Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

Spilling the end game before they can coat it in frankl luntz-approved dogwhistles.

I didn’t have alien invasion on my 2023 BINGO card.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

They think we are photo bombing their nice little lives.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

… among the most cringeworthy communications in the history of the alphabet!

When do the post office & the dmv weigh in on the wuhan virus?

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

I really should read my own blog.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

Because we have standards here, Mr. Cole!

Amazing fact: apparently the DNC convention was helmed from (Emmy winner) Glenn Weiss's living room in Brentwood. He had pants on but no shoes. pic.twitter.com/urM6y1Zxk3

Joe Biden, like Obama last night, is doing something we haven’t seen in a long time: A leader is speaking to Americans like they are adults, capable of hearing bad news, and able to rise to challenges, instead of children who need entertainment and fairytales.

— Tom Nichols (@RadioFreeTom) August 21, 2020

*Snf* No short-lived ‘foreign affairs’…

As foreign ambassadors to the US sat at home watching the DNC from their couches, they were upset about what they missed: a prime opportunity to schmooze w/ the officials who could be part of an incoming admin if Biden beats Trump in the November election. https://t.co/9CcAR0NKjX

— Kylie Atwood (@kylieatwood) August 21, 2020

… Traditionally, diplomats swarm the Republican and Democratic conventions — filling their schedules with cocktail parties and breakfast meetings with party insiders, seeking to gather any information they can about who is who and the policies they favor.

They’re looking to meet America’s current power brokers and future leaders, all with a view to developing helpful relationships and getting a better understanding of how an American election might affect the political relationship and economic and strategic ties with their country — all of which gets written up and sent back to foreign capitals around the world.

“You can’t replace the personal interactions,” said one ambassador. “It is just not the same thing.”…

.

Of course, some people didn’t care for it…

Trump went to Scranton today to try to draw a sharp contrast between his speaking ability and Biden's and, well, mission accomplished.

Funny seeing non-religious progressives get upset over the (brief) religious focus earlier while consistently talking about how the working class across the nation must unify. Rural WWC in Appalachia and working-class Black folks in the South are probably most unified by faith.

@David ? ☘The Establishment☘? Koch:  Corbin Trent and Saikat Chakrabarti were instrumental in putting AOC in Congress, when their Justice Democrats recruited her and with the help of NYC Democratic Democratic Socialists surprised Joe Crowley in the NY 14th primary. So far so good. But then, they flew her and the junior senator from Vermont to Kansas to campaign for two Bernie bro congressional candidates. One candidate almost knocked out Sharice Davids, a very strong candidate who went on to flip her district. Saikat and Corbin would have done better to drop AOC off in Chicago, where Marie Neuman would come up just short in her her challenge to Ted Lipinski. But Neuman was not a Bernie bro.           AOC has grown as a congresswoman, but mostly after she cut Trent and Chakrabarti loose last August. Chakrabarti is laying low, but I see Trent is still his pugnacious, pissy self.

Some anecdotal evidence of the effect of Biden’s acceptance speech: I’ve worked for an upper middle class couple over the last 15 years-landscape construction, planting, maintenance etc. I’ve gotten to be friends with Jane and we talk politics some. They are what used to be called “Volvo Republicans,” socially liberal, fiscally conservative. I guess you could call them Range Rover Republicans now (and she in fact does drive a Range Rover). Anyway, Jane had bought into the bullshit about Biden being in mental decline, but she watched his speech and came away with a much more open mind about his capabilities.            This couple voted for trump, but I believe Jane when she says they voted for Obama in 2008. They are friends with two other couples I’ve worked for. I’m pretty sure the group split 3-3 in 2016, but I’m guessing they will go 5-1 if not 6-6 for Biden this year.                   This particular demographic cohort is not that numerous, and I believe Rachel Bitecofer’s thesis that bringing out the large registered-but don’t vote crowd has greater effect than “conversion stategies” i.e. flipping republicans. But the vote of someone who comes off the fence in November and votes for Biden counts as much as the vote of someone who hates trump with the heat of five thousand suns, and I want every vote we can get. A landslide would put the Democrats in a stronger position for their legislative campaign in next year’s Congress.

From the reports, Glenn Weiss and the DNC were working together for months to prepare and produce the convention, including installing that control center in his living room.  Let’s see, two months ago… I’m fairly sure Trump was still confident they’d be having it in-person in Florida. So the RNC may be a little behind in prep work.

I gotta stop listening to NPR interviewing “Democrats” about their feelings toward the Dem candidate. In 2016, it was that moron who said “Give me a reason to vote for Clinton, but without using the words ‘Donald Trump’ or ‘Supreme Court.’ ” Yesterday, it was two out of three expressing their displeasure: with Biden not being lefty enough, with the Convention not having enough young people speak, with Biden not being lefty enough, with Dems speaking more about unity than about how they’re going to provide a rainbow-shitting unicorn in every pot, with Biden (presumably, as in, what they presume will happen) not having any lefty persons as his advisers.

To be fair: one of the persons sounded rational, and was all-in for Biden (OK, maybe some confirmation bias on my part).

But the other two made me want to emulate the end of the car chase in Bullitt.

@SFAW: Yeah, those lefties also get me reaching for my pitchfork. But I will credit the Justice Democrats for leading me to this forum. I was researching the JDs when I came across a post by some guy named Adam Silverman, in the oddly named Balloon Juice.

    @Geminid:

I was researching the JDs when I came across a post by some guy named Adam Silverman, in the oddly named Balloon Juice.

I’ve heard of that joint; buncha jackals spewing vitriol.

But inquiring “minds” want to know: why would you ever want to research the Justice Dems? Other than as penance?

@SFAW: When I saw all the hoopla attending AOC’s win over Crowley I wanted to find out more about the group that sponsored her. I’m probably in the “moderate” wing of the Democratic Party, but I keep a weather eye on the left.  Just like I keep track of the republicans, especially in my own state of Virginia.

@mrmoshpotato: Each state with a Trump-owned property will feature that location during the roll call.
