NYTimes, abandoning the sunk cost of Trump-fluffing:
President Trump sought to dispel any perception of weakness on Sunday with a surprise and seemingly risky outing from his hospital bed to greet supporters even as his doctors once again rewrote the official narrative of his illness by acknowledging two alarming episodes they had previously not disclosed.
The doctors said that Mr. Trump’s blood oxygen level dropped twice in the two days after he was diagnosed with the coronavirus, requiring medical intervention, and that he had been put on steroids, suggesting his condition might be more serious than initially described. But they insisted that his situation had improved enough since then that he could be released from the hospital as early as Monday.
The acknowledgment of the episodes raised new questions about the credibility of the information provided about the commander in chief of a superpower as he is hospitalized with a disease that has killed more than 209,000 people in the United States. With the president determined not to concede weakness and facing an election in just 30 days, officials acknowledged providing rosy assessments to satisfy their prickly patient…
Mr. Trump, who historically hates hospitals and anything related to illness, has been hankering to get released, according to two people close to him, and some aides expressed fear that he would pressure Dr. Conley into releasing him by claiming to feel better than he actually does. But advisers were also troubled by the doctors’ prediction that they might release him on Monday because if they do not, it would signal that the president is not doing as well as indicated. They also worried that a premature return could lead to a second trip to the hospital if his condition worsens…

I guess the only way to make him stop is for the cabinet to declare him incompetent so that he can no longer give insane orders.
Because that’s what that was yesterday — an insane man spreading a bioweapon to his own security team. If that isn’t crazy then I don’t know what is! And the Republicans are afraid to do something about it… which makes them pretty crazy too, as well as stupid!

A couple of weeks ago, Watergirl made a post about everyone’s favorite 5 movies, based on how many times one had watched it and would one watch it again. It’s taken me this long but here’s the list.
1. Gettysburg
2. Lonesome Dove
3. Avatar
4. Saving Private Ryan
5. Return of the King (directors cut)
Series:
1. SG1
2. Battlestar Galactica (redo)
3. Band of Brothers
4. Star Wars (9 movies)
5. Travelers
You’re welcome. I enjoyed reading everyone else’s selections a lot.

Like I’ve been saying…we don’t need to worry about whether Trump will leave if he loses because I guarantee you his Secret Service detail is so sick of the guy (possibly that is a literal statement as sad as that is) that they will man haul him to the gates of the White House grounds and throw him outside the gate if he won’t leave. That’s if he survives until then of course.

CA ballots supposed to be mailed, well today, Monday. Mine arrived on Sat. I am voting this week and walking it over to the drop box my next day off. Which day depends on the work load. Last week I worked 1 3/4 days. I’ll get a call later today if any new jobs come in. Might work my normal 3 days, might not work at all. This year my take home pay has been, well better than some, but not near what I was hoping so I could retire next year. I’ve been, like many, many others, completely screwed by every republican president this century. And those assholes still get votes. There must be some pretty racist fuckers in this country.

