Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

This really is a full service blog.

Bad news for Ron DeSantis is great news for America.

Let there be snark.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Innocent people don’t delay justice.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

He really is that stupid.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

There is no doubt in my mind the Republicans will vote against impeaching Trump, but our job is to hang this shit around their necks like an anchor and never let them forget what they have done.

I see Devin Nunes has betrayed the President.
(I suppose I should be careful with such jokes, lest some Trump supporter lone madman shoot Mr. Nunes.)

EDIT: I wonder if Speaker Pelosi will use this to say “Sorry, Senator McConnell, we thought we were done but as you can see more evidence just keeps turning up.  Give us another two weeks, and – assuming he doesn’t commit any new felonies – we might be able to send the articles over to you.”

    Wow, wow, wow.

I really hope this is part of a deliberate strategy by the Dems.  (I don’t think that can be the case since there was a judge that had to rule on releasing these, if I recall correctly.)  But in any event the timing couldn’t be better.  This is going to unspool over the next 6-10 days would be my guess.  Mainstream media is going to nibble on it tomorrow and then dive in Sat. and Sun..  With, in theory, the trial getting ready to start in a week or 2.  Just fantastic.

Oh, and bye, bye Jay Suckandblow – you’re a witness so you won’t be trying this case.  So sorry!

I had to google Robert Hyde to see why he would be texting Parnas.  From this article, he is quite the classic Republican.  Donated more to Trump’s campaign than he owes in child support.  Escorted by police from Trump Doral in Miami for a disturbance, claiming we was being watched by the Secret Service.  Posted an obscene tweet about Kamala Harris and of course, he is running for Congress.  Quite a piece …. of something.

@planetjanet: in other words, he’s a republican. I look forward to the coverage of an impeached president who’s perfect call, no pressure, transcripts, is revealed to have conspired to assassinate a US Ambassador on foreign soil. I hope that the Speaker of the House and the Committees that are still investigating continue to keep the crimes front and center and that his accomodationists have to start defending murder as a political strategy.

    Reuters:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives said on Tuesday they would include new evidence when they send formal impeachment charges against President Donald Trump to the Senate on Wednesday, seeking to expand the scope of a trial that will dominate Washington for the next several weeks.

Senior Democrats said they would include phone records and other documents provided by Florida businessman Lev Parnas when they make their case that Trump abused his power by pressuring Ukraine to investigate a political rival, former Vice President Joe Biden.

Kristol and Frum have both been anti-Trump from the moment he declared his candidacy, so it should be unsurprising they’re making a big deal out of this.  The question is whether it will make anyone who was previously favorable toward Trump change their mind.

Trump (according to the “memorandum”) “Well, she’s going to go through some things.”
So it could be that they were just talking about having her roughed up, maybe legs broken or whatever sub-lethal things one does in that part of the world.
ETA and to be clear, there are more benign interpretations, but I’m not feeling charitable towards Trump in my interpretations today. He showed some ghoulish glee in the (startlingly impaired) teleprompter reading after the recent overt political assassination of Soleimani.

@MisterForkbeard: Well as far as fishing for a pardon, you would think that the lacks of pardons for people like Rodger Stone or Paul Manafort might make other cultists pause a bit.

Also, I don’t think you can rescind a guilty plea, I remember where a ’00 Islamist crazy person pleaded guilty a year or two after 9/11 hoping to be martyred, and tried to rescind his guilty plea after the verdict of life in supermax. IANAL though

EDIT:  Tricks like that at the end of a trial tend to make the judges angry and into a “Throw ALL the books at him mood”.  Much better to try things like that on the appeal, but Trumkins don’t really hire the smartest lawyers.

@Bill Arnold:  “Some revenge by Lev Parnas for being dissed by Donald J. Trump.
That was a stupid move, DJT. :-)”

I know! And I think the media really misses the mark when they keep calling Parnas a Giuliani associate. Seems to me that instead he’s a TRUMP associate. We’ve only seen the pix with Giuliani going back about a year, but the pix with Trump go back for years and years. I don’t think he had much to do with Giuliani until Trump put them together onto Team Ukraine. Parnas was really chuffed about the assignment and felt very important, so when Trump said he didn’t know him – WELL!

And you know what? I think the Senate GOP is inching close to their Goldwater moment, the moment when they go to Trump and tell him ‘you’ve got to resign because if we hold this trial, you’re out anyway’. Not because I sense any honor in them, but that they’re worried for their own hides.

Remember what Parnas is charged with – laundering foreign money into Republican campaigns! And what does the House do? They release this absolutely bombshell stuff from the Parnas cellphones and made sure we all know ‘and that’s not all of it.’ So they have to wonder if their campaign coffers received any of that foreign money. And I wouldn’t be surprised if there were a few of them who have pictures of them out there with Parnas. They’re going to have to be thinking that they need to get Trump out of office for their own survival and the survival of the party.
