sloane Ranger
Congratulations to USA. See you in the semi’s.
Omnes Omnibus
Well done, ladies.
trollhattan
@Sloane Ranger:
Looking forward to it. Your gals were lights-out yesterday. Bronze’s goal off the tricky set play was the best I’ve seen.
Betty Cracker
mrmoshpotato
@Betty Cracker: LOL! That’s great.
billcinsd
The US plan was to let the French have the ball because France prefer to counterattack. The French left side players, Majri and Le Sommer, were terrible offensively. Crystal Dunn played very well. Mewis stepped back too quickly on the French goal keeping the French attackers onside
Amir Khalid
@SRW1:
This is actually under consideration, from what I know. It was tried a few months ago at a (men’s) professional match in Australia and was well-received.