Archie Shepp interviewed by his son Accra Shepp in The New York Review

I have a close friend who, like Kevin Drum, is being treated with dexamethasone (among other drugs) for multiple myeloma. He is a physician and an acute observer of his own mental state. He and his doctors have tried to reduce his dex several times, but that always leads to higher diagnostic markers. So he has years of experience with larger and smaller doses. He has described emerging from periods that seem to him to be the equivalent of senile dementia. There was a time when I thought some reporters and commentators were overstating the national security implications of Trump’s illness. He’s a nightmare, of course, but how much worse than usual? Now I realize it’s a lot worse if Trump is starting on a drug regimen that can make even sane and brilliant people like my friend incompetent.
What Have the Romans Ever Done for Us?
@Winston: I’m not saying these are my top 5, that would require more thought than I’m willing to put in this early in the morning but:
I’d like to list Forgetting Sarah Marshall here because I HAVE watched that a bunch of times. Also, I could have listed From Russia with Love instead of Goldfinger. Or Thunderball.
I excluded Christmas movies, because there are some that I watch every year out of tradition rather than because they’re super-good movies. That’s the reason Trains, Planes and Automobiles isn’t on this list, though yeah I know it’s technically a Thanksgiving rather than Christmas movie.
As for series:
I went years without Netflix because our account was on my wife’s credit card, that card expired, and she never got around to fixing the issue. Then when we cut the cable cord, which saved us $120 a month, I signed us up under the justification that we were saving a bunch of money, but that’s why the made for internet series I listed are mostly Amazon rather than Netflix series.
I loved Lonesome Dove, the book but have not seen the movie. I should re-read that – it’s been almost 20 years. One fun western I have watched numerous times is Silverado. It’s got an absolutely all star cast: Scott Glen, Kevin Costner, Kevin Klein, Danny Glover, Jeff Goldblum, Brian Dennehy…John Cleese has a cameo – the list goes on. Just a fun romp of a western.
As for TV…any show Michael Schur is affiliated with turns my crank – The Office, Parks and Recreation, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Good Place. Also love Schitt’s Creek. I’m watching lots of comedy to counteract the darkness of the times.
I just discovered that free on Youtube one can watch old episodes of Newhart (the one where he’s a Vermont Innkeeper). The first couple seasons it hadn’t hit it’s stride yet but starting in Season 3, the humor holds up pretty well.
Also Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry’s adaptation of P.G. Woodhouses Jeeves and Wooster series are free on Youtube and worth a watch.

@What Have the Romans Ever Done for Us?: The expanse is great, destined to be on my list, but I limited my selections to the shows that are finished. There is at least on season to come. I also liked Dark Matter, Jupiter Ascending, The Matrix movies, and so many others. It’s really hard to drill down to 5 favorites. There are three Lonesome Dove movies; Return to Lonesome Dove, and Streets of Laredo being the other two, all of which I have watched several times. Streets of Laredo is a tossup with the original. Thanks for you list. I have a lot of time to watch movies and am always looking for recs. ?

Actually Streets of Laredo is probably the best western ever made. But it’s a three part series, so doesn’t really qualify as a movie. James Garner, Sissy Spacek, Sam Shepard. If you haven’t seen it, you’re missing out, but you should watch Lonesome Dove and Return to Lonesome Dove first. S of L is available on Amazon for 3.99. Guess what I’m watching the rest of today?

The election is over for team Trump. The panic set in and started last week. We aren’t looking at someone trying to save his seat in the oval office anymore. We are looking at someone terrified there will be a political coup in his absence from the WH over the next 48 hours. The October surprise may end up being competing GOP factions trying to take control of the government. The death throes of the Trump administration have begun. Questions for the country and media should now be, who are the factions trying to take control? Who is in control of the VP right now and who is likely to be whispering in his ears. If Dump doesn’t walk out of WR in the couple of days, the back room machines will make sure the press starts howling for Congress to invoke 25. I think it could happen as soon as this afternoon now just because Trump panicked and made the doctors paint a rosy picture of a full and speedy recovery.
Will Barr try to convince the newly sworn in Dence to declare martial law and suspend the elections?
What is McConnell’s play? Will he try to install his man in the vacated VP slot? who will that be?
Never underestimate the Bush Crime Family. What are they planning? A take over of the RNC? The national party is leaderless too.
Who is whispering to the Joint Chiefs and National Security Secretary? Outside of 25th the Nat Sec has authority on national security issues.
We didn’t have a functioning government before Friday and have no elected official running the WH now. Why isn’t the press screaming this from the rooftops? The Parade of the Damned was a temporary distraction but it isn’t going to last long. Isn’t this the real calamity we were fearing for the last 4 years? Normalcy has been lost down a memory hole and no one knows what they should be doing in a crisis – the Executive Office is leaderless and no one knows who is in charge. Now imagine if Barr wins control of the reigns of power? Now does it make sense that he isn’t quarantining?
