Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I have other things to bitch about but those will have to wait.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

“In the future, this lab will be a museum. do not touch it.”

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it is not glory.

Bark louder, little dog.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Trumpflation is an intolerable hardship for every American, and it’s Trump’s fault.

Petty moves from a petty man.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

“Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on.”

Boeing: repeatedly making the case for high speed rail.

No one could have predicted…

They were going to turn on one another at some point. It was inevitable.

You know it’s bad when the Project 2025 people have to create training videos on “How To Be Normal”.

Relentless negativity is not a sign that you are more realistic.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

Quote tweet friends, screenshot enemies.

People are complicated. Love is not.

The press swings at every pitch, we don’t have to.

My right to basic bodily autonomy is not on the table. that’s the new deal.

If you thought you’d already seen people saying the stupidest things possible on the internet, prepare yourselves.

I really like Jaime Harrison. I think I’ve posted a few of his campaign videos before. This one is spot on.

This campaign is about bringing hope back to folks like this man. I'm ready to fight for him and working people across South Carolina, are you with me??? pic.twitter.com/x5c6w8aJ02

Hell of a good campaign ad.

Sure, a lot of it is platitudes and “can’t we all get along.” But the message will resonate.

(Doesn’t hurt that I can read all of it, without the volume on.)

Jeez, great ad. I want to vote for him!

Kiddo’s XC team have a “subsection” meet today, qualifying for section and hopefully, state championship. Girl’s varsity did great, #2 among Div 1 schools and my little runner set the school record for that course. She was no threat to the first girl, who finished a whopping 42 seconds ahead. Probably stopped to touch up her nails.

Love that ad. I will be donating soon to Jaime Harrison and to Amy McGrath, and I have no reason to ever go within 500 miles of Kentucky or South Carolina. Time for ‘murka to flush Moscow Mitch and Leningrad Lindsey.

It’s friggin South Carolina. The same folks that put Mark Sanford back in elected office after hiking the Appalachian Trail. Forget about it.

@PsiFighter37: It’s a long shot, but I make a monthly donation, because for years I heard that there was nothing to be done about gun control because the NRA is so strong. Everything changes if enough people want it to. Plus, Lindsey Graham is shit.

We can’t forget any state. We need to contest everywhere as hard as we can. It’s not like that state is going to be a massive drain on resources. They can get people excited, which is more important than money.

Even though he’s running in deep red territory, Graham has so irrevocably attached himself to Trump that he may go down with the sinking ship. Besides, we need to make the GOP work for it.
David Axelrod thinks this ad is genius.

@Mary G: Fritz Hollings was the last guy to win a statewide election in South Carolina, and that was before the turn of the millennium. Yes, Sweet Lindsey is a despicable bootlicker, now that he’s decided that Trump’s footwear tastes better than John McCain’s, but the state ain’t turning anytime soon. I would rather focus on the winnable races – Maine, Iowa, Arizona, North Carolina and Colorado – over a long shot like SC. If you’re going to donate to long shots / lost causes (depending on how cynical you are), go for the head and donate to McGrath.

@Richard Guhl: Yes, it’s a good ad. It also won’t change the fact that the dude has an ice cream cone’s chance in hell of not melting / losing the election.

There have been some long shots over the 15+ years I have been playing really close attention to politics that are worth investing in – this ain’t one of them. You get lucky on the congressional district side. On the Senate side – you need someone like Roy Moore to have a prayer of winning in the Deep South. That part of the country is lost once you get outside the cities.

  15. 15.

    Another Scott

    November 9, 2019 at 3:56 pm

It’s a very good ad. There are several other declared candidates, and more who may enter:

    Declared

Gloria Bromell Tinubu, former Georgia state representative, candidate for Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina in 2018, and nominee for South Carolina’s 7th congressional district in 2012 and 2014[15]

Jaime Harrison, former chair of the South Carolina Democratic Party and associate chairman of the Democratic National Committee[16]

    Matthew Knights[17]

    William Stone, legal researcher[18]

    Justin Wooton, activist[19]

    Potential

Stephen K. Benjamin, Mayor of Columbia[20]

Mal Hyman, former candidate for South Carolina’s 7th congressional district in 2016 and 2018[21]

Harrison has lots of high-powered endorsements, but only one listed as being from South Carolina. (Tinubu doesn’t have any listed there.)

The primary is February 29, 2020.

    Cheers,
    Scott.

Taxes are needed to pave the roads, fix the schools, fund the hospitals. The GOP wins in SC by telling folks taxes are bad & it is those other people stealing your money – never going to get anything done when you think taxes are bad – and the US political media enforces this thought every day of every week of every year.

Today’s mail brought my first Shutterfly album of vacation photos from our recent 15-day cruise of the British isles. Chose a 12″ by 12″ page format with 20 pages, each containing between 2 and 6 pictures. Softcover. Quality was excellent and turnaround time was under ten days. Price including sales tax and shipping was $50. Highly recommended.

I see the “we’ll never win there, so why bother trying” crowd has arrived. You’re just this side of “why bother voting, they all suck.” Same sentiment, different verse. Luckily, there are people like Harrison who could give a crap about your defeatism. But go on, tell us more how your ideas and efforts will help take back the country.

Folks, aren’t we forgetting the real monsters here?
    Fucking republicans.
No race is lost until it’s lost. No state is uniformly bad. Or good.
We want to crush the republican party in a year.
Crush them like an aluminum can under a steamroller. Flatter than a dime.
That is an all hands job, not a few hands job.
The least question – Is this person worth supporting?
The next – Is this person the best running for the job?
The last – Can I afford to give this money? Being right doesn’t beat hunger.
We are battling money, people who want us to vote for that, for allowing them to get even wealthier and us to have less.
We are down to about as low as it gets without civil war.
We need to win this and win it big.
Stick any prejudice someplace the sun doesn’t shine and help what you can.
And listen to your friends no matter how tenuous, we are all in this together.

@Mike in NC: Agreed on the quality. I was able to print a “free” album of my wedding pictures a year or so ago (*just had to pay shipping). I was particular enough about how I wanted things arranged (and I wanted to include a copy of our wedding vows), that I selected what pictures I wanted where. But, yeah, it turned out really well. Tentatively planning to do a similar thing for the grandparents for our daughter’s first birthday next August, probably.

I’ve seen some decent deals in their emails – including one “free” photobook, I think. If you get their emails, you can keep an eye out for some good sales. Good quality stuff, too.

@Martin: Their other senator is African American ( but Republican.) This might be possible.

I lived on a dirt road in CA, where it hardly ever rains. It sucked.

When I was a little kid in central Florida, the only part of town in town with dirt roads was “colored town”. Two blocks from city hall, but they had no pavement. Also no street lights.

    This is a big deal.

My family lives in a small town in Arkansas. There was an election a few years ago for “county road paver” (can’t remember the exact title) who was up for re-election. My uncle said they were trying to get him re-elected. Someone asked him why, since the guy had spent nearly the entire budget paving the county road that went past his house?! He said that’s the reason we should re-elect him. His road is paved.

@PsiFighter37: Graham won by 15 points in 2014, but he outspent Brad Hutto by a 30:1 rate. Wonder what the results might be if, say, that slapdick Steyer dumped a few ducats into the mix there, instead of wasting everyone’s time with his tilt at the big windmill?
